Another CentOS 5 oddity: reboot and the X server fails to come up
I had to reboot my work machine today, and it came up in text mode (!). I did an init 5, but that had no effect (wrong command?). I killed the three gdm processes, and voila, X server mode. Where do I look to find out what is not right here? Trouble connecting to CentOS 5.0 host sound device from Windows guest on VMWare Workstation 5.5.4
I am running VMWare Workstation 5.5.4 on a CentOS 5.0 host (2.6.18-8.1.4 kernel) and I have been haiving some trouble with my sound device on the Guest Windows XP SP2 OS. When I first had trouble under CentOS 4.4, WS 5.5.3, it was usually when the sound device on the host was actually busy. However, now I can't use the sound device at all - I keep getting this error: "Failed to open sound

AcroRead failing miserably in CentOS 5.0
I could swear that this was working just last week, but now when I run the Adobe Acrobat reader, it hangs. If I run it "directly" (/usr/bin/acroread) with -DEBUG as the first argument, I get an infinite loop of: expr: syntax error I tried removing and reinstalling it, but no change. Screensaver flashing instead of normal function
I rebooted my machine this morning and now instead of running normally, my GLMatrix screen saver flashes as it repaints the screen, more and more noticeably as the screen fills up with glyphs. I didn't change ANYTHING and this was not happening before the boot. Anyone have any ideas why this might be? Thanks. Mark Hull-Richter, Linux Kernel Engineer DATAllegro (www.datallegro.com) 85

Error building kernel for CentOS 5.0
I thought I had all the tools I needed for this, but it seems something is missing. When I build the 2.6.18-8.1.3 kernel from source, I get this error: extracting debug info from /var/tmp/kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.trace-root/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.el5.trace-x86_64/scripts/conmakehash extracting debug info from

Missing samba binaries
I went to enable samba on my home machine, which has a largely plain vanilla install of CentOS 4.4 Plus, and the smbd and nmbd files are missing. As you may know, this makes it rather difficult to run samba. For some reason, the winbindd binary is present, and rpm reports: samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.11 samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.11 as present. So how do I retrieve the missing samba binaries/ Do

Is it possible/advisable to run CentOS 4.4 and 5.0 on the same box
We are in the process of transiting from 4.4 to 5.0 and I may need to be able to switch back and forth for a while. Is it possible (or advisable) to run both 4.4 and 5.0 on the same machine, or does that involve a lot of reinstalling/repartitioning and a fair amount of pain (I have only one disk on the test machine for this purpose). I'd rather just go to 5.0, but that's not up to me at

Changing from NTFS to ext3
I want to convert all my NTFS partitions to ext3 since I'm no longer running Windows, at least on my main machine at home. I'm planning to tar the NTFS partitions to an existing ext3, reformat the partition as ext3 and untar it back. What is the best way to accomplish step two of this - reformatting the partition? I've only done this so far during the installation phase, and that

Open Office on CentOS
I notice that the OO that comes with CentOS 4.4 is version 1.1.5, which is fairly ancient. Are there any plans to update this for OO 2.2, or 2.1, or 2.0? Or is this a RH thing exclusively? In which case is CentOS Plus likely to get a more recent version? OO 2.0 is way better.... Mark Hull-Richter Linux Kernel Engineer (949) 680-3082 - Office (949) 680-3001 - Fax (949)

Stumped: kernel 2.6.18-8 source doesn't build???
I installed the kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.src.rpm today and went to build it, but it fails with this error: $ rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec Building target platforms: x86_64 Building for target x86_64 error: Failed build dependencies: unifdef is needed by kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64 I double checked and this appears to be the latest kernel source rpm on centos/5.0/os/SRPMS.

Screensavers for CentOS 5.0
Probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway. Are there any other screensavers available besides the four supplied in the release? Or is there a way to use the ones that came with 4.4 in 5.0?.... Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey
I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5, although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew less about CentOS then (duh). Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head problem) is pathetically

Error on sound files with totem removed
I decided to go ahead and remove totem (don't much care for it anyway), and when I double-click a sound file in nautilus, it runs mplayer to play the file, but I also get an error window (from mplayer) that says "[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy" but it is playing the sound file just fine. I can close the error window and everything

Kernel statistics package availability?
Are there any good packages (or just places to look) to observe and track kernel behavior (other than to add such and build a custom kernel)? I'm doing some performance analysis on different types of i/os on different file systems, and I need far more sophisticated information than iostat or vmstat produce. Any useful suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. -- Mark Hull-Richter

MPlayer doesn't seem to work right in CentOS 5

Topic filtering on this list
Someone suggested in an earlier thread about possibly splitting this list (by release or some other topical divide), and it was suggested that people use list filters to extract the topics (release 5.0 was the one mentioned) of interest. I may have gone to the wrong place, but I did go to the mailing list subscription control page for mine, and there are no topics defined on which one may filter.

CentOS 4 won't boot on test machine
I must have really shot myself in the foot on this one. I reinstalled CentOS 4.4 (have to, for now) on my test machine, exactly the way it was before (same options anyway), but when it comes up, I get: Booting 'CentOS-4 x86_64 (2.6.9-42.ELsmp)' root(hd1,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet Error 15: File not
