Getters and setters problem?
Hi list,
first evening of playing with rails, so please forgive me if I ask
something stupid. ;-)
I created a User model and tried to use ActiveRecord callbacks to
convert the password to sha1 just before saving it. For some reason
postgresql gives me a error because the given password is null. To
test even further I tried to change :login too, same error happens,
:login is empty too.
I am sure

calbacks on models
Hi, I''m having some strange behavior on callbacks when testing with
RSpec2. On my test, when I create a resource using the #create method
the callbacks related to #before_create are not called. If I go to the
console and I try to type the command Resource.create(client_uri:
"http://example.com") all works fine.
There are no mocks around, and I can''t understand if this

help with DRY violation
I''m trying to be a good rails developer and fix DRY violations as i find
them. However, i''m trying to fix this one, i cant seem to get it to work.
I have two tables A and B that have a one-to-one relationship. Table B
belongs_to Table A. Table A has_one Table B. I''m creating instances of
Table A in different places, depending on the controller. However, for each

How to write manage created_on and created_by via mixin?
Hi!
Definite newbie here - I''m working through this like-hate relationship with
Ruby and Rails right now... sometimes things work really well (like blobs
seem to rock) but other times, I dunno! :-)
Anyway, I''d like put in create and update user timestamps on all my primary
domain tables and allow them to be updated automatically by ActiveRecord.
Coming from Hibernate, I just

How should it be done?

Created_on and updated_on in a non-ActiveRecord model
Hi you all,
I have a model simulating an ActiveRecord model, according to the tips
stated in [1]. It is simulated because even though I am gonna save the
attributes in a file, not in a DB, I still want the validations made by
ActiveRecord::Base (see code below).
Well, the thing is that I also want the behaviour of the created_on and
updated_on columns, that get modified automatically before

When adding a record in console, a parameter comes in as null even when I set it
In console, I am trying to create a User but the :account_id does not come
in. Console just gives me back :account_id => nil. Obviously I''m trying to
set it though. Silly console...
But, I can set the account_id column in my controller like so:
@user = User.new(params[:user])
@user.account_id = account.id
@user.save
Here''s what I give to the controller:
User.create :name

ActiveRecord before_ callbacks question
Hi!
I need to set the primary key in a model and postgres table to something
different than id. View Edit and such works in the scaffolded
controller. However if I click in the controller below the list of data
onto New then I get an error message like this:
Showing app/views/admin/_form.rhtml where line #5 raised:

Where should I put "prerequisite logic"?
Hi there,
I have this model called InventoryItem. Every time an InventoryItem is
created (through the CharactersController and the create_item action) I
need to update others tables and make lookups in other tables, to check
if the Character has the prerequisites to actually create the
InventoryItem.
My problem is that I cannot seem to find a good place to put this logic.
I''ve tried to

lost in an ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid
I have an error I don''t know how to debug. I am adding the login
suport in Depot (the example in the RoR book) and
LoginController#add_user throws ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in an
innocent /login/add_user GET request.
The trace goes down to a call to SQLiteAdapter#table_structure, and
the source code suggests what''s happening is that "PRAGMA

initialising an instance variable on ActiveRecord creation
Hallo, I have a table like this:
create table properties(
id bigint unsigned not null auto_increment,
property_variable_stack_id bigint unsigned not null,
primary key(id),
foreign key (property_variable_stack_id) references
property_variable_stacks (id))
type=InnoDB;
Here you can see a reference to a table property_variable_stacks.

before_create is after_validatation :on => :create , when it should be before_validation :on => :create
In ActiveRecord''s callbacks, methods within a before_create callback
are called after the validation, but before the model is created.
This was an intentional design decision, but I think it was the wrong
one. What do you think?
When I think of before_create, I think of before_validation :foo, :on
=> :create, but, by default, before_create is synonymous with
after_validation :foo,

I am wondering why this works

self.created = Time.now

but this doesn''t

@created = Time.now

DB trigger vs before_create
Hello everyone,
I''m having trouble figuring out which approach is better.
I have the following tables: products, orders and line_items.
Every time an Order is placed, the quantity field in the products
table has to be updated for each LineItem in the Order. One option is
to use DB triggers which is not as portable as using before_create in
the Order model. But with before_create I cannot

Working around/with Restful Authentication
I''m using Restful Authentication, and the code to create a user is
pretty straight forward - there is a before_save action and a

But for some reason when I try to create a user programmatically in
the controller like this:

before_create question
I have the following models: User, Registration, Event.
User has_many Registration, Event has_many Registration, and
Registration belongs_to User and Registration. So far, so good.
There''s a registration deadline on a Event though, a few days before
the Event occurs.
So, I have this:
