Easy conversion/import/use of old samba databases(passwords) to samba4?
Background: A server running samba 3.6.3 on ubuntu 12.04 had a raid controller failure that also corrupted the disks. I set up temporary server by simply installing ubuntu 12.04 and copying over the configuration(/etc/samba, /var/lib/samba passwd shadow groups gshadow) from backup to a reserve workstation and it has worked fine as reserve server. Setup: uses a single server master domain

Winbind rid + SID History creating duplicate per-user groups
Since upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 (Samba 3.6.3) to Ubuntu 14.04 (Samba 4.1.6), I've noticed some strange problems with our group mappings: First, each of our Active Directory users now has a corresponding group in Linux. I don't remember ever noticing this in Ubuntu 12.04 / Samba 3.6.3. Is this feature new? Is it documented anywhere? (I tried searching online and couldn't find

samba security updates broke NT4 DC setup
I've been running a NT4-style domain with a samba 3.x PDC using a LDAP back end and it's mostly worked very will for a long time. However since yesterday, clients are having problems with the domain. I saw that updates came out on all my systems - my PDC and BDC are ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The samba version there still seems to be 3.6x. A client with a problem that was working is Ubuntu

Samba shares not refreshing in Windows after upgrade
I'm working with Samba on Ubuntu. We recently upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 and with it Samba 3.6.3 to 4.1.6 (Version: 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.3). Since the upgrade, the mapped network drives on Windows do not refresh the shared files. It maps to the location without any problems and you can look at the content of the share. If you exit the window and then create a new file or even touch an

samba-tool crashes if include = /patch/to/%U.conf in smb.conf
Hi, Samba4 (4.1.9) on Ubuntu 12.04 here (seen same behavior on 4.1.6 on Ubuntu 14.04). I've encountered an annoying bug with samba-tool, some exceptions aren't caught causing the tool to crash if it finds something it doesn't like in the smb.conf. I have a specific line in my conf : "include = /etc/samba/%U.smb.conf ", it's useful for applying specific samba

sssd-ad cannot be installed with sernet samba
Hello, I'm testing a classicupgrade using ubuntu 14.04 lts and the sernet samba packages. I also configured all other servers in the test network to use sssd, leaving the domain controller last, but I see that sssd-ad cannot be installed alongside sernet-samba. I see that this isn't a new problem, lingering at least since December 2013:

Moving from compiled to packages
I understand about using the newer binaries, but what I really want to "save" is the active directory. Sorry I should have been clear. I do not want to have to rejoin/recreate everything. Thanks. Ubuntu 14.04 samba update
When ubuntu 14.04 went from samba 4.1.6 to 4.3.8 it killed my setup. Before the change I was able to run wbinfo -u and get a list of users. Now when I run wbinfo -u it returns nothing. I tried dis-joining and rejoining the domain with no luck, Here is my complete smb.conf [global] security = ads realm = SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.TOP workgroup = SUBDOMAIN idmap config * : backend = tdb idmap config * :

Problem joining an AD
Hi list! I have a very strange problem... I configured Samba 4.1.6 on a Ubuntu 14.04 Server to act as AD-Controller. It works without any problem. Then I wanted to join the AD two other Servers with Ubuntu 14.04 and Samba 4.1.6. The first works without any problem, the second (same configuration!) not... Here my smb.conf: # Global parameters [global] workgroup = CCH realm =

Samba3 - WinXP - Domain not available
Hi, I am sure it has been discussed extensively somewhere, but I cannot find a satisfactory solution so far. We have a samba3 PDC running with Win7 machines (with the right hacks) without problems. We have been asked to add an old WinXP machine to the network but without success so far. The setup is as follow: Server : Samba 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Clients: Win 7 Ultimate (working) &

Please adwise on classicupgrade process
Greetings, All! I'm still on the topic, but probably I read too much stuff lately and can't have my head set straight. Situation: NT4 domain, LDAP+Samba 3.6, running under Ubuntu 12.04. The machine is also a network gateway and access (VPN/ssh) server. Target goals: 1. Upgrade to Samba4 (4.1 seems possible). 2. Convert to ADS. 3. Get rid of PAM-LDAP. 4. Retain ability for domain users

Why did samba4 remove "force security mode" and "force directory security"?
I just upgrade samba 3.6 to samba 4.3, folow the ubuntu 12.04 upgrade to 14.04. And I found out Samba 4 removed "force security mode" and "force directory security" from smb.conf. I don't understand why remove them, because I think they are irreplaceable. I need to keep some permission of the file or directory in the samba share and make sure them can't change by anyone
