potential enterprise rails project
Hello Rubyists, I''m in the position of being given the job to design and build a mission-critical web facing application for a small but growing enterprise. It is to be used by customers as needed, numbering in the tens up to the hundreds. It will collect operational data, particularly in a table around 50 columns wide, and potentially millions of rows deep, most fields being numerical.

Three processes for each mongrel server?
Hi everyone. Zed, thanks for Mongrel. I''ve been running mongrel on my WiFi cafe site (http://wifi.earthcode.com), and it''s been great. It handled a front-page digg a few weeks ago without blinking. However, I''m setting up a staging environment right now, and I''m getting what looks like three mongrel processes *all listening on the same port* for each mongrel

RoR meets .net *cringe*
It was a miserable failure for us. Your best bet is to run on Linux. > 1. Has anyone done any benchmarks with it? Is there any reason this > couldn''t be viable for production loads? (feel free to speculate if you > haven''t) When it finally worked, after two weeks of trial and error (and we can''t reproduce it again) it performs poorly under IIS. It looks

Mongrel and Sandbox
Z-Man, DHH recently said: "And [_why''s] latest work on sandbox looks stellar. Making it drop-dead easy to run multiple Rails applications in the same Mongrel process without conflicts. Thumbs up to both him and Matz for getting Sandbox on track for inclusion with the next Ruby release." Does that mean what I think it means - that one or more Mongrel processes may one day be

Why Wouldn't I Use Rails
I am starting a large project and still selecting what framework to use. Rather than ask brand x what is wrong with brand y, I am more interested in self confession. Why would I *not* want to use Rails (compared to Iowa and Nitro). I posted a synopsis of the project to ruby-talk but will repost it here if anyone wants it. xev

mongrel stops responding after period of no use
I just moved from apache2/fcgi to apache2.2/mongrel and everything seems to work great except for 2 issues, one being major and one minor. the major issue i am experiencing is that after a period of time where my rails apps are not used, typically overnight, the mongrel processes become unresponsive. I currently have 3 apps running behind an apache2.2 proxy. every morning when i come in to

Controller Methods gets called twice on single invocation
I have no idea why this is happening but it seems like every method on my controller gets called twice. Here is what it looks like when I call a list using the scaffold code ========================== Processing DepartmentsController#index (for 127.0.0.1 at 2006-02-24 01:05:00) [GET] Parameters: {"action"=>"index", "controller"=>"departments"}

Server timeouts
Hi guys, Does anyone know if mongrel has a built-in timeout for requests that take too long? If so, how do you increase it? I''ve found that some server requests are timing out. Complicated requests are already being farmed out to asynchronous processes. But some of the more basic requests are timing out when we have our peak server load in the mornings (the bottleneck is the

mongrel cluster issues, plain old mongrel OK
I just created a test rails app, and am having very wierd issues with mongrel cluster. Here''s what I''m doing: rails test sudo chown -R mongrel:mongrel test cd test sudo mongrel_rails \ cluster::configure -e production \ -p 8000 -N 3 -a 127.0.0.1 --user mongrel \ --group mongrel It correctly writes the mongrel_cluster.yml file to the config directory. Now,

Is there a thread safe ActiveRecord replacement?
I''m using merb as an application server backend for a client application, the goal is to be able to handle thousands of parallell sessions (not parallell requests). It will use sendfile to send files. The controller uses an singleton that saves sessions in a hash that is memory resident cross requests, but isn''t persistent otherwise. I''m using ActiveRecord since there

Rails in a Windows World
I work at an organization that is very wrapped up in Microsoft products. I am trying to get a test application put in however I''m not sure what to do about the infratstructure. If it were up to me we would put in MySQL and Apache or Lighty, however its not up to me. The easiest way to get an application into production at our company would be to use the existing MS SQL server and IIS

Memory leaks in my site
Hi all, My environment is ruby-1.8.4, rails 1.2.2, mongrel 1.0.1, linux 2.6. Now, i have a problem on memory leaks with mongrel. My site is running 5 mongrel processes on a 2G RAM machine, the memory of each process grows from about 20M to about 250M, but it never recover to the initial 20M, so i had to restart the mongrel processes once per day. The load is about 1M hits per day. Waiting for

Rack, Camping 2.0++
=== 1. Camping on Rack === I''ve just finished rewriting Camping to use Rack in the "core". I got rid of (a little less) than 1kB in camping.rb and removed lots of un-necessary files (lib/server/*.rb, fastcgi.rb & mongrel.rb). bin/camping does now only provide WEBrick, Mongrel and console-support and should only be used in development. It uses Rack::ShowExceptions to catch

[ADV] "Mongrel: Serving, Deploying, and Extending Your Ruby Applications" BOOK
Time for some all time pimpage folks. Me and Matt Pelletier wrote a small PDF book on Mongrel entitled: "Mongrel: Serving, Deploying, and Extending Your Ruby Applications" since we really wanted you to know what it was about. It''s published by Addison Wesley Professional, has just over 100 pages of goodness, and is available for $14.99 at: http://safari.oreilly.com/0321483502

Output Compression in Mongrel?
I''d like to implement output compression in Mongrel (ala Apache''s mod_deflate). I have found a Rails plugin that, with minor modification, works. Is there even an advantage to moving the output compression from the Rails app to a Mongrel handler? Unless, of course, someone knows how to configure mod_proxy_balancer with mod_deflate... == Will Green Web Developer & IT
