R CMD check: Sys.getenv("R_GSCMD") cannot contain full pathname (contrary to docs)
Hi, in help("R_GSCMD") it says "R_GSCMD: Optional. The path to Ghostscript, used by dev2bitmap, bitmap and embedFonts. Consulted when those functions are invoked.". However, if 'R_GSCMD' contains a full pathname to the Ghostscript executable (as above "path" indicates), e.g. > Sys.getenv("R_GSCMD") [1] "C:\\Program

Bug in tools::compactPDF() in 2.13-0-alpha
Dear List, There seems to be an bug in compactPDF() or at least an inconsistency with the documented behaviour. The documentations states: Details: This by default makes use of ?qpdf?, available from <URL: http://qpdf.sourceforge.net/>, including a Windows binary. If ?gs_cmd? is non-empty, GhostScript is used. I don't have qpdf on my system so planned to use

How to point R toward Ghostscript on a Windows XP system
A colleague designed a script for a bar plot, which I'd like to export to my directory via the barplot command: bitmap(file="barplot.tif", type="tifflzw", height=4, width=6.5, res=1250) Unfortunately, this command produces the following error message: Error in system(paste(gsexe, "-help"), intern = TRUE, invisible = TRUE) : 'gswin32c.exe' not found

vignettes: problems with PDF compaction
[Env: OS: Win Xp; R 2.15.2; IDE: eclipse/StatET] Each time I update my heplots package, I get warnings from R CMD check on R-Forge, * checking sizes of PDF files under ?inst/doc? ... WARNING ?gs+qpdf? made some significant size reductions: compacted ?HE-examples.pdf? from 739Kb to 366Kb and upon submission to CRAN, a message from maintainers: On CRAN now: but again there were warnings

New S3 methods for optional package
Hi, I have asked this question before, but the solution I ended up with (see below) creates a note when running R CMD check. So I am trying again... I am developing a package B that, among other things, also offers some extra S3-methods for functions in package A if the user has installed A. I do not want to list A under Depends of B, as the dependency list of A is rather long, and most

Failure to get compactPDF to compact a pdf file
I am failing to get compactPDF to make any change to a pdf file that, a/c to the message from the CRAN upload site, can be very substantially compacted. Any ideas what may be wrong? I have also tried recreating the pdf file. I also tried R CMD build --resave-data --compact-vignettes DAAG The data files compact alright (but I get the 'significantly better compression' warning message

Problem with R_registerRoutines
Thanks a lot for your answer Jeroen! I should have mentioned that I had actually only checked with the win-builder, as I did not have R-devel installed on my computer. But based on your answer I installed R-devel locally on a Linux-server (Redhat), and the package could be checked without the NOTE. So you might be right that this is a windows issue. However, another package that I am maintaining

Cannot change location of tempdir()
Hi, One of the functions I use needs to write to a temporary file, in the directory given by tempdir(). I want to change this from the standard one, as the file is too large for the drive. However, tempfile() doesnt seem to respect the environment variables when I change them with Sys.setenv(). In a fresh R-session: > Sys.getenv("TMP") [1]

Strange behavior when using progress bar (Fwd: Re: [R] The code itself disappears after starting to execute the for loop)
I first answered to the email below in r-help, but as I did not see any response, and it looks like a bug/unwanted behavior, I am also posting here. I have observed this in RGui, whereas it seems not to happen in RStudio. Similar to OP, I sometimes have a problem with functions using the progress bar. Frequently, the console is cleared after x iterations when the progress bar is called in a

Small modification of zip.file.extract in utils?
Dear list, I needed to extract a zip-archive, and found zip.file.extract in utils. My only problem was the use of tempdir(), since I wanted to permanently extract the archive at a fixed location for later use. My own fix was simple, adding an extra parameter zipdir (without default), and within the function change tmpd <- tempdir() to tmpd = ifelse(missing(zipdir),tempdir(),zipdir) This

Error using PostScriptTrace()
I couldn't run PostScriptTrace() from the package "grImport" without an error. At first the postscript program couldn't be found. however the problem persisted after the full path the postscript program was indicated. I read earlier post on the subject in vain. See the codes and output below. The file "Senegal_location_map.ps" was originally a "svg" file from:
