em watchdog timeout on UP, 6-stable
Updated my Athlon-xp 6-stable system last night, got an em watchdog
timeout for the first time a few hours later, during a fairly
high-traffic period. System is UP but does have device apic in
the config. Any chance this is the recent race condition?
Workaround? ifconfig em0 down, ifconfig em0 up seemed to cure it,
at least for the moment.
Thanks,

Is the unsupported kernel considered stable-ish?
I have a need to use the unsupported kernel for one feature only
(AFP/Appletalk support). Never having had to use it before, I''m unsure
of what''s all in it other than reading it''s config file.
From those that do use it -- is it considered stable enough to use in
lightweight production? I''m debating the use of it versus wasting my
time rebuilding the normal

Netatalk connection on Samba machine account - security breach?

Dear Samba and Netatalk experts,
I've got a server running both samba 2.2.3a as PDC and netatalk (1.5pre7
as supplied by SuSE73). Samba machine accounts are added to /etc/passwd
automatically by the command
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g 90 -s /bin/false -M %u

Dynamic Link Aggregation via Samba
Hi,
I have run into the following I bonded 6 NICs on my Cent OS server into
a 600MB pipe. I use bond method 4 = dynamic Link aggregation. My Cysco
Switch supports this apparently.
However I only get increased bandwidth from my MAC by connecting via
AFP. However when I connect via SMB I don't. I was told to change the
sockect options to the following on my smb.conf file on my fileserver:

Need a little kick start to compile appletalk module
RHEL 4 (and thus CentOS 4) do not have appletalk module included.
CentOSPlus rather thoughtfully has the 'unsupported' version which would
have the appletalk module but I have been unable to get the old megaraid
driver to run compiled from the kernel-devel for these 'unsupported'
kernels.
Thus I would love to simply compile the appletalk module myself from the

Appletalk printing through Samba
Hi,
I've really tried a lot of things but can't work it out....
I've got a Apple Laserwriter 630 working through appletalk/netatalk. Using
lp/lpr I'm able to print, no problem.
However, when using samba through Windows ME, the printer will print my
pages but also throws out an additional blank page and a page with:

AppleTalk(netatalk)+Samba
Hi folks,
is anybody using those two products together and can give me any advice
on how to do this? My specific issue has been addressed in other posts
before, but as nobody responded, it would just now be interesting if
anybody at least uses those applications together successfully?

Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test
I am trying to determine whether two samples are identical or not. I'm
aware that somebody can use the Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test to compare
empirical distributions, but since my samples have ties I'm not sure if
I'm getting the right p-values for the comparison. Can the
Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test be adjusted for the case when ties exists and
are there any functions that already

Ambiguous columns from related tables
Hi all,
I''ve got an issue where i have a search page that passes a field which is then used as the criteria of the search. Problem is, I''ve set an AR has_many relationship in the model that joins one table to another - both tables have the same column name I''m searching on, so naturally I get an ambiguous error in sql - it doesnt know which column to apply the search

Using unicode symbol has unexpected results in levels of factor object
Dear all,
When I use a unicode symbol in the labels for a factor object, the corresponding level does not display as expected. However, using levels() on the factor returns the desired output. I noticed the discrepancy when the legend labels from a call to ggplot() did not display the desired symbol, but an explicitly built legend using the same labels did.
Example (I am trying to get the less

Help With File transfer of files named "Apple*" + Lacie 5Big RAID
Hello Rsync Community,
I have been using rsync for several years to backup servers across an
array of different areas.
I have run into a new problem that I cannot find an answer for.
We just recently purchased a Lacie 5Big Network RAID: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1596257
for one organization.
We set up a test server to start backing up to this RAID via AFP. The

4.8.5 + TimeMachine = Disk identity changed on every connect, cannot backup
Hi,
I configured Samba 4.8.5 on Debian (Buster) with vfs_fruit as a TimeMachine destination and while it detects it and does the initial backup to some extent (30GB out of 200GB),
TimeMachine then fails with a message about the disk identity having changed.
Options are “don’t backup” and “backup anyway”. When using “backup anyway”, the backup creates a secondary sparse image and starts from

Samba And Macintosh(netatalk)
Hello,
Anyone out there running a production network supporting PC and Macintosh
clients using samba and netatalk. we are currently using NT 4.0 with
AppleTalk-IP software. Sharing the same files with the Macs and the pc is
a must.
I read someplace that samba 2.2.2 supports Appletalk. Is this true?
Thanks,

Inconsistent behavior using 3.1.2 from macOS 10.12.2 to an AFP mount
Hi,
I've been attempting to use rsync 3.1.2 to copy files from a macOS 10.12.2
system to an AFP mounted share. The command I'm using is:
rsync -avAX -M--fake-super ./testDir ./mnt/testDir/
This works fine and all the extended attributes are copied and readable.
I then try to use rsync to copy these files back with:
rsync -avAX --fake-super -M--super ./mnt/testDir/ ./testDir2/

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi,
as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL
drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking
for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html
Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a
good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that is mainly used for file

ANNOUNCEMENT: New Project- Baltra (AFP/SMB services compatibility)
(This is a brief announcement of a focused development/refinement of the
Netatalk project.)
The primary goal of Baltra is to provide a Mac OS X compatible AFP file
sharing service with Samba 3.0 compatibility. We are hoping to have an
AFP file sharing daemon which can run in parallel with Samba 3.0 to
provide seemless file sharing amoungst SMB-based clients (Windows and
MacOS-X) as well as
