net.ipv4 TCP/IP Optimizations = sysctl.conf?
If I execute these via command line, will they persist after a reboot?
Or, should I be putting these into a file like /etc/sysctl.conf?

Desktop link for NTFS .htm file type asks for run or display in CentOS 4.4
I created a desktop launcher whose type was a link and pointed to an
NTFS file on a read-only ( ro ) partition. When I open the launcher it
always asks me whether I want to display or run the file. Of course I
want display it and when I click on that button it displays it in my
browser, Firefox, correctly. It is neverthless onerous to constantly be
asked and have to then click the correct

CentOS 5 & USB Kickstart?
Is anybody else having problems with CentOS 5 not loading the usb
drivers for kickstart installations?
I'm passing "linux ks=hd:sdb1:/ks.cfg," but I get a message saying it
can't find the ks.cfg file and I should enter another path. I use the
exact same boot options with CentOS 4 without any problems.
What am I missing with CentOS 5? Thanks for any tips.

Dag repository...
A bit of a new guy around these parts...
I've done a bit of looking, and haven't found any newbie-friendly
instructions on how to add the Dag repository to my CentOS4 box. Could
somebody help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks...

64-bit ISO Burning Failures
Hi,
I have downloaded several different sets of the 64-bit ISOs, and have
burned them to CD using various of my known-good ISO burning softwares,
including Nero and DeepBurn on Windows, as well as the native CD burning
KDE linux tool on Xandros Linux. I am using mirrors from the site, like
kernel.org.
I have chosen low burning speeds also, but when I insert the ISO CD into a
server and boot it

Centos 4.3: VPN recommend/ howto anyone?
Hi,
I'm just curious about setting up a new VPN here in the office part of our
enterprise, as well as a second in our 75+ node data center co-location
facility.
Needing to stomp out the ****dows L2TP node here, just too many
side-issues with config.
I'd like it to run the same OS as all of our servers, e.g. Centos 4.3.
Any recommedations on which software/server/client

Iptables front-end
Hi all,
?What iptables do you use to manage iptables? ?Or maybe not?
Simply curiosity, so I'm coming from openSUSE and in that distro there
is a YaST module front-end (YaST firewall).
TIA.

X Error: Nvidia Onboard - Supermicro
Howdy all,
Any recommendation as to the right way to config X. Last time I did was
using X86Setup back in OpenBSD 2.7 days.
What's the Xorg tool? How do I invoke it? Looks like I just need to
fix the ranges, maybe they mean sync vert & horiz or something.
Or should I be typing gdm instead of startx?
Any advice? -below are some errors, infos, although the dmesg didn't
pipe out

Vsftpd/Centos Issue: Client Time Display Wrong
Hi,
We have patched Centos 4.4 to work properly with the recent DST changes,
but our customers are reporting wrong FTP client timestamps based on
which areas they live in.
What are the two main mechanisms in Centos that control time? I know
about /etc/localtime and TZDATA, is there something we may have missed?
Or is this perhaps a VSFTPd thing and I could go bug that list?
To be clear,

c4.4: OpenSSL Behavior: handshakes/ nrpe, snmpd, et al.
Hello list, johnny, karanbir, rodrigo, william, all,
Looks like some changes in 4.4 with openssl behavior I thought to ask
about now that things have quieted down slightly since release.
I use openssl with my nagios nrpe plugins, and now am getting a "could not
complete SSL handshake". I will of course post to nagios list but first
want to find out from centos side some key info re:

Tripwire for CentOS
Hi,
I literally have about 36 machines running CentOS on a private network,
and will probably change the remaining 30 or so away from Whitebox or RH
in the near term.
One thing I just noticed was when I tried to search out Tripwire RPM's,
that none seemed evident.
Can anyone point me in the direction of an Tripwire RPM that works with
CentOS 4.3, or advise me on how to create one from the

cat cron jobs into crontab
Hi,
What's the best/safest way to "cat" the following job into crontab?
*/3 * * * * /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_megaraid_passive.sh >
/dev/null 2>&1
I am used to doing this manually via crontab -e, but now I simply have
too many centos servers to build in a given week (get to toss another
120K at some more 2U chenbro/tyan/amd64's -w000ooo).

Vsftpd & Iscsi - fast enough
To extend space on our 64-bit centos FTP servers, we are considering
setting them up to work with an existing PromiseRAID system via iscsi.
-just curious if anyone here knows if iScsi is fast enough to serve up
all the images?
-might it be something where we get dedicated cards and put the iScsi
traffic on its own Vlan?
Just curious if this would hold up under alot of traffic, like weather

OT: Measure 2U Server Amp Usage
Hi,
Running a bunch of CentOS servers on 2U supermicro equipment, usually with
8 drives on Adaptec SmartRAID V or LSI Megaraid.
In designing a rack in a data center, the question arises as to how to
measure the amperage the server uses, prior to investing in power drops
that actually do that for you, even remotely, for about $260.00-300USD per
unit. This number is the important one these days

kickstart - how do I specify I20_block driver
Hi,
I have alot of kickstart and scripting going on as I provision lots of
machines, and every now and then I run into a pesky machine or three
that's still got that Adeptec zero-channel RAID card sitting on the
board. Normally I like to rip it our and throw something more robust
in, but if it's a cache machine or whatever, I leave it in.
It makes my kickstart file useless until I

Time Change: Centos-immune?
hey all,
I perused my inbox looking for this subject, but not finding it,
-anything I need to keep my server farm of 60 centos servers (that all
run ntp) going smoothly during this next time change on March 11?
I noticed on the w2k side my IT staff have to do some scrambling, heh,
but that's expected.
Any action required?

Slightly OT: DNS -force client always use authoritative
Is there a specific way to set a name server so that clients are always
*forced* to use an autoritative name server?
UltraDNS and some others have mentioned little features they have, but
it only hints at the possibility that somewhere in the DNS spec.
