old hardware / minimal netinstall -> CPU fan control
Warning:I'm new to CentOS and have not tested the suggestion below (with Linux). So please research if it sounds like a good idea. It may be worth trying to bypass the issue by installing VMware ESXi and setting up CentOS as a virtual machine. This will give you additional control and backup options for the system. old hardware / minimal netinstall -> CPU fan control
I have just installed CentOS 6 i386 onto an old rack server (it's gonna be a Bacula storeage server and is a 1U 1/2 depth chassis) I did a minimum netinstall and so far so good. However, I have one problem. The CPU fan is going at full speed constantly. Not a real problem apart from (a) it will affect the fan's lifespan and (b) it's noisy. I've done some Googling and found

network prob on Centos 4.4/HP DL320 G2
Hi! I've installed Centos 4.4 on a machine at work (it's a HP Proliant DL-320 G2 rackmout server that serves my desktop). In recent days (Centos 4.4 has only been installed for a little over a week), like, since Wed or Thu last week, every time I reboot Kudzu wants to remove the network adaptors then reinstall them and breaks the network. I've gone to the point of disabling one of

Symlink outside the share path
Hello everyone -- I am stumped on this issue, mostly because I'm not quite sure if it's behaving correctly or not. I believe this used to work and right now I'm not quite sure why it's no longer doing so and how to fix it (if possible). I suspect it is because of my recent update of the OS and Samba version. When users are trying to follow a symlink that goes to a different

odd issue with ipmitool
Got an older server running 6.5. I've been fighting it - I have two webcams for surveillance of the room; one works with motion, but it resizes the picture down Adjusting resolution from 640x480 to 360x296 and the video's dark and bad contrast. So I went back to the camer I'd been using before that worked fine... on CentOS 5.x, and then I remembered why I'd gone to the other camera

Fan speed control on Supermicro X8DAL board with CentOS
Hello folks, I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out why the CPU cooling fans run at full speed on my Supermicro X8DAL-3 motherboard. There doesn't seem to be any variable speed (the fans are PWM compatible) ... they either idle at almost nothing, or suddenly burst into a high-pitched scream that gets my ears bleeding after a few seconds. Once they jump to warp-10, they

Interesting admin info: ipmitool
I've used ipmitool any number of times, but never for more than getting info, or setting the server name on a Dell LCD screen. However, I had a server screaming about intruder alert, intruder alert, er, "Chassis intrusion detected", and I thought there might be a way to shut it up (this after pulling the server and reseating the lid). A quick google found, on the first page, an 8
