(example: Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X [ https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X] ). Thanks for the suggestion though. I've now been trying out the various Apple specific flags in vfs_fruit ( https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/current/man-html/vfs_fruit.8.html), though with no success thus far. Example settings tried in smb.conf: [global]

vfs objects
Is the ?important" vfs objects parameter documented in a man page anywhere? It appears in the man pages of several vfs modules, but never fully documented that I could find. Apparently it once was from a now dead link https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/old/Samba3-HOWTO/smb.conf.5.html#VFSOBJECTS <https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/old/Samba3-HOWTO/smb.conf.5.html#VFSOBJECTS> . OS X client symlinks
When you say “real symlinks on OSX” do you mean an “alias” that Finder would create? Or a Unix-type symlink using the “ ln -s file link” command in Terminal? A Finder alias is not the same as a Unix-type symlink. My NAS runs Debian Linux with version 4.3.11 of smbd; my clients are all OSX Mojave. If I create an alias using Finder on the NAS, it behaves like a normal alias in OSX UNLESS I move

vfs fruit requires filesystem with extended attributes support?
Why do you want TM to work over samba? Not sure it is supported completely by Apple although they did have developer documentation on it at one time: https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/releasenotes/NetworkingInternetWeb/Time_Machine_SMB_Spec/ I did see this on reddit, but have not tried it personally:

When I created the User Documentation page "Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X?, my intent was to help others in the same situation I am: I have a WD MyCloud (Gen1) running an old version of samba (4.3.11) with no expectation that the firmware would be upgraded for the latest & greatest samba. The device is still usable, but was not optimized for Macs, so I ssh?d into the

Hyper-V Virtual Machines fail to start on Samba shares
Hello, I have problem with Samba 4.4.3. I'd like to use SMB 3.02 file shares as shared storage for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2. I am able to create Virtual Machine on Samba share using guest access, but when I try to start VM I'm getting the following error: "An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s). 'New Virtual Machine' could not

Question marks, asterisks, colons in filenames
Hi, I suppose this question must have been posted a hundred times, but Google brings up nothing useful: Consider "The Wall" from Pink Floyd in an MP3 collection. There's "In The Flesh.mp3" and "In The Flesh?.mp3" as tracks. Or, another example in an MP3 collection: There's a Band called "Stellar", but there's also a band called

Fwd: Client fails to mount with Samba running as daemon. Fine in foreground.
Hi all, Experiencing a really weird issue on my Samba instance (4.7.5). It is not allowing users to browse any shares when running as a systemctl daemon, but it is working fine when running as a foreground service. Contents of systemctl service unit: # cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service [Unit] Description=Samba SMB Daemon After=syslog.target network.target nmb.service winbind.service

I notice the Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X has been radically shortened?not sure why, but you may want to look at my original 22 Apr 2019 version in the history. You may want to put vfs objects in Global. Note in the vfs_fruit man page: Be careful when mixing shares with and without vfs_fruit. OS X clients negotiate SMB2 AAPL protocol extensions on the first tcon, so mixing shares

Use metadata files in Samba
Hello, Often people (or applications) want to store additional information about a file. E.g. history, approval state, search tags, etc. Some file formats offer to integrate these metadata, some not (e.g. exif- headers, id3, etc.). My idea would be to create an additional <filename.xyz>.meta file next to a <filename.xyz> in the same folder. If the <filename.xyz> gets

IOS connections to Samba 4 worked for years, now authentication fails
We have samba 4.8 and 4.9 servers that are Active Directory members. Windows and other samba clients can access the shares, and for years, iOS devices worked fine with Samba 4. But a few months ago, Apple IOS 10 and 11 devices started failing to authenticate. The problem is common to several iOS apps, FileBrowser, SMBManager, and some others all fail. The App vendors are stonewalling us, and

macOS performance issues
Hi, I?m currently setting up a samba Server on a Raspberry PI 4 with an external 8TB HDD. Since this is rather low end hardware, I?m trying to figure out which performance optimizations are still relevant today, since a lot has chanced in the past years and quite a few options are now set by default. The default values seem to work well for Windows but I?m having lots of issues with macOS.

Yes, I've tried all of them at this point. I spent some time focusing on SMB2 due to various sources indicating they target it for stability (example: Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X [ https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X] ). Thanks for the suggestion though. I've now been trying out the various Apple specific flags in vfs_fruit (

Hai, Personaly, i agree with Todd, having a few clear examples with the samba versionnumbering in it. How about, adding a sub page in : https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X With something like a section that shows : "User contributed examples" Rowland *(and Ralph), what do you guys think? Why not add a section like that for most things.

Its not about getting down and dirty, but about gettings a simple setup for samba version X.YY for users that are more beginners. And exactly my point a beginner, will fail,

Samba and macOS questions
After upgrading to macOS 10.15 I've hit an issue where if the share's connection is interrupted for long enough (e.g. because the server is rebooted) then the client Mac's Finder becomes stuck and?puts up a message 'The operation can?t be completed because the original item for ?<share>? can?t be found. Sometimes restarting Finder helps, sometimes restarting sharingd helps
