CentOS versus Scientific
Hey folks, I was just reminded of the Scientific distro, which on the surface appears to be quite similar to CentOS even when the developers over there are rather coy about which Enterprise Linux distro they base theirs on. I wonder if anyone here has done a comparison of the two that they'd care to share. I work in a Scientific Research Lab (Stem Cell Research) and am wondering if there is

Scientific Linux 6.0 released (based on RHEL 6.0)
I know this is the CentOS list. However, as there has been some interest in CentOS 6.0 (RHEL 6), I thought I'd share the news here. Scientific Linux 6 is based on RHEL 6 with add-ons for scientific computing. FWIW, the Admin tools etc. are pretty much the same as in RHEL, so are the base packages. URGENT! Shellshock fix DOES NOT fix the bug on CentOS 5.4
Good afternoon! After applying the latest bash RPM listed at http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2014-September/020594.html : The fixed RPM (bash-3.2-33.el5_10.4.x86_64.rpm) DOES work just fine on CentOS 5.10. However, it DOES NOT work on CentOS 5.4. That is, bash runs fine, but IS STILL VULNERABLE TO SHELLSHOCK! Scary screenie at: http://i.imgur.com/yR7sBjV.png It looks like

CentOS and SL, together?
From: Lamar Owen <lowen at pari.edu> > Referencing SL3 and CentOS 3 (as I haven't run SL4 as yet) there were some > scientific applications and some Java stuff, eclipse for one, You do understand the redistribution issues with Java, correct? It's a Sun problem (a typical thorn for Red Hat in general), not a Red Hat one. > part of cluster suite for another, included. >

[PATCH] builder: run/schedule a SELinux relabel if needed
If the guest uses SELinux, then make sure to run a relabel (or at least schedule one) after the image build: this way the template is relabelled, or at least it will do that at the next boot, without the need for the user to ask for a relabel. This just covers the case of building a new image with no additional operations on it though. --- builder/website/centos.sh | 2 ++

centos vs rhel vs scientific linux
i'm prepping to teach a 5-day intro class in linux starting in about 3 hours, and the courseware is clearly designed around RHEL (apparently 5.1). but since i'm not being provided with RHEL DVDs, i'm just going to hand everyone a centos 5.4 DVD and take it from there. as part of the intro, i want to briefly discuss the varieties of linux related to RHEL, so obviously i want to

EL 6 rollout strategies? (Scientific Linux)
I was wondering what feedback might be offered by the CentOS community on their experiences using Scientific Linux? I'm a long-time Centos user, and am basically happy with CentOS. I understand there are delays getting EL 6 out. We have been long anxious to roll out EL 6 as soon as it's ready, but our time window for rollout is looming and we will need to act. Door not hitting me on my way out
Sorry, folks. I wish our release developers well, and hope that they can open up their processes to allow much needed community involvment. But I've hopped to Scientific Linux and find it much more usable due to their willingness to publish updates even without the entire new release bundled, and the much timelier updates from the upstream vendor. php53 and bind97 are directly available for

building llvm_Rel400 on Scientific Linux (RHEL) 7.3 x86_64
Hi, I am trying to build the LLVM suite on a RedHat Enterprise Linux clone (Scientific Linux <https://www.scientificlinux.org/>). In the latest attempt, the build seems to complete without any explicit failures but the `check-all` process fails. Any ideas about what is wrong or suggestions for how to proceed would be much appreciated. This is the current procedure: sudo yum install

Scientific Linux
Greetings! I have just signed up to r-sig-fedora because I have installed Scientific Linux 6.2 (my first Red Hat based Linux since over 10 years ago ... ). I'm trying this for basically 2 reasons: first, I expect CERN and FermiLab should do a good job of maintaining their distribution, and in particular to take care of its compatibility with scientific software; second, because it still has

Re: Kernel panic with virt-builder etc.
I've just built libguestfs (from git) on Ubuntu 13.10 and it worked for me. Here's what I did: * Clone libguestfs from git: git clone https://github.com/libguestfs/libguestfs.git cd libguestfs * Create a file called 'localconfigure' containing: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- . localenv ./autogen.sh \ --prefix /usr \ --libdir /usr/lib

vm ignores kickstart
Hi, I''m trying to use a kickstart file to install VMs on a Scientific Linux 5.2 (repackaged RHEL52) host, but the install process seems to ignore my kickstart file. The command I''m using is: virt-install -n sl4vm01 --ram=1024 --vcpus=1 --os-type=linux --os-variant=rhel4 --extra-args="ks=http://particle.phys.uvic.ca/~fransham/ks.cfg" --paravirt --nographics
