Breaking a virtlockd lock?
I have several Qemu/kvm servers running VMs hosted on an NFS share, and am
using virtlockd. (lock_manager = "lockd" in qemu.conf) After a power
failure, one of the VMs will not start, claiming that it is locked. How do
I get out of this?
thanks,

Visual C++ fails to recognize changed file
We're having a problem that is the reverse of prblems that others
have had: if we have a file open in Visual C++, and change it from
another editor (either on the PC or on Unix), Visual C++ does not
notice that it has been changed and ignores the file when it does a
make. If the file is on a local drive, everything works fine.
We're running Samba version 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.6 and Visual

TKEY is unacceptable
Samba 4.1.1 using BIND_DLZ (bind-9.9.1-0.1.P2) on CentOS 6.5 x86_64.
I have two domain controllers, dc-1 and dc-2, which each have three
network interfaces. Selinux is in permissive mode, and iptables is off.
One interface on each dc is to be shut down. So, on dc-1, I do:
# nsupdate -g
update delete europa.icse.cornell.edu A 192.168.3.250

Defining environments within functions
How can I define environments within a function so that they are visible
to calls to a sub-function?
I have defined an objective function,
ProfileErr = function(params,...)
which I would like to optimize using standard routines (optim,
nlminb,....) but which contains auxiliary variables which need to be
updated along with params. No optimization routine in R that I have
found has facilities

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now
neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a
directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on,
usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is
write-protected (duh).
Here's what happened most recently:
# mount /dev/hdc /mnt
mount: block

problem with 'integrate'
Hello -
I am having a problem with the function 'integrate'. I am running R
on OSX (R 2.5.1).
I am trying to suppress the error message when 'integrate' attempts
to integrate across a parameter set giving a non-finite function
value. I'm using it in a MCMC / simulated annealing algorithm, and
it is entirely possible that some parameter sets will give non-

R and ACML
While I recently received some very helpful files and email from Kevin
Hendricks for compiling with ATLAS, thought I'd first have a stab at
ACML. Having problems, which I suspect are trivial to solve:
1. machine is running RHEL 4, meaning, it uses gcc 3.4.5 out of the box,
and g77. In my experience, over-riding RHEL's choice, and manually
upgrading to gcc 4.x.x (and, as a consequence

ATTN Development TEAM - "invalid mid from server"
Hi,
We are having a problem with smbclient running tar back to a FreeBSD

many singularly uninformative error messages, the primary error* is

Strange kernel message w/ Promise TX4
Greetings,
I am running Xen-3.0.2-3, with host OS kernel version 2.6.16.13-xen0.
The system is a AMD Athlon XP running Debian/Etch.
I have 3 SATA disks plugged into a Promise TX4 SATA controller. The
disks are RAIDed using Linux md with LVM wrapped around the md''s for
volume management.
I currently am running 3 domUs, each with LVM backed vbd''s.
This server has been up for

disk problems or false alarm??
Hi,
I run hundreds of Redhat 8.0 boxes and Fedora Core 1 boxes, both
Operation systems boxes give me some trouble reporting disk errors like
the following (collected from /var/log/messages of each linux boxes by
my own script). And a "badblocks" command on some of the related hard
drive reports that failed sectors found, while others reports no,
false-positive. Any one can give me

Thank you very much for your attention to this. You should get a medal for

I have that many subnets. As for why they don't show up: they are defined
in BIND's configuration and not samba's; they never

Building R package: make pdf & _masked_by_GlobalEnv
Hi....
I am assembling an R package (under Windows XP, R v.2.3) and have a very
basic question. Running R CMD build does not generate a pdf. R CMD check
generates a .dvi, but I cannot figure out how to automatically create the
pdf. I thought from reading the "writing r extensions' manual that R CMD
build was supposed to generate the pdf. I am having no success using

Building packages in R - 'private' functions
Hello.
I am creating an R package that I'd like to submit to CRAN (OS Windows
XP). How do I distinguish among 'public' functions, e.g., those that are
intended to be called by users of the package and for which I am providing
documentation & examples, and 'private' functions, which are used
internally by the 'public' functions, but for which I do not wish to

symbolic matrix elements...
Normally, I do symbolics in Maple, or Mathematica, but I'm trying to
write a simple script for students to handle some *very* simple
calculations (for other purposes) with matrix or vector elements, where
the elements are coded symbolically. What I've tried with *partial"
success is use of the tilde (~) operator. So, for example, consider a
simple vector:
