Initially I did not, because based on
man paperconf
the default paper size is letter.
Still, after running
sudo paperconfig -p letter
which created /etc/papersize and restarting cups there are no

Any other suggestions? Does anyone on this list use CUPS as a print server

Poll: Does R_PAPERSIZE in /etc/R/Renviron matter?
A heuristic runs via the r-base-core package postinst. It is intended
to use the result from Debian's paperconf(1) toool, and to update the R
environment variable R_PAPERSIZE accordingly. This apparently broke some
time ago when R changed to a dual variable setup, and my regexp didn't
notice.
Does anybody use this, or is it ok if I simply disable this in Debian? In
that case we simply

Centos 6 Airprint using CUPS/Avahi
I've set up another airprint server, but this time I've had to use Centos 6
because of the age of the kit I'm using - an old 1U rack server.
I've configured CUPS and also Avahi. I've run airprint-generate.py and copied
the .service files to /etc/avahi/services/
Everything looks fine until I try to print from my IPhone. I usually test by
trying to print an email. As soon

Airprint to old printer using Centos server
Hi Gary
I got this working in a previous role a while ago:
http://thirdlineit.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/active-directory-authenticated-airprint.html
(ignore the authentication aspects). I also managed to do it recently
on my home network using Ubuntu, so the principle still works.
Summary:
1. Install CUPS
2. Enable IPP for the printer queues
3. To make the printers visible across

R_PAPERSIZE and LC_PAPER
R uses the environment variable R_PAPERSIZE to set its papersize, e.g. for
postscript.
It seems the modern way is to via LC_PAPER, e.g.

and Googling will show that people expect this to work.
However, that is not set on my FC3 system, and it would affect people who
use en_US as their locale in, say, Austria.
Should we be making use

W2k devmode
Our server is a SuSE Linux 7.2 with CVS samba 2.2 branche. Version number is

We have a problem with the default devmode in Windows 2000 (SP2) clients. We have
uploaded the printerdrivers to the share print$. The Samba printeradministrator is able
to change the printer capabilities as memory, trays, papersize. etc. Changes are global:

How to infer default width and height for a device?
Hi.
GENERAL:
Is there a general method for inferring default device settings,
particularly 'width' and 'height', that works for all devices? AFAIK,
the answer is no, but there might be functions out there that I don't
know of.
POSTSCRIPT SPECIFIC:
If not, I'm considering implementing such a method myself. Is it
possible for R to infer the default 'width' and

Polycom subscriptions
Somewhat off topic.
We upgraded a Polycom phone from SIP v1.6.3 to v1.6.6
The phone will no longer send SIP subscription messages for buddies to Asterisk. I have broken the directory file down to make it as simple as possible.
Here is what it contains.

dev.copy2eps: position of figure on page
The definition for dev.copy2eps contains the following line:
oc$paper <- "special"
The result of this is that the output will be placed in the left
bottom corner of the page. Even though dev.copy2eps is meant for
creating files that are to be included into other documents, you
might want to print the figure directly, just to see how it will
look on paper. (Of course, this will

I often use Lyx/Sweave and I typically write in english.
Today I had to write a document in Italian and, as many of you know,
many italian popular words use ?, ?, ?. ?, etc.
I discovered that if I type in Italian (that is there is at least one
letter with accent) with the Sweave module selected lye is not able
to correctly compile the document.
I tried to change the input encoding, but it

Samba PDC on FreeBSD problem?
Problem: Samba running as a PDC on a FreeBSD, the clients can connect
without computer accounts and browse the shares in the domain.
Should the PDC allow that?
As far as i have understood the PDC should refuse since the computer
does not have a account in the domain regardless that the user have a
user account?
Can it somehow be that i have named the computers as the users, user bob

off topic A4 paper
Dear R People:
Please excuse the off topic question.
What are the dimensions of A-4 Paper, please?
Actually, the question should read, "how do I set up a LaTex file
to fix A-4 paper, please?"
Thanks much!

Question: HP LaserJet III
Here is my bit "o" problem:
We have an HP Laser Jet III with the postscript add on. We have been
using the printer under samba for while, but every print job, there is a
page that says %[LAST PAGE]% + other garbage. Does anybody know of any
hacks or fix's to get the printer / samba to get this system to not
print that last page.

A few weeks back I built a new Centos 7 server from a 4 year old workstation
PC, and a brand new HDD.
This PC had no prior problems other than it ran Windows 7. Thew new HDD is

Samba 2.2.5 Printing problem with HP Designjets
Hello,
I sent this request already last week, but got no answer (maybe I did
not use a good subject).
My problem is the following:
I use server side drivers with samba 2.2.5 and cups. I add them usually
with cupsaddsmb. This works quite well, but I have trouble with printers
with really large papersizes. I have some HP Designjet in our Network,
we need for our mechanical engineers, as well as
