Forbidden: can't access *.html files in /var/www/html
Hello,
I'm using the latest CentOS with phpBB 3.0.x + postgreSQL + sendmail
(relayed through gmail.com) - all those programs working fine,
with no big modifications of the CentOS defaults (i.e. SELinux is on).
Now I'm struggling with the seemingly simple problem, that when
I put an .html file into /var/www/html/ then Apache won't serve it.
In the browser I see:

Best configuration for /var/www/html/
For a long period of time, my Apache root directory has been
/home/httpd. For security reasons, this is not so good as
SELinux has informed me. Now all of the files have been copied
to /var/www/etc with owner and group "root". The privileges are
754 (rwxr-xr--), however apache does not have access to them.
Should the owner be apache? Group?

Re: Message: "HTML rendering is currently disabled"
I noticed this thread hasn't been updated in almost a year but I'm experiencing a similar problem. I'm running wine on os x and my wine-gecko directories look like this:

if you install cgi programs from rpm, how to configure for actual use in /var/www/html ?
In Centos 5.5, I've had this same experience over and over. I have no
trouble installing CGI programs the old fashioned way (untar into
/var/www/html and configure), but don't like un-rpm managed files
floating about. So I can install, for example, phpMyAdmin, from EPEL.
That phpMyAdmin RPM drops files into a bunch of locations, the php
files are under /usr/share/phpMysql

I need some help with Dovecot-1.0rc2 on Gentoo Linux. My test harness is one

from an old UW-IMAP/sendmail combo running on RHL 8.
Config is intended to be passwd/pam, plaintext login allowed (until I migrate

puppet kick and "Could not set 'file on ensure: Is a directory - /var/lib/puppet/facts"
Hello puppet world,
I''m sure this is probably an easy fix, but I cannot seem to resolve this
issue. The puppetmaster starts correctly and so does the puppet agent,
which receives the update correctly if I restart the puppet agent
service manually or during the timed updates; however, if I perform an
"puppet kick", it just fails with the following error:

My /etc/group is not quite in order (a long story), and now I need to
correct privileges right here and there.
I would ask someone who has amavisd-new to show me the corresponding

building with SSL support in non-std directories
I'm trying to get configure to find the right libs/includes to build with SSL support (openssl), but it just seems to refuse!
I tried passing " --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/usr/local/ssl ", but this didn't seem to help.
In /usr/local/ssl is:

Setting Group owner of files on USB drive
I just got a 8Gb flash drive and went to copy a bunch of files onto it.
I wanted to perserve everything, so I just took my archiving rsync
command and altered it to go to localhost:/media/RALLY2/ (name of flash
drive). I am getting errors with changing the group owner. Huh?
So I try to just use mkdir to create a directory on the flash drive.
The directory has a group of root ???

chmod / chown settings on /var/www/html
I'm setting up a new CentOS 4.4 server to work with Fruity (a frontend
program that operates Nagios). For security purposes, what chmod and chown
settings do you put on the /var/www/html folders?
Also, can anyone recommend any good LAMP hardening guides? While I'm not
planning on putting this into production, I'd like to cover all my bases
before that's an issue.
