Licensing concerns in porting S-Plus code to R libraries
I used S-Plus for many years, and developed lots of code for my research.
When I switched to R a few years ago, I ported most of my S-Plus code over
to R for my own use. Now that some of this code is quite polished, I would
like to make it available as an R package on CRAN.
Some of my S-Plus code, however, was based on Insightful S-Plus functions;
for instance, I took a Trellis function, and

Splus-specific entries in pkg/DESCRIPTION files
In the past few years we have been working on making
it possible to use packages in both R and Spotfire S+
(previously officially called S-PLUS). One problem was
that certain lines in the DESCRIPTION file of a package
needed to be specific to R or Spotfire S+. E.g., if
your package used the xyplot() function then the package
would depend upon lattice in R and trellis in Spotfire S+,
or a package

do_fileinfo / file.info test for file IS directory during package load pointlessly stresses NIS by getting username / group info
*Summary:
*
During package loading the library function calls file.info to determine if
a file is a directory. This uselessly invokes getpwuid and getgrgid which
can be expensive if the user/group database are held on a network.
Note that file_test ALSO uses file.info for the same purpose
Suggest rebuilding file_test to use ‘stat’ based call for directory search,
and using file_test in

Re: Thanks Frank, setting graph parameters, and why social scientists don't use R
There are answers that could and should be applied in specific
situations. At least in academia and in substantial research teams,
statisticians ought to have a prominent part in many of the research
teams. Senior statisticians should have a prominent role in deciding
the teams to which this applies. why should it be ok to do combine
high levels of chemical expertise with truly appalling

Getting to the stage where I can use 'summary()' is the problem- the error
stalls the process before a
