Testing SMTP AUTH
Ive configured Postfix to use Dovecot for SMTP AUTH.
I tried to test it but when I send the AUTH LOGIN command I get a response
saying that AUTH method is not supported/implemented. How to test then?

Dovecot newbie (migrating from qmail)
Ive been using qmail+vpopmail+courier-imap for many years but its time to
retire that server so I thought this might be an opportunity to see how I
could use Postfix and Dovecot to provide the same services. Im running
Dovecot 2.1.9 and Postfix 2.9.4.
I have spent a few days reading through some of the docs on the wiki
(there's doesn't seem to be any large overview of Dovecot concepts or

LDA versus LMTP
My system has a great big four users. The Dovecot wiki says LMTP is
more efficient, and someone on IRC told me I'd need it if I were ever
to use sieve, which at this time I have no intention of doing. Should
I stick with LDA, or just implement LMTP so I'm ready if ever I need
it in the future? The bottom line is, it's unclear from the wiki how
to explicitly specify use of one or the

Migrating from CommunigatePro to Dovecot - anyone done this?
Apologies if this is in the archive - did look but couldn't find it.
Does anyone have any experience of migrating from CommunigatePro to Dovecot?
We currently run CGP 5.3.4, supporting a small system (20 or so users, one domain). We've been using it for years, and have a mixed bag of MailDir and mbox folders accessed via IMAP clients. Some users have large mail accounts (15GB total).

move mail from server with v1.0 to server w. v2.1?
I'm about to replace my old server. Both servers are on my internal network.
The old one ist running debian lenny(32bit) with dovecot 1.0.15 and the
new one debian Wheezy with dovecot 2.1.7.
I set up the users on both systems identically (same gid uid).
My first attempt was tho simply rsync the Maildirs along with the homes.
Both deovecot versions are set up with the maildir format, but this

looking for feedbacks on courier to dovecot
Manao ahoana, Hello, Bonjour,
We currently run courier POP .
We would like to switch to Dovecot.
I encounter problems when migrating the UIDL because we have big
Maildirs and POP re-downlading the data is not possible for most of the
users.
I tried the http://www.dovecot.org/tools/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl
script but I still have the re-downloading event.
What are your stories and advices

Migrating maildirs - Courier to Dovecot
I apologise, because I'm sure this subject has been done to death, but I want to migrate from Courier to Dovecot.
I think my main question is whether there's any reason I shouldn't just rsync the maildirs across from the old mail server to the new one?
There aren't many clients using this server, so I don't care if clients have to redownload all their messages (in fact, I

DRY in Models
I am building an app right now that needs to grant access to three
levels of members right now - each will have their own table in the DB.
When creating the add_user action I am converting the password into a
hashed password through the model.
The way I am doing this right now, I will inevitably end up with
repeated code in three different models. Is there a way I can define
this code in

migration from dovecot to dovecot on different servers without downtime (dovecot replication?)
Hello,
I have an imap server with huge Maildirs and several users running
dovecot 1.0.13, I need to migrate all the imap accounts to a new box
which runs dovecot 1.1.4.
The requisite is that need to do it with no downtime or minimal downtime
possible, and totally transparent for end users.
I have tried IMAP<-->IMAP syncing using a master user in both servers
and imapsync, however due

courier2dovecot migration script
Howdy,
I've just migrated a couple of servers to Dovecot, and am loving it so
far. I thought I'd share the courier2dovecot shell script I whipped
together (based on the instructions I found in the wiki.dovecot.org
migration how-to), for converting Courier-IMAP maildirs to Dovecot
format. It can be downloaded from my home page:

While the script is rather

Restoring older messages to new server?
I had Dovcot 1.x setup, all was working well (till...)
Server got stuffed up and same Dovecot 1.x was rebuilt, put back in service, all's working well.
I have recovered data from Maildirs messages from the old server,
As some of the inboxes now have new messages, what is correct way to copy older messages from old server to new server ? (There are no duplicates, simply old messages from
