Hello Listers, does anyone know about virus scanners working on Unix hosts but scanning for all those bad vermin from the M$ world. Best solution (for me) would be a tight coupling with samba, monitoring the I/O as some PC scanners do. Any suggestions? I think it was Mc Affee for Linux - but I?m not sure. Howerer, this product is not especially designed for samba, but some scripts should do the job. Greetings, Florian
Hi, Network associates sell Netshield for Linux, and other Un*x's that does just what you are after. it can be setup to scan only public directories for both Word/Excel virus's and the more common exe/com virus's The problem is that I am pretty sure its discontinued product, but you might be able to find a copy around somewhere Thanks Justin Hammond Network Associates Technical Analyst - Asia Pacific Level 1 500 Pacific Hwy, St Leonards, NSW, 2065 Ph: (+612) 84254200 Dct:(+612) 84254227 Fax: (+612) 9439 5166 http:\\www.nai.com Network Associates - "who's watching your network?" I've tried the recommended McAfee Virus Scan on a Solaris Samba server and it seems to work fine EXCEPT: It updates the ctime (last status change) on ALL the files it checks. This is a problem if you are using UNIX dump for backups as dump looks at the ctime to see if a file needs backing up since the last lower level dump. (cpio doesn't look at the ctime so that's fine.) Hey presto! Whenever you do a virus scan all your incremental dump backups turn into fulls! Unless there's some way of making the ctime invisible through the samba share... -- ^~^~^~^~^~^~^^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ Martin Brown, Senior UNIX Systems and Network Administrator ADI Ltd, Systems Group, Private Bag 2, Nth Ryde 2113, Australia Phone: +61 2 9325 1645 Fax: 9325 1600 Email: martin.brown@sg.adisys.com.au
