mtext uses the typographical descender to align text
<>
Hello
One sometimes (quite often really ) marvel at the choice of defaults in
R's graphic engine.
For some obscure reason, mtext uses the typographical descender (bottom
of letters) to align text. That is: "gG" will end up slightly higher
that "GG". Depending on the font, "Q" might end up higher than "O".

Firefox3 for CentOS4 -- dependency on evolution28 packages?
I'd been putting off installing the FX3 packages because of some
extensions I use that don't have upgrades. [*] However, when FX1.5
crashed on me today I decided to finally go ahead. Fired up yum and
I'm told I have to install a slew of evolution28 library packages in
order to install the firefox package. Why? I removed evolution from
my system for a reason, and I'd just as

R-beta: Suggestion for a very minor change to Rd.sty
Dear R gurus and users,
for some functions in some of the many packages available for R, with
the current definition of \Header given in Rd.sty, the heading bumps
into the surrounding words in documentation printed via LaTeX. To
alleviate this minor typographical mishap, I'd like to suggest the
change to R/doc/manual/Rd.sty included below as a context diff. With
this minor diff applied, the

Hello CentOS-docs from NeoPhyte_Rep
My CentOS wiki username is NeoPhyte_Rep.
<http://wiki.centos.org/NeoPhyte_Rep>
I'm always glad when a project maintains a wiki, even if there is a process
to obtain editing rights.
There is nothing more frustrating as I try to understand the structure and
subject of a project than to run across typographical errors and grammar
hiccups. I know this means I will need access to the entire

Wierd Errors...
Hey Folks...
I get the feeling that this has probably been covered before, but I
could not find the answer in the "back issues" of the mailing list so here
goes.
I am running a linux machine with samba loaded. One of the other
folks that I work with is running NT Workstation 4.0, Service Pack 3. I
want him to be able to use a plotter on my linux box. Other folks running

bug in pnorm (PR#699)
Full_Name: James Michael Rath
Version: all (I think)
OS: doesn't matter
Submission from: (NULL) (129.116.226.162)
The code for pnorm in R was adapted from a Fortran library published in the ACM
TOMS journal. The published version had a typographical error, though, which
was
pointed out in a second article published three years after the original.
The error was that a macro/variable named

PHP SmartyPants Typographer 1.0b2
As I stated before, I had in the work a utility to control spaces
around punctuation and at some other places. Now, I've integrated it,
with a few extra quote goodies, within PHP SmartyPants, as an
extension just like PHP Markdown Extra extends PHP Markdown.
And so appeared SmartyPants Typographer (announcement on my weblog)

difficulty with R expressions in text/legend
hi, i'm trying to prepend some plain (i.e. unevalutated) text to a
typographically evaluated R expression in a legend(...) call.
here's a working legend(...) call that is close to what i'd like
(where x and y are returned from an lm(...) call):
legend("topleft", legend = c(bquote(R^2 == .(summary(x)$r.squared)),
bquote(R^2 == .(summary(y)$r.squared))), fill =

Maps, Eastern Europe
Dear all,
I would like to employ a European map in a presentation. My idea was to
use:
library(mapdata)
map("worldHires", c("Austria", "Switzerland", "Germany"))
where I include all countries from my analysis as a vector of character
strings like in the example above. Unfortunately, I was unable to
specify the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) or

scp, sftp, and special characters in filenames
I have not been able to get scp(1) to download a file with a newline
in its name. I know that scp(1) requires that remote filenames be
escaped for the shell, but that leads to protocol errors.
I am also unable to get sftp(1) to handle such files. It fails with
an ?unterminated quoted argument? error, no matter how I try to
quote the newline. Furthermore, the SFTP CLI is not well-suited to

RedCloth and lang specific hooks
Hi,
I use textilize() which is a great way of letting end users edit contents.
But the code in RedCloth is quite compact, and doesn''t allow for easily
adding correct typographic behaviour depending on the lang of the text.
For instance, correct quoting uses round double quotes in english and
double carons ? ? in french; the spaces before punctuation can be
corrected too. I''d
