dsync mbox to maildir migration does not delete, deleted e-mails
Hello,
I am planning to migrate all users from mbox to maildir.
I am trying to do it with minimum downtime. (~100GB data)
All users are currently using POP3.
Dovecot version is 2.2.10 (latest).
Command used is:
dsync -u username mirror maildir:~/Maildir
Process I plan is: (omitting steps related to sendmail / procmail)
1) keep dovecot running (with mail_location as mbox)
2) dsync for all

mail location change results in various errors
I have a sendmail/dovecot imap/pop3 system that has been running with
the following mail_location:
mail_location =
mbox:/var/empty:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u
In order to reduce errors and simplify operation I removed imap and am
now only responding to pop3. I'd like to also simplify the
mail_location to get rid of index errors since I don't need indexes:

Mail being delivered to mbox instead of Maildir
I thought I had Dovecot configured to use Maildir instead of mbox, but
apparently it is still using mbox.

IMAP storage - mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:mbox:~/mail/
I'm moving to IMAP and trying to understand all the details of where to
save email. The system is CentOS running sendmail - procmail which
delivers as:
DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/
I'm trying also to use Usermin as the webmail client. I can get mail to
deliver to $HOME/Maildir/ and I can get clients (thunderbird outlook
etc) to view them. However Usermin seems stuck with saving

Dovecot mail_location creating duplicate mbox mail directories
Hi all,
I'm using dovecot v2.0.11 on fedora14 with postfix. This system was
migrated from an old UW mbox system, so users already have
~/mail/INBOX.* files. Now for some reason, dovecot is creating
~/mail/mail/INBOX.* files and somehow not seeing the mail_location
properly.
I've set mail_location to "mail_location =
mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u", which has worked on a

From Sendmail to Dovecot mdbox, what is missing.
Sendmail 8.14.4
dovecot 2.0.9
I have sendmail working and it is sending mail to /var/mail/%u.
I have dovecot working in that I can move emails into IMAP folders and I can send email through IMAP. I have set up dovecot to use mdbox based on the following:
mail_location = mdbox:~/mail
However, I seem to be lacking a key piece of information.
Sendmail is sending the mail to /var/mail/%u as a

..::MBOX ISSUE::..
Hi everyone.
I have a postfix working with sasl auth and dovecot, everything works
fine. I just have 2 issues, the first is that if you add the IMAP mail
accounts you can import all the mboxes on the /var/spool/mail/ which we
don't want.
The second issue is that there's no sent, trash and draft folder, so if
we have imap we are not able to store those emails.
Basically I would like

Convert from mbox to Maildir
Hi Josef,
Just went through this one recently using CentOS with SendMail, Procmail
and IMAP conversion from mbox to Maildir - I needed to make sure I could
run both formats while I migrated users one-by-one.
Not sure if what I did helps, but I created a 'how-to' page on it on my
website rather than post an essay on the e-mail forum:

Nevermind. I figured it out. I left off the INDEX command. Sorry to spam
the mail list :(
Here is my mail_location for future reference / searches:

"sieve: failed to store into mailbox 'Junk': Read-only mbox" over root_squashed NFS, lmtp : euid/egid set and access() don't mix together for me
Hi,
I try to migrate an old fashioned mailsystem to Debian 9.7 / dovecot
2.2.7. I "have" to cope with mbox for now. I try to get rid of Sun OS
5.9 sendmail before mbox to mdbox migration (I'm fine if you laugh
loudly ^^). Intended setup : 2 VM with exim (smtp in, smtp out roughly),
3 VM with dovecot (mbox, maildir, testbed), 1 VM with IMAP proxy and
LMTP proxy.
doveconf -n is

Problem in mbox-sync.c
We've just cut over to a new mail server running Dovecot 1.0.5.
The underlying OS is RHEL 5. User mailboxes are stored in Unix mbox
format on a local ext3 file system. The MTA on the system is the
default RedHat version of Sendmail 8.13.8 with procmail for local
delivery. We're using a combination of dotlock and fcntl style locking.
The output of "dovecot -n" for this system

My sub-folder with Outlook work-around to date - update 201710091046
Hi Mike,
I haven't seen your messages come through the feed so something is not
working for your e-mail address there?
No I am not using Sieve - the server has a third party handling spam etc
so the Linux box is very basic SendMail, Dovecot and RoundCube setup
(along with my own procmail based web interface for e-mail forwarding
and away message responses).
I struggle on.

Unable to get virtual users set up with database auth
I can't seem to get imap virtual users to work with database
authentication on new Scientific Linux 6.5 server with Sendmail 8.14.4 &
Dovecot 2.0.9
Apparently I have to also create system users because
sendmail/procmail/dovecot want to check directory ownership.
So I created a database, made entry for the user, created the user
chayes on the system.
But %u always contains just chayes

Using mbox INBOX with Maildirs?
Thanks for everybody's tips on the mbox to maildirs
converter. I was unaware that Maildirs was a common
format not specific to dovecot, so I was searching
using a dovecot keyword.
I'm having this problem now with inboxes. I want to
use maildirs, but my mail is delivered to an mbox. I
can't seem to get dovecot to recognize the inbox
location. Is something like:

mbox corruption
Running CentOS 4.4, Sendmail...
I've been experiencing some mbox corruption this week. Mail clients
can't pick up mail and SquirrelMail gives an error.. of which the logs
state "File isn't in mbox format".
Is anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas about a correction? Cause?
Thanks,

File isn't in mbox format: /home/foo/mail/Trash
Hello,
I'm seeing the following error on a server:
File isn't in mbox format: /home/foo/mail/Trash
The Trash file is full of the following at the beginning:
^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^
I've repaired the file several times, but this keeps happening. Would
any of you mind offering me some insight into what could be causing this
and how to fix it?
