UC Cemtos 7 : Systemd alternatives ?
Wasn't there a TV series in the 1960s about a US soldier who got made up to general thanks to the accidental over punching of paper tape? Cemtos 7 : Systemd alternatives ?
Reading about systemd, it seems it is not well liked and reminiscent of Microsoft's "put everything into the Windows Registry" (Win 95 onwards). Is there a practical alternative to omnipresent, or invasive, systemd ? -- Regards, Paul. England, EU. Centos, Exim, Apache, Libre Office. Linux is the future. Micro$oft is the past.

Re: OT: fax obsoleted? Was: Re: Fax via email (Steve Underwood)
Old managers will change its the LaLawyershat don't change. Every dam law office that I been in has at least one fax machine that is constantly printing something out. But to say fax is dead is an understatement. AT&T said that about teletype service, you know 50 - 300 baud service, years ago and then one day they noticed that traffic across their teletype seservicetarted growing. If

Re: OT: Legacy systems / fax
Around 1978, when I was consulting to a multinational company in the business of agriculture, I witnessed this configuration in their communications center in NYC: A paper tape punch attached to a teletype machine was busily punching out a tape that was being spewed into a wastebasket. Somehow, running behind it by several feet of tape, was a paper tape reader on another teletype drawing

R-beta: R without graphics
Is there a way to "unplug" the windows graphics from R, so that it will work across a teletype telnet session or in a Linux box proving resistant to having windows added to it? wxruby-swig 0.0.13 is up
This fixes the wxRED Mac link error. Thanks to Nick for pointing out that I hadn''t removed some wxRED code related to an earlier experiment. Hopefully this one will build on Mac, end-to-end. I also found and fixed a problem that was causing the crash on exit: wxWindows automatically deletes the C++ app object as soon as the last frame is closed. Later, when ruby garbage collected the

Pathfinder Office 2.70 install- Regedit case sensitive?
Due to a number of issues (including needing to run some specialized DOS software in our lab as well as recent stuff), we have decided to check out the possibility of going to Linux in our lab. I've been testing Linux and Wine. So far, I've found Linux Fedora 10 to be the best for my old (2002 or so) laptop, and I've been trying to get Trimble Pathfinder Office 2.70 running with Wine

R GUI API: suggestion for R function to put in there?
Well, following a discussion with Duncan Murdoch, where he suggests me to rewrite my requests, here it is. Just a couple of problems I found difficult to solve, as a writer of R GUIs, and for which I would be very happy to get a R function (plus rationates): - To know if an evaluation returns invisibly or not. This is discussed in a previous thread. We now have withVisible(). - To know if

Anonymous SIP calls
James, I'm a systems and telecom professional with experience going back more than thirty years, to the days of teletype, current loop, POTS (2600hz signalling anyone?) and echo cancellation via analog level control and hybrid balance. Your read of the intent of the VOIP/SIP design correctly. The intent WAS to make making connections between endpoints as easy as using a browser.

Opteron + Nvidia + Centos 4.2 i386 = Thud
Dear All, Just returned from vacation and was delighted to see that Centos 4.2 is now on the mirrors. Unfortunately the new i386 version is giving us problems on our dual Opteron workstations with Nvidia graphics cards... Basically, nine times out of ten, the boxes will hang when they try to re-load X... and just sit there with the keyboards Caps and Scroll lock LED's flashing. The only
