New parser-based Markdown implementation for Java
Markdowners,
just a short heads-up to a newly released Markdown implementation:
"pegdown" (http://github.com/sirthias/pegdown) implements a Java Markdown-to-HTML processor based on a PEG parser with the grammar being based on John MacFarlanes C implementation "peg-markdown".
pegdown uses "parboiled" (http://www.parboiled.org) for the actual parsing work and, as

anchor names from headers (Setext and atx)?
It would be useful if defining headers (either Setext and atx style), if
Markdown would also generate corresponding anchors:
## This is an H2 ##
would create:
<a name="This is an H2"/>
<h2>This is an H2</h2>
Or something like that.
Or is that available some different way?
Thanks,

Make.text
I've written a bookmarklet, Make.text, for turning a web page into Markdown syntax.
It works in Firefox 1.5 (Linux and Mac), Safari 2 (Mac), Konqueror 3.5 (Linux), and Opera 9 (Linux and Mac).
It does not work in Internet Explorer (and I don?t have a Windows machine to debug it on).
You can get it here: http://homepage.mac.com/tjim/

Doubt about standard syntax
I have a doubt about the standard syntax (actually, it's the only test
that maruku doesn't pass yet).
Lists MUST be preceded by an empty line?
So the following are only 4 paragraphs, without list items, right?
-----------
Paragraph and no space:
* ciao
Paragraph and 1 space:
* ciao
Paragraph and 3 spaces:

Paragraph and 4 spaces:

Make --html4tags the default?
Seeing how no-one should send application/xhtml+xml to the browser
[1], and development of the HTML standard is again happening [2], it
would make sense to have Markdown.pl default to HTML tags.
Maybe too late to change a default though.
How does PHP Markdown and other implementations deal with this issue?

Detab should be multi-byte aware?
A user has table-formatted data which contains accents and finds it
problematic that his tables misalign after going through Markdown.
This is because he made them align using tab characters and Markdown
will convert these to spaces even in pre-formatted text and Markdown
is not multi-byte aware.
This raises two questions:
1. Should Markdown convert tabs to spaces in pre-formated text?

Markdown 1.0.2b4 Performance Drop
I was recently made aware of the the Markdown 1.0.2 beta 4 and
naturally downloaded it in great anticipation, as I am a big fan of
Markdown :)
Though I did notice a significant performance drop: The TextMate
manual is 3,000 lines (173 KB) and previously took 4-5 seconds to
convert to HTML (measuring only time spent by `Markdown.pl`.) With
the new version this has increased to almost 30

Feature Request External label resolution
One of the things I'm coming up against. Maintaining a non-small
web site with many internal links is a pain.
Consider:
Suppose that at one point I have

Business
Home
...
Later the site gets more complex, and Images has a bunch of sub
directories.

header_rotate
inventory_pix

Formal Grammar — some thoughts
I recently subscribed and saw in the archive that Eric Astor was
asking for a formal grammar (unlikely the first time for such request.)
Currently there are a few problems in making such a thing so I was
curious if Mr. Gruber has made any thoughts about moving toward one?
This would also allow a more ?clean? parser which would get rid of
some of the current problems (bad nesting[^1],

using markdown in a forum?
Hi,
Is markdown a good language to use in a web forum application? How does
it compare to bbcode in features and ease-of-use for non-technical
users?
I'm thinking of using jquery-markedit in that forum app.
Thanks,

Revisiting mime-types and file extensions
Hi,
I'm in the process of adding support for Markdown to a minimal CMS in
Rails, [Railfrog][railfrog], which uses mime types to select appropriate
processing. I have had a look through the archives but have not been
able to see that a consensus has emerged as to what such a mime type for
Markdown should look like. My reading of the RFCs suggests that it
should be within the "text/*"

Extra markdown suggestions
Hello List,
I have recently started using Michel Fortin's PHP "Markdown Extra"
implementation to programmatically transform my markdown text files into
HTML. Firstly I'd like to say markdown is very cool -- thanks to everyone
involved :)
I'd also like to suggest two additions to markdown:
1) I very often use /this/ markdown to indicate emphasis since I find it
much

TextMate File Type Detection for RSpec & Rails
For those of you struggling with TextMate not properly detecting
rspec files, Allan Odgaard (the author of TextMate) has kindly
provided a tutorial on how to set up TextMate to associate all .rb
files with rails and all _spec.rb files with rspec.

His instructions work great and switching between rspec and rails

TextMate: syncPEOPLE on Rails Bundle Becomes Built-in Rails Bundle
It?s official, folks!
After talking with my partner, Greg Narain, as well as Allan Odgaard,
the creator of TextMate, we (syncPEOPLE) have decided to release our
Rails bundle under the MIT license so that it can nest itself nicely
within its new home, the TextMate Subversion Bundle Repository.
What this means for the rest of us is that all of these great
features we?ve been madly

innerHTML and scripts not running
Hello,
I''m having an issue with getting embedded javascript code to actually
run when loaded via an Ajax.Request() call and the callback function
inserts the generated HTML and js code to my current page. It seems
that the javascript code is not properly parsing.
For example, I''m using the following function showinfo() to return
some html code.
function showInfo(go_url){

rendering Markdown automatically
I made this thing. Some of you may find it useful.
https://github.com/skurfer/RenderMarkdown
I'm using it for documentation at work. It could also be handy if you run Apache on your desktop machine and want to share files (for display purposes only) that way.

Announcement: Markdown-0.2 for PmWiki
Announcing a new release of the PmWiki Markdown extension.[1] This
release introduces an improvement in page rendering, examples of
syntax,[2] and better support for Atx (up from none). I have also
established a page to help keep interested parties informed of
changes, to include a discussion group.[3] There are still problems
with loose lists and blockquotes, but this is a 0.2 release. The

The following page treats the headings differently to the start of the

PHP Markdown 1.0.1h & Extra 1.1.4
This update to PHP Markdown fix a bug that slipped in the WordPress
interface with the last update. It also introduce a new "feature":
you can now instruct the parser to ignore HTML tags and/or entities
in the input. You can do this by instantiating yourself the parser
and setting the `no_markup` or `no_entities` properties to true:
$parser = new Markdown_Parser;
