Introduction
Hi,
I'm a 40-year old sysadmin living in Montpezat, a small village in the
sunny south of France. I'm a Linux user since 2001, when I made my first
steps on a 486 with a Slackware 7.1 CD. I've tried maybe two dozen
distributions, but I've stayed mostly with Slackware and Debian.
Since last summer, I work as a sysadmin for our "Communaut? de
Communes", a group of 16

Network configuration: desktop vs. laptop
Hi,
I'm just migrating some stuff from Slackware Linux to CentOS, and I have
a question about the orthodox way of configuring a network connection.
On a desktop or workstation, I usually get rid of NetworkManager:
# systemctl stop NetworkManager
# yum remove NetworkManager
Then I edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXXXX file
corresponding to my network interface. Here's

System freeze on laptop: power saving daemon doing harm?
Hi,
I have CentOS 4.3 installed on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D laptop
(Pentium IV 2.4 GHz CPU). Everything runs just fine, but I have one
problem. When I leave the machine unattended for something like an hour
or two, my desktop has "frozen". Unable to recovery anything, even
[Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Backspace] refuses to quit X, so I have to hard-reboot
by pressing PowerOn/Off for 10 seconds.

WPA question
HI
I admit up front that I know just enough about wireless networking to know
that I don't know much at all about it.
That said, I'm hoping someone can help me learn a little bit...
Specifically, could a laptop running Centos 5.1 be expected to (be able
to) connect to a wireless access point using WPA2 security settings?
I don't know if WPA depends on hardware support, or if

Between the early 1990's and early 2000's the price of a GB of memory went
from ~$100,000 to ~$1000*. I guess a lot of the design decisions made for
things like init were focussed on this. In 1995 is was common for server
platforms to have 32Mb ram whereas the kernel alone in my

[Bridge] Misbehaving bridge...
I'm trying to bridge a wired network and a wireless network, but I'm
having some trouble. No traffic seems to be passing through the
bridge. When I issue a "showmacs" command to brctl, I am able to see
MAC addresses from both networks. I am also able to ping both networks
from the bridge machine. When I issue a "showstp" command to brctl, the

New wireless controller
I just installed an Asus PCE-n13 wireless card into one of my CentOS 5.6 systems. It uses the RaLink 2680 chip set and I was able to get the driver loaded using modprobe rt2x00pci.ko. I saw no error and now see that the module is loaded along with mac80211 and other dependencies.
Now I need to know how to create the wlan0 device. I can find nothing via Google searches on how to create that

3.2 kernel with C5? Or ndiswrapper?
I know, I know... don't use the non-standard kernels unless you have to...
BUT: I have a D-Link N150 USB card.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0846:9030 NetGear, Inc. WNA1100 Wireless-N 150 [Atheros AR9271]
This isn't supported in C5, but it is supported in newer kernels (ath9k_htc).
So let's try NDISwrapper:
# rpm -i kmod\-ndiswrapper\-1.56\-1.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm

Fw: PDC/wins on multiple networks
Hi,
The pc that runs the samba server is my own property, it also dubs as router and dhcp server. I assign WINS server to the clients by dhcp using dnsmasq. I do not need or want to setup a domain. I just want to share files between the two networks using windows neighborhood and a workgroup, just like the clients would have been connected in the same network.
I have deleted the "remote

Addressing outgoing connections to a specific interface
On a CentOS 5.5 laptop (Dell Inspiron, dual boot with a Debian-based
distro) I have a cable plugged into eth0 which is on a LAN with no
internet connection. Additionally, I connect wirelessly on wlan0 to
the internet. Both connections have router on the 192.168.0.1
address.
Although I need to stay connected to the wireless router, can I still
access the address 192.168.0.1 on the wired
