Mate and USB headphones
Logitech H540 headphones were working fine.
Suddenly stopped.
Sound Preferences says they are disabled but gives no hints on how to
enable them, or how they became disabled.
Tried rebooting, unplugging them, etc.
Anyone know what is going on?
This motherboard doesn't have onboard sound, this USB is my only option.
And GNOME simply isn't usable for me, I used GNOME for years but

Extreme frustration with GIMP
I am not a graphics person. Also can't afford to hire one.
Trying to follow instructions at
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-quickie-separate.html
I use the "intelligent scissors" just like they say, spend quite a bit
of effort doing so.
Then click the foreground select tool - just like they say - and
suddenly everything I did with the intelligent tool is undone.
WTF?

Just need to vent
I personally love Gnome3 on Fedora. It took me about a week to adjust my
mindset though -- I did that over a Xmas break.
It did help that I read the release notes first (so I was not surprised at
the major change) and went through the tutorial the developers provided.
An interesting exercise re-examining and critiquing old workflows and
exploring alternatives. It works really well on the

Just need to vent
Sometimes the direction of UI development in gnome really angers me.
For example, when selecting a font for the gedit text editor - there is
no way to ask it to only show monospace fonts.
It's a fricken text editor, that should be the default - meaning you
have to do something special to get fonts shown that aren't monospace.
Seriously, who is in charge with the UI design in gnome?

Network Manager / CentOS 7 / local unbound
Hello list -
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/90035/how-to-set-dns-resolver-in-fedora-using-network-manager
That says it works for CentOS 5 and I *suspect* the methods there (3
listed) would work, but what is the best way with NetworkManager to set
it up to use the localhost for DNS ?
I'm paranoid about DNS spoofing and really prefer to have a local
instance of DNSSEC enforcing

RHEL 8 speculation ???
Is there any blog that has information on a potential RHEL 8 release date?
boost in 7 is now too old for some things, in addition to gcc. There are
solutions in 7 to those issues but it's starting to feel like 6 felt
shortly before 7 came out, so I wonder if it is getting near to time.
I'm working on a major project bitcoin related and it would be
frustrating to deploy a bunch of

M.2 PCI-E card
Hello list,
My instinct says the vast majority will "just work" but I'll ask anyway.
I need a low profile PCI-E card that allows for up to 2 M.2 SSD drives
that is known to work with the stock kernel in CentOS 7.
Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks

sorting the VAR model output according to variable names??
I was wondering if one can have the coefficients of VAR model sorted
according to variable names rather than lags. If you notice below, the
output is sorted according to lags.
>VAR(cbind(fossil,labour),p=2,type="const")
VAR Estimation Results:
