Question about ERB performance
I''m trying out rails 3 and I''m looking at the performance statistics
given by WEBrick.
It says many of my database operations are taking 2ms or 7ms... but
the view is taking 40ms. People often say that the database is the
bottleneck in applications (which it most certainly can be, and often
is)... but isn''t the rendering of ERB a little show here? My test

(annoying) question: Netbeans vs Rubymine
Hi,
I''m don''t want to start another post about what''s the best IDE. Am just
considering getting a licence for Rubymine which is 99$ I think. But I don''t
know whether it''s really better than Netbeans. My focus is on BDD with
cucumber, Rspec and Shoulda. Can anyone tell me his/her experience concering
test support in those two IDE''s

RoR failure
I am a newbie at RoR and am disappointed by the fact that I couldn''t
install it in my Ubuntu 10.10 using an IDE. I tried NetBeans 6.9.1,
Eclipse 3.6.2, Aptana Studio and its plugin for Eclipse and RubyMine.
There was always a problem somewhere (rails, rubygems, rake, etc)
preventing me from working with my project. I currently have Netbeans
6.9.1 bundled with java jdk 1.6.0. I''ve

Spec''ing via features
As I work with Rails TestUnit tests I am reconsidering how to use
cucumber features. It seems to me that it might be best to have a
coherent view of how to arrange my test suites before I get much further
into this. Now, so far I have considered three possibilities:
1. Use features exclusively. Create a feature file for each model, one
for each controller and possibly an additional one for

ifelse logic and multiple assignments
I'm a fairly new R user and while I have a solution to my problem I'm
wondering if there is a better one.
In SAS it's common to use if/then logic along with a "do" statement to
make several things happen. While I could do the same thing in R
using a "for" loop, and "if" and {}, I've read that loops are less
common in R and I wonder if I'm doing

Why RSpec?
I like Shoulda. Sometimes I like plain old Test::Unit. Cucumber
gives me a different thought process.
I''d just like to hear some thoughts on why RSpec? What does it buy me
that I can''t get with Shoulda? I just can''t seem to think in RSpec.
Where is there a good example of RSpec tests that will help me grasp
the right path?
Thanks!

[PATCH 1/2] Revert "ruby: Run tests one at a time, instead of in parallel."
It seems the default behaviour of rake is to run tests sequentially, and
not in parallel (there are separate gems to achieve that behaviour).
Hence just invoke "rake test" to run all the available tests at once.
This reverts commit 8f30c3c3f8c063f7c5ff8c6154d881e07a820251.

drawing filled countries according to data using map('world')? - follow up
Hello,
this is a follow up on my previous inquiry regarding the use of the map
library (Becker and Wilks 1993).
Using the 'world' database I would like to draw filled countries in a world
map so that the filling colors of each country corresponds to the value of a
policy variable "fix.float" at a specific "year" (the goal is to visualize a
policy diffusion pattern

Minitest mock or stub methods
Hi
I''m building a small library to use in my Rails app which interacts with a
3rd party API. It fetches artists and tracks.
So I have:
lib/my_lib.rb
lib/my_lib/artist.rb
lib/my_lib/track.rb
To get an artist I do
artist = MyLib::Artist.find("Oasis")
Which returns an instance of Artist if it finds (via 3rd party API) it or
nil otherwise.
Then I can call artist.tracks which

[hivex PATCH] ruby: improve test functions
Use better functions to check for proper values instead of assert:
- refute_nil for non-null functions
- assert_equal for checking equality
Also, make sure that the parameters for assert_equal are correct:
expected value, then got value.
