Install Samba4 as File Server
Hi I intend to install Samba 4 as a file server on Debian 10 with apt-get. I understood it, I don't need to install the OS dependencies ( https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Package_Dependencies_Required_to_Build_Samba#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu), because I will use the distribution repository. This way, do I need only packages below? # apt-get install acl attr samba samba-dsdb-modules

List of Dependencies in Samba wiki
Hello. Due that bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1573221) it is needed to install winbind to make domain controller work. But winbind package is absent in dependencies list ( https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_Dependencies#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu) for Debian/Ubuntu. Smbclient is not needed for domain provision, but used for testing of installed domain controller here

post make install, sudo service samba start ->service not recognized?
Hi, I've successfully compiled 4.2.1, done make install, and run testparm as well as smbd -b to check the build. Looks good. So now how do I start the service? If I just do [sudo service samba start] I get "Service not recognized"? Thank you, Caesar. P.S. for LinuxMint 17 Rebecca, here's the ./configure command sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc

Building on debian 8.6
Hi, Despite having used samba for many, many years, I have not built from source on Debian before. CentOS, yes.. Raspbian, yes.. but not Debian itself. I have installed Debian 8.6 from scratch: newserver:~/download/samba-4.5.2$ cat /etc/debian_version 8.6 user at newserver:~/download/samba-4.5.2$ uname -a Linux newserver 3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 (2016-10-19) i686 GNU/Linux

[RFC] aptitude & BTRFS slowness
Hi all, I suffered a lot for the terrific performance of aptitude on a BTRFS filesystem. I don''t think that BTRFS is a slow filesystem, but it seems that some aptitude (or dpkg) patterns are capable to highlight the btrfs slowness in some corner case. In order to alleviate this problem, I wrote a small script which calls aptitude with the LD_PRELOAD libeatmyadata library. And now I

Samba printserver works for Win10 Pro but not Win10 Home edition
Thanks Marc, I can see your point. The Samba version we used, is 4.3.11-Ubuntu. I have not found any newer package for Ubuntu. We have found no other way to upgrade this, than to download 4.6.3, then make, make install and .configure. We have followed this guide: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Package_Dependencies_Required_to_Build_Samba#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu. Anyway, it states "Please

Aptitude vs. apt
Hi all, I need to write an aptitude provider for Debian. How should it differ from apt? Can I just s/apt/aptitude/g, or do I need to do something else? Any other weird behaviours I should look for or whatever? I''ll make it a subclass of apt (and since Deb seems to specify aptitude as the default now, maybe apt should subclass aptitude), so any dpkg answerfile work should work on

Package resource changes
What with the impending release and a now fixed bug nagging me, I''m testing puppet [2556] from subversion. There have been changes in packages, I used to have Package { provider => "aptitude", } in my default.pp, but that doesn''t work anymore, and changing package to type or removing the declaration doesn''t help. How do package providers work now?

CRAN-only "Hash Sum mismatch"
summary: updating R .deb's from recommended mirrors @ http://cran.r-project.org/mirrors.html has allowed me to keep my R version up-to-date for many months. But since Friday (25 Jan) I get errors like Failed to fetch <mirror URI/>/squeeze-cran/<deb name/>: Hash Sum mismatch but can install .deb's from non-CRAN sources. No fix from sudo rm /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin sudo

Howto uninstall compiz from Kubuntu
Compiz: A colleague tempted me with compiz eye candy, and I tried it. Sorry, but many features were too far outside my usability comfort zone: - lazy mouse (in /this/ day and age???) - The Run window did not reliably pop up - minimize-all-windows turned everything black Some of those items were configurable. Some required multiple, diverse reconfigurations to fix. I couldn't fix the

Samba4 smb.conf questions
I am trying to find a good guide for setting up the smb.conf and can't seem to find anything. Here's what I have been trying to do and it hasn't been working correctly. We had a Windows Server 2003 DC. I had to upgrade it because of some problems we were having and upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2. After that, my Samba 3 with Winbind file server quit authenticating to the AD
