simple generation of artificial data with defined features
Dear R-colleagues, I am quite a newbie to R fighting my stupidity to solve a probably quite simple problem of generating artificial data with defined features. I am conducting a study of inter-observer-agreement in child-bronchoscopy. One of the most important measures is Kappa according to Fleiss, which is very comfortable available in R through the irr-package. Unfortunately medical doctors

survey package question
Hello, I have got a cluster sample using an election dataset where I already had the final results of a county-specific election. I am trying to figure out what would be the best sampling design for my data. The structure of the dataset is: 1) polling station (in general schools where people vote, for a county, for example, there are 15 polling stations) 2) inside each polling station, there

biometrics in samba 4
Hello Lads, I am not a programmer in any shape or form, so bare with me. Windows AD can support biometric devices, such as fingerprint logins, it actually stores the fingerprint in the database. Will it be possible to store this information in a Samba4 AD enviroment? Cheers, Adrian Sender.

Possible overfitting of a GAM
The subject is a Generalized Additive Model. Experts caution us against overfitting the data, which can cause inaccurate results. I am not a statistician (my background is in Computer Science). Perhaps some kind soul would take a look and vet the model for overfitting the data. The study estimated the ebb and flow of traffic through a voting place. Just one voting place was studied; the

parallel scanner support (general question)
Hi, I'm using the Umax Astra 610p scanner (parallel port scanner). Unfortunately, it is not supported by sane as Umax is not publishing specs. Searching on google I found out that some people got it working using vmware but nobody could get it working with wine. That is surprising me because people seem to get lots of complicated windows applications working but not a small scanner

Recognising an unrecognisable scanner
I have to figure out how to use a scanner that sane doesn't officially recognise. Wine installed the twain software with no problems, and the apps come up just fine. The scanner drivers should be installed in wine, but I'm having some serious issues getting linux to recognise that there's a device connected. Is there any way to tell wine to see the device? If not, how would I pass

Hamlet' question about wine and scanner: to be or not to be (supported)?
Hi, I have an old partport optical scanner (an LG Scanwork 36a)... Of course,I can't use this scanner with linux (no driver). So, I'm trying to install win-driver with wine. :-) I read documentation (unfortunately insufficient) and... I fell in an "Hamlet' question"! The wine user manual asserts that I can install scanner's win-driver in wine, unfortunately with too

scanner only works in su mode
Apparently I hadn't done any scanning since my move to centos. hp-scan works for root, but not for me as me. When I try to use xsane, it tells me no device found. When I try to use hp-scan as myself it tells me: error: Unable to locate device hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_C3100_series?serial=CN6ARC321S04KV using SANE backend hpaio:. Please check HPLIP installation. What do I change to make it let me

Virus Scanner
Hello Listers, does anyone know about virus scanners working on Unix hosts but scanning for all those bad vermin from the M$ world. Best solution (for me) would be a tight coupling with samba, monitoring the I/O as some PC scanners do. Any suggestions? TIA, -- Detlef ////
