Spacewalk or Puppet?
I am a little new to managing large numbers of CentOS/RHEL servers and was wondering what you experienced sysadmins prefer, Spacewalk or Puppet? rpm user and groups
Hi! This is a rpm question. For example, mysql-server is adding mysql user with uid 27 Is this something I can ask the rpm db? It seems not, because something like the following seems to give me no useful information regarding users or uids $ rpm -qa --provides|grep mysql I would like to ask: what package would install uid XXX. How? Not possible? -- Kind Regards, Markus Falb --------------

Spacewalk? Local repo? Cache?
I have a mix of CentOS 5, 6, and now 7 servers at work. There are enough of them now that it is starting to make sense for them to get updates from an internal source. I've seen RHN Satellite in years past. It looks like it may be a way to allow Windows admins here (familiar with WSUS) to update Linux boxes. A local repo might be easier to set up, but (as with Spacewalk) it seems like

CentOS 7 AMI Building
Yes... we currently use Packer to achieve a repeatable build process, from scratch. We'd like to replicate that and be able to build from scratch without spinning up an EC2 instance, in an automated way. I don't know how to phrase this, so apologies if it comes across wrong, I have immense respect for you personally and for CentOS... but, is it really that difficult to post the kickstarts

Building RPM, Unknown tag Licence & Copyright
Hi all, When trying to rpmbuild http://robert.cheramy.net/ipfm/browser/trunk/redhat/ipfm.spec, I do this: [mihamina at centos6-01 redhat]$ rpmbuild -ba ipfm.spec error: line 5: Unknown tag: Licence: GPL And I get the error above. [mihamina at centos6-01 redhat]$ head -n 5 ipfm.spec Summary: IP Flow Meter is a bandwidth analysis tool Name: ipfm Version: 0.12.0rc1 Release:

yum/RPM and Trust on First Use
I'm not on the yum / RPM list and I don't know that I want to join just to discuss this but with respect GPG keys - it is a classic example of trust on first use. The first time yum installs a package, it asks to import the GPG key used to sign the packages. Most people accept without validating the key. This is potentially exploitable because most repositories are http What if there

Keeping iptables in sync across multiple machines
hi, Just wondering what people use / recommend to keep multiple machines in sync with their iptables policy. What I use at the moment: 1) Puppet, to setup and manage a fairly complex per service type ruleset that is then maintained on the remote machines by puppet ( in that it brings together all the various bits of iptables snippets based on what manifests and roles are deployed to a

Spacewalk Client Tools from Stahnma
Dear Patrice, I have noticed that you are referencing to the Stahnma repository for Spacewalk Client Tools. These are quite old and I would suggest to use the tools from: http://spacewalk.redhat.com/yum instead. Mr. Suchy already pushed some of the packages to Fedora/EPEL so they might be available there, soon. Besides that the Spacewalk Team is thinking about a split between client/server on

Best way to hold at 5.3 release
I need to do some testing with 5.3 as its suggested that 5.4 has "some bugs in the toolchain and libc". That being the case, I can install with a url and repo line pointing to a mirror with 5.3 still but how does one properly make sure during subsequent uses of yum it doesn't attempt to use 5.4 rpms? Is it simple enough to just manually set '$releasever' to 5.3 in the repo

Spacewalk howto for CentOS 5
Hi, I would like to contribute a howto page about the configuration of Spacewalk for package management under CentOS 5. Spacewalk is the upstream project for the source of RedHat Network Satellite. It provides a management interface for software updates across registered servers and desktops. Here is were I would like to put this page: <http://www.redhat.com/red_hat_network/>

CentOS 6 sync from ftp yum repos into Spacewalk
Hello, When I try to sync CentOS 6 from different ftp mirrors using spacewalk command "spacewalk-repo-sync" I get this message " 'Unable to load package', 'Invalid information uploaded to the server' " for 38 packages. When I check, these 38 packages are not named correctly. For example, sync command is looking for

ipv6 only kickstart installs
Hi, I have a kvm host and I try to install a centos 6 guest with a static ip address. When I do a manual install I eventually get to the network configuration and if I enter IP, gateway and DNS Server I can ping6 the guest from the host and I can ping6 the guest from outside. I do not want to do manual installation, so I have to specify a url to a kickstart file, but to download it the network

CentOS 7 AMI Building
Hello, I'm new to this list, but I noticed a post from March 30th inquiring about the build scripts for the official CentOS7 AMIs. I'm also interested in this; I'm tasked with (unfortunately) spinning up some VMs in our corporate VMWare environment that are "as close as possible" to the official CentOS7 AMIs. I could attempt to reverse-engineer them and figure out all of the
