Ruby Koans an amazing platform for teaching programming. Would this work with R?
For those not familiar Ruby Koans is a fantastic platform for teaching many
of the basics of programming in the Ruby language. It uses unit tests
written for methods each of which describe a component of the Ruby
programming language.

The koans platform has become popular enough that it has been translated to
a few other popular languages.

Kerberos Password Changes
Hi all,
I apologize if I am getting into a subject that has been hashed and rehashed
endlessly on this list, but I am just not finding exactly what I am looking
for in terms of a response.
At the moment, I have Linux and Solaris servers happily authenticating to my
MIT Kerberos KDC, and fetching user information via an OpenLDAP server with
a StartTLS connection (and authenticating to the LDAP

Total Annihilationcd annd map problems
I've heard that Total Annihilation (a fantastic game) runs in wine,
(frankscorner.org and som other people on various malinglists). I've
applied the 3.1 patch (ta1x-31c.exe) and tried to run the game under
wine-20050628 in Fedora Core 4 with 2.6.11 kernel, it starts and I press
"single", no problem, but when I try to press "new campagne" or

success: compilation of python2.5.2 under wine+msys+mingw32
hi folks,
i promised i'd get python built under wine - and i'm happy to report
that this goal has been successfully achieved.
http://bugs.python.org/issue4954 if anyone's interested. what has
been achieved is that a python.exe, libpython2.5.dll, an implib
libpython2.5.dll.a and a python2.5.def have all been successfully
created using an entirely free software toolchain, along with the

Question about Wine
Are there any limits to this program? Will it in the future be able to run Windows games as if it was being run native? If so I will without a doubt donate to this project. If there are any roadblocks that we know we can't do would you kindly inform me of this?
I use an integrated graphics chipset. I know it's nothing special, but I've noticed blackish graphical errors running various

Wine release 1.0
The Wine team is proud to announce that Wine 1.0 is now available.
This is the first stable release of Wine after 15 years of development
and beta testing. Many thanks to everybody who helped us along that
long road!
While compatibility is not perfect yet, thousands of applications have
been reported to work very well. Check http://appdb.winehq.org to see

Copy to 3.0.9-2.3-SUSE dies after 1.2 gb copied
I have Samba 3.0.9 on SuSE 9.2 on a P-III-500 with only 352mb of RAM. The
share I'm copying to is on a SCSI RAID array handled by a Compaq Smart-2/P
RAID Controller (rev 04) as identified by lspci. The RAID is all LVM and
the share is ReiserFS-- maybe not the best choice for something which is so
slow to write to.
Anyhow, the problem is that when I copy to the share "movies" it

Server not shutting down before power loss
HI thanks for replying and helping.
I've now ran the UPS down a few times from full charge to test and I don't
think it's the batteries or a problem with the UPS itself. I can watch it
go from 100% right down to 1% over 20 minutes etc and then the power gets
so low that everything just powers off!
I think it's down to Nut not actually shutting down my server that is my
problem...

comparision with other imap servers and folder sharing
Some praise:
Timo, I must say I am super impressed with this product. I do free
support a few good friends with small businesses running Linux servers
(a mix of RH9, Suse9.2 and gentoo) that I dropped as email and samba
servers. I found UW-IMAP to be terrible in every way except that using
mbox is sometimes nice for old s/w tools. No need for details re UW-IMAP
problems. In early 2004 I found

Good Luck. As mentioned before, this would be cool but not as simple,
even in theory, as it sounds.

tiny bug in R installation (redhat)
First, let me join the chorus of praise for R. (Hey, isn't somebody going
to analyse all these praise emails in some statistical way?)
I'm writing to point out an error in the file permissions in the
linux/redhat version. (I'm using R-base-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm, by the way.)
The permissions in /usr/lib/R/doc/html aren't correct, since

R (development) changes in arith, logic, relop with (0-extent) arrays
Prior to the mid-1990s, S did "length-0 OP length-n -> rep(NA, n)" and it
was changed
to "length-0 OP length-n -> length-0" to avoid lots of problems like
any(x<0) being NA
when length(x)==0. Yes, people could code defensively by putting lots of
if(length(x)==0)...
in their code, but that is tedious and error-prone and creates really ugly
code.
Is your suggestion to

R (development) changes in arith, logic, relop with (0-extent) arrays
Shouldn't binary operators (arithmetic and logical) should throw an error
when one operand is NULL (or other type that doesn't make sense)? This is
a different case than a zero-length operand of a legitimate type. E.g.,
any(x < 0)
should return FALSE if x is number-like and length(x)==0 but give an error
if x is NULL.
I.e., I think the type check should be done before the length

Fwd: Re: "Graphics history" in UNIX
Many thanks again for your code.
Actually, manual typing of the function names to record or review plots
is not a practical solution for me.
I taught it would be a quick task to program Function keys for this purpose.
I uselessly spent time messing with a "<home>.initrc " file.
The only solution I found is to write the functions names, via Bash
menu

Mac OS X version of Wine should be official
I have a new Mac OS X system that I want to run some games on. I don't want to have to buy Windows just to run a few games (which is the reason for the switch, as well as for doing photography). I downloaded the beta version for Mac OS and it runs fantastic. No problems, good templates (although there could be more), and easy of use make it great and a joy to use.
I don't understand why

[SUMMARY] openssh: ld: mismatched ABI
Original question:
-----------------
[..] What I am attempting to do is compiling openssh-2.2.0p1 on a C200
running 11.0 64bit.
During configure, ld exits from building a test program stating:
/usr/ccs/bin/ld: /opt/openssl/lib/libcrypto.a: Not a valid library
(invalid magic number). Possibly a 64-bit PA archive library (Mismatched
ABI). [..]
