[nbdkit PATCH v2] server: Permit - in plugin names
Use of - does not need shell quoting, and aids legibility in multi-word plugin or filter names. Permitting both - and _ would be ambiguous (not to mention that things like 'man nbdkit-foo_bar-plugin' would look ugly), so prefer only the character that is easier for human use. Permitting a leading - would be ambiguous with options, but restricting to a letter as the first character would

[PATCH libnbd v2 0/4] Pass LISTEN_FDNAMES with systemd socket activation
This is an alternative approach to https://listman.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2023-January/030535.html After discussing this with Dan Berrange we came to the conclusion that you really might want to set LISTEN_FDNAMES to arbitrary short strings (or not set it). Especially when talking to qemu-storage-daemon which would allow you to use these names on the command line. Rich.

[nbdkit PATCH 2/9] server: Consolidate common backend tasks into new backend.c
Both plugin.c and filter.c add the same three fields on top of struct backend, and use very similar code in initializing them. Let's stop the duplication, by moving those three fields into struct backend, and creating a new backend.c for manipulating them. In turn, we can drop the backend->name() accessor in favor of just directly accessing the name field. This is a net reduction in

[PATCH nbdkit v2 2/6] main: Tighten up characters permitted in config keys.
Previously key=value on the command line allowed the key to be pretty much anything that didn't contain an '=' character. Even empty strings were permitted. This tightens up the permitted keys so they must contain only ASCII alphanumeric, period, underscore or dash characters, and must not be an empty string. --- docs/nbdkit-plugin.pod | 18 ++++++++++-------- src/main.c

[PATCH nbdkit 2/3] Refactor plugin_* functions into a backend struct.
Introduce the concept of a backend. Currently the only type of backend is a plugin, and there can only be one of them. Instead of calling functions like ‘plugin_pwrite’ you call the backend method ‘backend->pwrite (backend, ...)’. The change is largely mechanical. I was able to remove ‘assert (dl)’ statements throughout since we can now prove they will never be called. Note this does not

[PATCH 2/2] build: Replace ./nbdkit with a C program.
There are advantages to having the same code parse the options in the ./nbdkit wrapper as in the real nbdkit: - We can parse options in exactly the same way as the real program. - Use the more accurate ‘is_short_name’ test for unadorned plugin/filter names on the command line. - Fixes the FreeBSD problem with shebangs caused because FreeBSD refuses the use a shell script as a shebang path.

[PATCH nbdkit filters-v2 2/5] Introduce filters.
Filters can be placed in front of plugins to modify their behaviour. This commit adds the <nbdkit-filter.h> header file, the manual page, the ‘filterdir’ directory (like ‘plugindir’), the ‘filters/’ source directory which will contain the actual filters, the ‘--filters’ parameter, and the filters backend logic. --- Makefile.am | 2 +- TODO | 17 +-
