Libvirt with multipath devices and/or FC on NPIV
Hello,
I am trying to find out a best practice for a specific scenario.
First of all I would like to know what is the proper way to set up
multipath, who should care about it the host or the guest. Right now I have
a setup where I have one multipath which sets my host to boot from FC SAN. I
have another multipathed LUN in the host which is essentially a dm which I
attached to a guest, however

device-mapper multipath
I am attempting to get multipath working with device-mapper (CentOS
4.2 and 4.3). It works on EVERY install of mine from RH (also v4.2,
4.3), but the same multipath.conf imported to all my installs of
CentOS do not work. Note that I have tested a working 4.2
configuration file from RH on CentOS 4.2 and a working 4.3
configuration (it changed slightly) on CentOS 4.3. Neither worked. Our

NPIV & SAN Controller Failover
I apologize if this is a little off-topic, but it does relate to Xen and using NPIV on Xen, so I think this is an appropriate forum for the question. I''ve recently begun using NPIV for a couple of Xen PV domUs rather than traditional disk passthrough. My reasons are primarily for performance - I''m hoping that NPIV has lower overhead and lower reliance on the resources of dom0

multipath using defaults rather than multipath.conf contents for some devices (?) - why ?
hi all
We have a rh linux server connected to two HP SAN controllers, one an HSV200 (on the way out),
the other an HSV400 (on the way in). (Via a Qlogic HBA).
/etc/multipath.conf contains this :
device

product "HSV1[01]1|HSV2[01]0|HSV300|HSV4[05]0"

npiv VS Xen 3.3
Hello all,
I''m doing some testing with Xen and NPIV disk on the platform SLES 10 SP2 and SLES 11 (xen 3.3). On SLES 10 sp2, I have not encountered major problems during the tests (exept with live migration). I was able to attach a disk with the command "xm block-attach npiv:..." an I am also able to start a VM using a bootable NPIV disk.
On sles11, after changing the script

Resize NPIV Block Device
I''m using Xen with SLES10 and am using NPIV to attach FC SAN disks to my
domUs. I''ve resize one of the disks on my SAN and I''m wondering if
there''s a way to force Xen to rescan/resize the block device without
shutting down the domU or unmounting the volume.
Thanks,
Nick

SCSI block device name/multipath question
hi,
i have a host with a LSI SAS 3108 RAID controller in JBOD mode with 4
SSD SATA disks. i installed oVirt node (= CentOS 7) on the first two
disks configured as SW RAID 1 (in the oVirt node/CentOS installer). when
i look at the device names in the running OS i get
# lsscsi --scsi_id -g

SUMMARY : multipath using defaults rather than multipath.conf contents for some devices (?) - why ?
The reason for the behaviour observed below turned out to be that the
device entry in /etc/multipath.conf was inadvertently appended *after* the devices
section , rather than inside it - so that we had
#devices {
# device {
# blah blah
# } (file has a bunch of defaults commented out)
# etc
#}

Re: attaching storage pool error
Hi again!
Need to add here, since I been investigating a bit further, that it seems to be possible to add an NPIV vhba to the guest, using vdsm hooks. I've seen the reference to "host device assignments", which Dan pointed me too, but I didn't really understand the meaning of it at that moment.
It would be interesting to hear from someone that have been doing it, how it would

Hi, John, and thank you!
This was a very thorough and welcome response, I was wondering where all the storage guys were...
I will get back to you with more details later, specifically about multipath, since this needs to be investigated thoroughly.
I have, with trial and error method, during the elapsed time, been able to attach the NPIV pool LUN to a virtio-scsi controller, and it seems it

Adding handling for Multipath storage devices
The following patches introduce support for multipath and cciss devices to the ovirt-node and node-image. Comments are appreciated.
These patches assume that the 3 patches (2 node, 1 node-image) from Joey are all incorporated.

Ang: Ang: Re: Ang: Ang: Re: Ang: Re: attaching storage pool error
Hi!
Report from my multipath tests today.
My test virtual machine, that runs from an NPIV pool, is not able to use multipath.
When I pulled the cable from one of the targets, it crashed.
But, strangely, it could boot up again on that other path, that it just crashed on.
That tells me it can use both paths, and is not limited to one of them only, but because the multipath layer isn't

I saw this last week while I was at KVM Forum, but just haven't had the
time until now to start thinking about this stuff again ... as you point
out with your questions and replies - NPIV/vHBA is tricky and
complicated... I always have try to "clear the decks" of anything else

HBA port
Hi,
I have a host which is connected to SAN via single Fibre channel HBA
(qlogic). I have several LUNS assigned to this (sdc, sdd). I added
another single port HBA to this host. I can now see two world wide
names.
Now the confusion is which world wide name does sdc and sdd is/was using.
scsi_id -g -u -s /block/sdc only gives wwid but I need the wwn for sdc and sdd.
Thanks
Paras.

kernel: blk_cloned_rq_check_limits: over max segments limit., Device Mapper Multipath, iBFT, iSCSI COMSTAR
Hi,
WARNING: Long post ahead
I have an issue when starting multipathd. The kernel complains about "blk_cloned_rq_check_limits:
over max segments limit".
The server in question is configured for KVM hosting. It boots via iBFT to an iSCSI volume. Target
is COMSTAR and underlying that is a ZFS volume (100GB). The server also has two infiniband cards
providing four (4) more paths over SRP

NPIV storage pools do not map to same LUN units across hosts.

There is a NPIV storage pool defined on two hosts and pool contains a

NPIV setup?
I'm missing something.
The purpose of NPIV (as I understand it) is to give a guest OS an HBA that
it can scan, play with new luns, etc all without making changes to the
physical server(s) the guest is living in currently.
However, I can't find a way to either have the guest's XML config create
the HBA or for the physical server to successfully GIVE the HBA to the
guest. I can give

Doc v2: How to use NPIV in libvirt
Thanks for John Ferlan's lots of internal feedbacks, I believe it's more
readable, and better orgnized now. Should we create a page for it
under http://libvirt.org/deployment.html or add it in WIKI?

klibc linked tools developpement env
Hello,
I maintain the multipath tools, some of which are intended to be packed into
early userspace. I had to drop a klibc tree into the tools archive for that,
like GregKH does for udev. I don't like it, because tarballs are bigger than
they should be and it brings more maintenance.
Recently, scsi_id became a required multipath dependency. scsi_id is currently
build with glibc and I need a

Multipath-root (mpath) problems with CentOS 5
Hi list!
I have a server with dual port Qlogic iSCSI HBA. I set up the same LUN for
both ports, and boot the CentOS installer with "linux mpath".
Installer detects multipathing fine, and creates mpath0 device for root disk.
Installation goes fine, and the system boots up and works fine after the
install from the multipath root device.
After install the setup is like this:
