Password hashing issue
Hello,
First off, thanks in advance for all of your help.
Now to my issue:
I am setting up my first email server. It will be for just me and a few
other people. I am using an Amazon EC2 server running Ubuntu 12.04. My MTA
is postfix.
As I said, this is my first time setting up an email server, so I am
following a guide that Arstechnia has published

Samba encrypt passwd
Hi,
I have samba installed on my Linux system (Red Hat
7.2), and
Windows 98 on another PC as a Samba client. Samba
works great
if PlainTextPassword is enabled. However, if
PlainTextPassword is
disabled on Windows client, connection to the Samba
shares no
longer accepted.
I believe I've done everything in order to make
encrypt passwd working:
* I converted /etc/passwd to

A bit OT...but here is a nifty Rails sighting.... ;)
According to arstechnica,
<http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/forever.ars>Duke Nukem Forever
has been ported to Ruby on Rails and is now rendered with
some kind of magic mishmash of svg-canvas and ajax! This truely is an
example of the incredible power of a web browser. Any hope for getting Mr.
Fowler to add a Recipe for this type of thing in his new book? ;)

Best version for production systems?
Hi dovecotters,
I have a system running 1.0rc1 right now and am having problems (more
on that later). I know that 1.0.5 is "current" but I'm running Debian
Stable (Etch) and have reservations of upgrading until nothing works
anymore ;-)
Do I really need to make the upgrade to 1.0.5, and if so can anyone
here point out how to do so using the standard Debian apt-get process?

dovecot and pop3
Dear dovecotters:
I'm becoming interested in dovecot as a replacement for UW-IMAPD. Any
project that claims it's the "postfix of ____ servers" deserves a looksee.
If indeed I were to going to switch at some point, I'd need to replace
the UW POP3 server (which is a part of the UW package). I would prefer
one that actually used the dovecot IMAP server instead of going to

Can't take user info from an alternate file
I'm positive I did everything right to get Dovecot to take usernames and
passwords from /etc/dovecot/users, but it still goes for /etc/passwd and
/etc/shadow. The format of /etc/dovecot/users is
"alice:{PLAIN}plaintextpassword" Here's my "doveconf -n":
# 2.0.19: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
# OS: Linux 3.2.0-51-virtual x86_64 Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

win2000 plaintext password
This is probably an FAQ, but my looking into the issue was unproductive.
When connecting to a samba share from a win2000 professional machine, I
get prompted for a password. Security is set to user on the samba
machine. I reenter the same password as the local user that I login as,
and then it accepts it.
I'm not using encrypted passwords, but I have added the PlainTextPassword

No.
User error (with apt-config files) is orthogonal to release quality.
And FWIW some people seem to be quite positive on 16.04:

Hardlinks in copy
Hi, Dovecotters.
In the Maildir code,
dovecot-0.99.10/src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-copy.c, I see that
hardlinks are used. It seems that (line 185) if
MAILDIR_COPY_WITH_HARDLINKS is exported, then copying is attempted by
using link.
Having problems reading the source / flow of control, I resort to this
list.
When a file is linked, the mtime is naturally kept on the destination.

2.2.8: browsing and accessing Sun from Windows XP
Hello,
First....
I have followed BROWSING.txt exactly on setting up WINS to
assist with browse list collection. I set up a workgroup that just
includes a bunch of Suns running Samba 2.2.8 across about 6 networks.
$ smbclient -L <domain_master_browser_host> -U %
run on the domain master browser shows all of the hosts on the 6
different networks after a while. Great. And from an XP
