nightmare scenario
Hi All,
I am trying to test an upgrade to the operating system on my file
server. I am going from RHEL 5 32-bit to Debian 7.8 64-bit. Samba is
also being moved from 3.0.33 to 3.6.6. My initial attempt on an existing
Debian 7.8 machine seems to work fine. I am able to smbclient with an
LDAP user and see the shares.
A fresh install of Debian on another test machine is where the nightmare

Publication & Project: Verificarlo: checking floating point accuracy through Monte Carlo Arithmetic
Hi,
We have recently published a paper on floating point accuracy analysis
through Monte Carlo Arithmetic. We also released the open-source tool
Verificarlo (https://github.com/verificarlo/verificarlo) that relies on
LLVM for instrumenting floating point operations.
Could you please add our paper to http://llvm.org/pubs/ ?

Sync data between various PuppetDB instances
Dear all,
We have a few reasons to have various PuppetDBs (and Masters, one per
cluster) in our datacenter and, eventually, there may be a need to share
*only* a few exported resources between clusters, like a few ssh-keys or
nagios tests.
Is there a mechanism to pull and push some exported resources from one
PuppetDB to another? I guess this could be done with the API, but has
anybody tried it,

Puppetdb will setting gc-interval to 0 disable it
I have multiple puppetdb severs pointed at the same database.
Would setting gc-interval to 0 disable it on the extra puppetdb nodes?

R 2.5.0 refuses to print enough digits to recover exact floating point values
I have noticed that in R 2.5.0, no method of textual output will print
a "double" mode quantity with more than 15 digits after the decimal
point. From the help page (?print.default) it appears that this is
intentional, since digits after the fifteenth may be uncertain.
However, fifteen digits after the decimal point are not enough to
represent all the values that an IEEE-double can

Migration from NT4 to W2K3 AD
Are there any gotcha's.....
I am currently using winbindd and very successfully integrating my Samba
boxes with the NT4 domain structure. The admin who is doing the migration
(A corporate person not used to Linux at all) is already nervous about the
migration since it involves Linux.
Usernames are not supposed to change..but, the authentication domain is

freebsd-update to 6.4-RELEASE doesn't work
Dear list,
I cannot upgrade my 6.3-RELEASE-p7/i386 to 6.4-RELEASE with
freebsd-update. I have run:
# freebsd-update upgrade -r 6.4-RELEASE
and then
# freebsd-update install
No updates are available to install.
Run '/usr/sbin/freebsd-update fetch' first.
any ideas?
(btw: I've successful updated 6.3REL/amd64 to 6.4-REL)
Best regards,
Thomas.

Limit on vector evaluation
Dear R Experts,
Why I try to run this expression:
x<-sapply(rnorm(rep(10,100000),mean=9,sd=1.5),mean)
it evaluates the first 10000 values and then stops, but does not return
to the command prompt. My cpu keeps running at 100%. When I exit the
expression with CTL-C, I then see that x holds 10000 values. How can I
evalute the expression 100000 times, or more if I want?
Thanks in advance.

facter fails to detect network interfaces with long names
I have Gentoo host where `ifconfig -a` prints long interface names
truncated to 9 chars (there is closed bug report [1]).
Unfortunately, `facter` uses `ifconfig -a` output to get list of
interface names and because of truncation it generates `interfaces`
fact with incorrect interface names. Also it fails to retrieve
individual interface information with following message for
each interface with

FreeBSD9.2-RC1 bootonly network installation fetch error (snapshots vs releases)
Hello :-)
I am installing the 9.2-RC1 bootonly iso which wants to download stuff from
snapshots while it is in releases directory:
Installer wants to get 9.2-RC1 stuff from here (where it is missing):
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/i386/i386/
While the stuff is at:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/i386/9.2-RC1/
Please fix :-)
Best regards :-)

Joining an AD domain when hostname != netbios name
I'm trying to join a RHEL5 host to an AD domain, and can do this
successfully when I set those hostname to the same value as the samba
"netbios name" parameter. However, when I try with a hostname !=
netbios name, it fails. Is it possible to join a machine when the
hostname isn't the same as the netbios name?
The reason for wanting this is because I have a whole load of servers

Puppet/Nagios/PuppetDB slow performance
Hi all,
For months now I''ve been using Puppet with PuppetDB backend to manage my
Nagios configs. We now have 1200+ services being checked and including
servicedependency, host, hostdependency, command and other Nagios
resources being managed, that''s about 3000 resources in total.
Unfortunately this means the monitoring server takes about 8 minutes to
perform a Puppet run.
