KPPP: why root?
Hi All, I'm wondering about something that seems a bit odd. I've setup a CentOS 4 box for a client that is "still" using dial-up and to activate the connection appears to require root privileges. Why is this? The reason Linux was loaded on this box was to provide a very functional box that could be easily locked down so when the cat was away the mice couldn't play,

apt repo's for centos
I downloaded and installed apt and synaptic using yum ok, but are there corresponding apt repo's for the yum ones? NFS insanity
Hi all, I've got some insanity with mounting an NFS share that before reloading my workstation afresh worked perfectly, but now refuses to mount. Actually there are two servers with shares mounted. (1) Mandrake 10.0 file server - two shares - mount perfectly (2) Fedora Core 3 - one share - can't mount to save my life! My workstation is CentOS 4. I reloaded it to get rid of the FC3

Turning Wireless Radio on and off: how?
Hi all, I've got a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a Broadcom 1390 Wlan mini card (integrated) wireless lan chipset. I've got an init script setup to activate the wireless connection at boot time, however when the system boots the adapter doesn't connect. I'm not able to get a connection until after the desktop is done loading and I run the script from the command line. After some

Raidcore SATA support
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has tried and succeeded to use this controller. Its the bc4852 SATA controller. There's supposed to be support for it, but so far we've not been able to get the driver to load during the install and thus we've got no "valid drive" on which to load the OS. thanks, -- Mark

Up to date guide/information Sendmail SMTP Auth
Hello all, I've been googling my brains out since yesterday looking for up-to-date information on this matter, and have found information that is anywhere from 15 to 5 years old. I'd really like some information that much more up to date on the subject. Specifically configuring Sendmail SMTP authentication (_no smart host stuff_). I've got Sendmail 8.14 installed on a CentOS 7.3

adaptec 2100S drivers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, I've got a server that I'm rebuilding and I've been given an Adaptec 2100S single channel scsi card to use. Problem is I can't find drivers for CentOS 4 anywhere. So far I've tried the adaptec drivers on the install CD but when it comes time to use disc druid it doesn't see the array that I've setup. don't

Annoying Mouse Tricks
Hi All, Something that just has been annoying the daylights out of me for the past 9 months with no resolution in site. I've got a Hawking HKS 104 4 port KVM connecting my Linux workstation, 2 servers, and my wife's windows workstation to one monitor, mouse, and keyboard. konsole failure to
Everyone, I am evaluating Centos to be for the purpose of using it as a server for a database. I doubt that I will use anything but run level 3, but am looking at the gui tonight. I am having difficult using konsole with the same scripts that I have used on FC4, FC5, and FC6 with success. I am executing this command from a Desktop link konsole --vt_sz 80x25 --profile smile with smile being

Yum Mirror Errors
While attempting to grab some packages from the repos I've been getting a lot of mirror errors. Anyone have any idea why? I've recently updated from CentOS 5 Beta2 to the final version and it went flawlessly. The first thing I did though was to update the centos-release packages per a previous post. I was under the impression this would take care of repo problems. Was I incorrect?

KDE frustrations, now
So I d/l gqview from where I found the rpm, and installed it. It didn't show in my kde menu, so I did something *really* dumb: I ran the kde menu updater. Now I can't lock my screen. Nothing at all happens. Nothing shows in .xsession-errors, nothing shows in /var/log/messages. I restored all of .kde/share from last night's backup... and the screensaver still doesn't go, and

Core dumps in KDE 3.1 something do with libc_r
Not everytime but most times when I close a program I get the application box and in the backtrace box the error is always the same. I've attached the blacktrace log. Besides this KDE functions fine and never happens when using an application on when closing one. compiz-fusion-kde-0.6.2-3.1 Window Decoration Crash?
Guys, SuSE 10.3, compiz-fusion-kde-0.6.2-3.1, fglrxG01-8.43.3-0.1, xorg 7.2. I just experienced a complete window decoration crash where all window decorations disappeared. kwin --replace followed by a emerald --replace cured the problem. This is the first crash since installing 6.2-3.1 about 12 hours ago. Is there anything helpful I can post that might identify the cause of the problem? --

dumb debian question
Hi all! I have installed Debian on a partition of my desktop. When I first installed it, I got the Debian logo, with the appropriate icons. Now when I go into Debian, I just get a command line. What should I do to get to the regular screen, please? Thanks, Erin -- Erin Hodgess Associate Professor Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences University of Houston - Downtown mailto:

CentOS 6: Making KDE Default
I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.
