PE2950, RAID 0, failed disk
I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with PERC 5/i, and 6 disks. Two disks have
one logical volume via a hardware RAID 1 and consist of CentOS 5 64-bit;
the remaining four comprise a logical volume via a hardware RAID 0, and
is all user data.
One drive on the RAID 0 went bad. I removed it while the system was on,
tried a reboot, and the system hangs at RedHat Linux... Starting

Help on ext3 file system corruption issue
Hi All,
I m a novice developer of Linux applications. Recently I faced a file
system corruption. (I guess)
I have a Kernel 2.4.7-10 with ext3 file system in compact flash. The
system was up for 3 months and was running with average load conditions.
One fine day, it just started sending kernel messages on the serial
console. The message was like this.
EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,2)):

Ext3 filesystem aborting journal at random times (Maxtor 300GB disk)
Hi,
Sorry if this is an old and fixed issue but I can't really seem to find
a definitive explanation/fix to this in the mail lists. Ever since I
upgraded to FC2 my server randomly decides that it can no longer access
the disk and "aborts" the ext3 journal leaving it read-only as
expected. I've seen the same errors on other mail list, explained away
as disk or disk cable

update from 4.2 to 4.3?
Hi List;
Whats the preferred method to update from 4.2 to 4.3? Can I use yum to do
this, If so, can someone send me the appropriate install or update command
string to pass to yum?
Also, Do I need to add any specific yum repositories or will the stock 4.2 yum
configuration work (assumint that yum is the best way to do the upgrade) ?
Thanks in advance for your help...

Quantum IDE HDD DMA issue.
I am running RH 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18-27.7.x.
Recently I have added a new 60GB Quantum IDE hard drive to the server. I
have set it up as a MASTER on a separate IDE channel. Two partitions on
the /dev/hdc are /dev/hdc1, /dev/hdc2 - both using ext3.
For more detailed HDD parameters, this is 'hdparm -i /dev/hdc':

Is there real benefits on a SMP machine for Asterisk?
Hi list,
I'm now considering to buy a new server for an Asterisk installation, since
I've been kindly
advised<http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/asterisk-users/2007-October/198146.html>not
to use an old server for a mission critical app...
Well, playing around in Dell's, HP's and IBM's online stores, I've noticed a

Asterisk/Machine Hang after calling in/out ISDN
I am testing Asterisk 1.4.22, zaptel 1.4.10.1 and libpri 1.4.4 on RHEL5
on DELL PE2950 and using ISDN-10.
I thought about cutting over to production tonight when I noticed a
serious problem.
SIP calls are fine but if I dialed to outside (Dial(Zap/g1)) a few times
or someone called in a few times, Asterisk just froze (cannot enter
anything on the CLI console) and then even the machine had to be

corrupted FS!
I have an apple Xserve RAID attached to a Linux Box, serving one Raided LUN
of 2500Gigs, it was functional until the box crashed. When I hard booted it,
even though it mounted the FS, I've been unable to access it. Cd-ing to any
of its directories gives "Input/Output error". The ls ?la on the FS shows

SMART and Dell PowerEdge 2950?
I have CentOS 5 installed on a few Dell PE2950 systems. ? ?The SMART
daemon claims the drives included with the server do not support
SMART, which rather surprised me.
What, then, are my options for monitoring the health of the server
hard drives? ?It would be nice to have some service running I could
email to myself on the status of each drive.
Thanks.

DVD Burner
I've purchased an LG DVD Burner (GSA-E60L) External super Multi DVD Rewiter
for my PE2950 Dell Server attached via USB.
Can someone guide me to set up the DVD with Linux, and which tools should I
use to burn DVD?

rootflags argument doesn't work with initrd.
I tried to convert / to ext3, so I went ahead and entered
rootflags=noload,journal=355 on the LILO prompt. The kernel failed to
mount /:
EXT3-fs error (device ramdisk(1,0)): ext3_get_inode_loc: bad inode number: 355
The boot device is a scsi hard disk, so initrd is used to load the scsi
driver, before mounting /. So, it looks like the kernel rootflags= arg
gets applied to the ramdisk, not the

Hello all.
I'm using RedHat 7.2 now and haven't have any problems until today. I

ext3 performance with hardware RAID5
I'm setting up a new fileserver. It has two RAID controllers, a PERC 3/DI
providing mirrored system disks and a PERC 3/DC providing a 1TB RAID5 volume
consisting of eight 144GB U160 drives. This will serve NFS, Samba and sftp
clients for about 200 users.
The logical drive was created with the following settings:
RAID = 5
stripe size = 32kb
write policy = wrback

Hardware infrastructure for email system
Hi,
I'm currently (re-)planning my email setup and have been doing some
research. I have done some searches and read several threads in the
areas of my questions here. While there are some that come close I
haven't yet been able to get all my questions answered.
I currently run a postfix, dovecot & roundcube setup and have about 2000
active accounts. I have a separate SMTP server

RAID5 or RAID50 for database?
we have DELL 6800 server with 12 internal disks in it. O.S. is CENTOS 4.6 and SCSI control card is PERC 4e/di.
We plan to configure 4 disks (5,8,9,10) as RAID5 or RAID50. This logical volume will be use as file systems and store database backup files.
Can anyone tell me which one is better on performance?
Thanks.

file system, kernel or hardware raid failure?
I had a busy mailserver fail on me the other day. Below is what was
printed in dmesg. We first suspected a hardware failure (raid controller
or something else), so we moved the drives to another (identical
hardware) machine and ran fsck. Fsck complained ("short read while
reading inode") and asked if I wanted to ignore and rewrite (which I
did).
After booting up again, the problem came
