RoR - getting started with database relations
Hey everyone... I''m just getting my feet wet with relational databases using RoR models. The software I''m putting together relies on car parts. Originally I had the database set up as follows create_table :parts do |t| t.column :year, :string t.column :make, :string t.column :model, :string . . . end However, I now realize it''s much better to do it using

Create Two objects at the same time
I have user model and referral model. Referral model has user_id as field. Now when a new user is created, I need to call referral#create as well and pass it the id of the newly generated user to user_id of referral model. How can I do that. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. To post to this group, send email to

Is it suitable using STI?
I have problems on a simple design problem. I have many companies. Each company have one or more commercial activity. Activities types are: ecommerce, local unit, television, automatic vending machines, and so on. Company may have one or more ecommerce activity or one or more local unit activity, one ormore vending machines, etc. How can I model this scenario? Company has_many ecommerce has_many

Single Table Mapping
This is pretty simple, but I must be missing the obvious. I''ve got a table that''s similar to this: USERS: - id int - username varchar(64) - password varchar(64) - role_id int ROLES: - id int - description varchar(16) I''ve had no troubles doing has_many relationships at all. But I want to map the user.role directly to the role model automatically (which sounds

Question about file_column plugin
Hi! File_column plugin saves uploaded files to "public/model/image/model_id/filename", if i understand it correctly. Does it mean that it creates new folder for every image? I have product (model) that has_many images (model). Is it possible to use (or modify) this plugin that it would save my images to different folder, so the id of the model_id part would be id of the product

Rails Naming Conventions
DB field names: If I have a table that references 2 or more separate users from my users table, is there a recommended naming convention for this situation? In my case, I have 3 users associated with a record in my projects table: requester_user_id created_by updated_by I could name one of them "user_id", and then projects.user would work I guess, but wouldn''t work

has_one without inverse belongs_to
I have two models called entity and user. The entities table has a column called users_id that contains the user id of the user that created the entity. In entity I have... has_one :user ... as I want to be able to show the user who created the entity from the entity object. But this produces the following error... Mysql::Error: #42S22Unknown column ''users.entity_id'' in

User Favorites
Hi there, I''m currently creating a simple (at least so I thought) structure of user favorites. Basically users can add certain ''objects'' to their list of favorites. Here is my current structure (simplified) class User has_many :favorites end class Book belongs_to :favorites end class Favorite belongs_to :user has_one :book end The table favorite just has a two

Help with DRY: too much code in my view
I''m a newbie to rails, and really to the whole DRY and MVC thing as well, except where I accidentally fell into things doing it my own way in the past. I''ve got a fairly complex DB structure I want to create an interface for using Rails. Getting simple tables to display, edit, save, not too much problem there. But where I''m having trouble is figuring out where to

Validating a required relationship.
Hello, I''m not sure if I''m missing something blindingly obvious here. All the relationships that Rails comes with assume 0..n, yes? It''s not a strict 1 to 1 or 1 to n because it''s optional. My question is this - What is the best way to implement a required relationship? For example, if I require that a comment is made by a user (a user has many

rails 4, active record: appending to has_many :through does not create join model anymore?
hi folks. on rails 4, can somebody confirm that pushing model instances onto a has_many :through relation does not create the necessary join model anymore? class Reader < AR::Base belongs_to :post belongs_to :person end class Post < AR::Base has_many :readers has_many :people, through: :readers end @post.people << Person.new so,

Help setting up relationships needed
This is a bit of a long question, but to those of you with some experience, it should be fairly simple I think. I have a notes page that should list all notes the user has entered for all books chronologically like this. Book One: This is the note. Book Four: This is the note. Book One: A different note, entered later. Right now my models are: User has_many :books Book has_many

Products and category both have images in the same image table. ie. a product and / or category could have multiple images.<=== my question is related to this So among other things I presume I have to do the following: class Category < ActiveRecord:Base #...

has_one/belongs_to -- accessing the subordinate
With a has_one/belongs_to relationship, what''s the best way to guarantee that the belongs_to object gets created and is accessible alongside the has_one object? I *think* the after_create callback is a good choice, but I discovered an oddity while trying it.
