(PR#11231) [Solaris 9 segfault when closiing X11()]
We need to know a great deal more information, and asking on R-devel would be a lot kinder than blaming this on a bug in R (and please use a meaningful subject line). What version of R is this? Precisely what OS (Solaris 9 comes for several architectures)? Assuming you compiled R yourself, what compilers did you use? (And where did you get those from if they are not Sun compilers?) If got a

Performance problem
Dear all, I have a performance problem in terms of computing time. I estimate mixed models on a fairly large number of subgroups (10000) using lme(.) within the by(.) function and it takes hours to do the calculation on a fast notebook under Windows. I suspect by(.) to be a poor implementation for doing individual analysis on subgroups. Is there an alternative and more efficient way for doing

/etc/printcap
Hi, following situation: 1) You create a raw printer (called "testprinter") under cups and leave the description-field (info-field) empty. cups will create an entry in /etc/printcap of the form testprinter|testprinter:rm=linux100:rp=testprinter: 2) You start samba with a standard [printers] and [print$] share. samba will expose the printqueue to the clients. 3) You upload a windows

Before I receive a barrage of 'try looking in the help file' messages, I have and to no avail. For a new user of R I would like to point out that in order to be able to use the help files/manuals effectively one must know the correct question and that only comes with using R! Could someone please direct me to why I keep getting the following error message "Error: subscript out of

Final comment from a newbie_and another
I wholeheartedly agree. Maybe in time the list will divide into two whereby 'apparantly' simple questions will be answered without a curt rebuke! I too am now signing off the list and will bury my head in a manual ot two. As a last comment; everyone has to start the learning process somewhere and lets face it, with a deadline looming and what appears to be an insurmaountable question

Contingency tables as data frames
{again a message that was sent to owner-r-help (which is me, currently) why on earth ???!??!? reply to R-help or the original sender Brett Presnell; } I'm teaching a categorical data analysis course this term, and a minor "problem" has resurfaced that I have often thought about before. This applies equally to Splus I suppose, but my undergrads aren't using Splus. It
