Backtick Hickup
I'm using Michel Fortin's MDTest cases to rewrite my html2text.php script.
Just now I stumbled upon this bug (in PHP Markdown at least):
# Input:
Backtick: ``\```
# Output:
<p>Backtick: `````</p>
# Should-Be Output:
<p>Backtick: <code>`</code></p>
If you (Michel) are already aware of this, just ignore me ;-)

[Bug] Codeblock in _second_ line
Take the following input and both `Markdown.pl` and PHP Markdown will fail:
~~~Input~~~~~~
Codeblock
~~~End~~~~~~~
~~~Expected~~~~
<pre><code>
Codeblock</pre></code>
~~~End~~~~~~~
~~~Actual Result~~
<p>Codeblock</p>
~~~End~~~~~~~~
There is already a testcase in MDTest for codeblocks in the first line, though
the above is still not handled properly!

[Bug] PHP Markdown (Extra) generates invalid HTML for code blocks
PHP Markdown v 1.0.1i and PHP Markdown Extra v 1.1.5 generate invalid HTML for
code blocks
Take this input:
paragraph
codeblock
Markdown will generate:
<p>paragraph</p>
<pre><code>codeblock
</pre></code>
Notice the wrong position of the closing code tag.

MDTest 1.0
I'm announcing today a new testsuite application for Markdown called
MDTest. I've been using it as a replacement for John's Markdown Test
for some time now I think it's ready for release.
First, I want to say Markdown Test has been very useful in developing
PHP Markdown. The testsuite covers many cases, however I still found
the need to add other tests for PHP Markdown, to

my scala markdown implementation
Hi,
I have written my own implementation of markdown in Scala. I only later
realized there is already one
( <http://tristanhunt.com/projects/knockoff/> ), but I put quite some
work into mine and I think it is never bad to have alternatives, so I
wanted to release it anyway. I want to use the same BSD License as the
original markdown, but before I put it out into the wild I wanted to ask

unwanted paragraph (syntax edge-case)
Hi list!
Take this markdown input:
* asdf
* asdf
* asdf
asdf
What I want:
<ul>
<li>asdf
<ul>
<li>asdf</li>
<li>asdf</li>
</ul>
<p>asdf</p></li>
</ul>
But markdown puts the first asdf into a paragraph. There is nothing I can do

Make --html4tags the default?
Seeing how no-one should send application/xhtml+xml to the browser
[1], and development of the HTML standard is again happening [2], it
would make sense to have Markdown.pl default to HTML tags.
Maybe too late to change a default though.
How does PHP Markdown and other implementations deal with this issue?

html2text in php
Hi there!
I recently ported Aaron Swartz' html2text.py to PHP and would like to know
what you think about it.
Any suggestions and bug reports are much appreciated.
Check it out: http://milianw.de/projects/html2text/
Note: Michel Fortins PHP Markdown Extended is supported (that is: tables and
definitionlist are supported in some way)
There are still some bugs but I hope to sort them out

spelling with <g>?
Hello,
What should the following input produce?
Dutch has shifted Germanic g to the velar fricatives [?] and [x], but
retained the spelling with <g> and thus at least a visual similarity
to German; English and Frisian have shifted g to [j] before palatal
vowels
The Dingus says:
<p>Dutch has shifted Germanic g to the velar fricatives [?] and [x],
but retained the spelling

First Markdownify Beta released
Hi folks!
I finally released the first Beta of Markdownify - the HTML to Markdown
converter for PHP. It is the successor to the old `html2text.php` and is much
more stable. It's pretty much a complete rewrite and supports all Markdown
and PHP Markdown Extra syntax features.
It's beta since I still have to add a word wrapping feature and "Markdown
inside block elements" is

a JavaScript front-end for Babelmark
Hi,
I've built a quick-and-dirty diff GUI for Babelmark (thanks,
Michel!). You can get it as a bookmarklet here:
http://attacklab.net/babelmark/
If either Michel or Tom is interested in hosting this, I'll be happy
to do the grunt work for a real integration. It's kind of pain in the
ass to hit the bookmarklet every time you get new data from the server.
I've tested this

parsing question - lists and blockquotes
I'm using the PHP port of Markdown, but I noticed the same effect on
your dingus <http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/dingus>
The problem I'm seeing is when I have an bulleted list and the last item
of the list contains a block quote. The blockquote does not terminate
correctly, and adding another blockquote after the list ends up
extending the original blockquote.

PHP Dingus Fix
I just realised I hadn't updated the version of PHP Markdown and
Extra on the dingus as I pretended I did in my two announcements. It
is now fixed: PHP Markdown 1.0.2b7 and PHP Markdown Extra 1.1b1 can
now be tested on the dingus.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

anchor names from headers (Setext and atx)?
It would be useful if defining headers (either Setext and atx style), if
Markdown would also generate corresponding anchors:
## This is an H2 ##
would create:
<a name="This is an H2"/>
<h2>This is an H2</h2>
Or something like that.
Or is that available some different way?
Thanks,

Trouble with parentheses in Markdown hyperlinks
How can we improve URL detection in Markdown? I posted a question on Stack
Overflow and happened to click a URL in my post. To my surprise, it wasn't
functional, and it took three different, nonintuitive manipulations before
I achieved a functional URL. Stack Overflow says "not my problem", so I'm
deferring to Markdown itself.

Babelmark
I'm currently attempting to write a spec for parsing Markdown Extra,
and since one goal is to minimize the differences in output between
implementations, I've made a tool allowing me to compare who does what
for any given input. I hope this can also facilitate future
discussions about the syntax.
So here's Babelmark, a testbed for various Markdown implementations

PHP Markdown 1.0.2b7
This is a new release for PHP Markdown, following Markdown.pl 1.0.2b7
from a few weeks ago. It fix the same bugs, and some more; it also
introduce more radical backend changes. It can be downloaded here:
<http://www.michelf.com/docs/projets/php-markdown-1.0.2b7.zip>
and you can test it on the PHP Markdown Dingus:

Newline before </code></pre>
Hello!
What's the point in adding a newline before the closing tags of a preformatted
code block? Example:
This is Code
Will become:
<pre><code>This is Code
</code></pre>
(In both PHP and Perl Markdown)
I don't really see the point, especially because this is not what I would want
to see. With a normal stylesheet which has white-space:pre; set on

Benchmarks with TextMate's manual
The following benchmarks have been obtained using the TextMate manual
as the input source:
<http://macromates.com/textmate/manual/source.tbz>
Using PHP Markdown, parsing the 24 files separately (with the
reference file appended to each of them), I get this (on an iBook G4
1.2 Ghz):
