new ssd to play with
I grabbed a new SSD M4-CT064M4SSD2 from Crucial. I am disappointed. I stuck the unit in an Atom machine (zotac) with CentOS 6 on the disk. It really doesn't "feel" faster than the previous 5400 RPM drive that was in it. The SSD is giving me (in the zotac running centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 298 MB in 3.00 seconds = 99.30 MB/sec The

USB 2.0 device on a USB 3.0 plug
When I plug in my device which is USB 2.0 into a 3.0 slot (cause that is all I have) [495042.943074] usb 5-2: new low-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd [495043.100076] usb 5-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 I receive the above error. Is there a flag or setting that tells the USB to in a 2.0 mode ? Thanks, Jerry

CentOS 7.6 external USB dmesg issue
I have a brand new 2T external Samsung SSD disk. (two of them) for backup. I tried the first one and had an issue, I tried the second one and got the same issue. Am I doing something wrong ? I find it hard to believe the SSD (both) are bad. I plugged in the USB 3.1 adapter, I fdisk /dev/sdd, n, p, default, default, w. then mkfs.ext4 -j /dev/sdd1, then just mount and rsync. [ 1085.193710]

qeum on centos 8 with nvme disk
Hi All - I use qemu on my centOS 7.7 box that has software raid of 2- SSD disks. I installed an nVME drive in the computer also. I tried to insall CentOS8 on it (the physical /dev/nvme0n1 with the -hda /dev/nvme0n1 as the disk. The process started installing but is really "slow" - I was expecting with the nvme device it would be much quicker. Is there something I am missing how to

Question on server speed
On 8/5/19 3:00 PM, Jerry Geis wrote: > The keyboard is USB attached and the external SSD disk is USB attached. WHY? Why would you do that? What's the point of SSD if you reduce the speed to USB? Or just use an old mechanical drive instead. Any issue with that drive will show up as IO Wait - my presumption is that you expect to see that so you're not mentioning it but it's going to

OT: laptop recommendations for CentOS6
Hi all, First of all, sorry for the OT. I need to buy a new laptop for my work. My prerequisites are: - RAM: 6/8 GiB (preferably 8 GiB) - Processor: Core i7 - Disk: up to 500 GiB for SATA, 128 GiB for SSD. - Graphics card: Intel HD (I really hate to use Nvidia or ATI Radeon graphics cards). The most important tasks will be: - Surf the web :) - Read email - And the Most important

lshw in centos 7 withdrawn
Warren Thanks for the thoughts. Even with 'dmesg', I found nothing. The reboot got rid of the problem and it continues to run perfectly in the same configuration. I, too, have a slight dislike for external USB disks, and much prefer internal drives for esveral reasons: - Internal drives are protected by being inside a tower and thus have less chance of falling or being bumped than

zlib vs lzo uncompress speed, ssd vs nossd
I just setup a new SSD with my laptop root filesystem, and at the time I though, "eh, I''ll just use zlib compression during the first copy, and then switch to lzo afterwards to maintain write speed when I''m using the laptop after the copy and reboot". Now, I rebooted with the new ssd and zlib compressed rootfs, and it seemed to boot slower than it did before with the

Thinkpad X61s cannot boot 9.1-BETA1
Hi, Did anyone else experience this? With 9.1-BETA1 the boot process freezes, among the last lines with verbose boot are acpi_acad0: On Line acpi_acad0: acline initialization done, tried 1 times after this, dead. What is supposed to happen in the next stage? This laptop worked fine with 9-STABLE to at least february. //per

Couple of questions about ZFS on laptops
Hello all, I am thinking about a new laptop. I see that there are a number of higher-performance models (incidenatlly, they are also marketed as "gamer" ones) which offer two SATA 2.5" bays and an SD flash card slot. Vendors usually position the two-HDD bay part as either "get lots of capacity with RAID0 over two HDDs, or get some capacity and some performance by mixing one

zvol wrapped in a vmdk by Virtual Box and double writes?
Hi folks, (Long time no post...) Only starting to get into this one, so apologies if I''m light on detail, but... I have a shiny SSD I''m using to help make some VirtualBox stuff I''m doing go fast. I have a 240GB Intel 520 series jobbie. Nice. I chopped into a few slices - p0 (partition table), p1 128GB, p2 60gb. As part of my work, I have used it both as a RAW
