apt-cacher for CentOS
Hi All, Is there something similar to apt-cacher available for CentOS? I would like to ensure that an application is only downloaded once to the network and not hundreds of times. If there isn't an equivalent, would someone please point me in the direction of how I might accomplish this with CentOS? -- James A. Slightly OT: Dual-booting two Linux dists
I'd like to set up a machine to dual-boot Ubuntu and CentOS5. Any problems foreseen with this? I'm mostly worried about disk labeling; they each need their own /boot and / filesystems. (Or do they need separate /boot partitions? Obviously there's an issue with boot.* and *.b and what System.map is symlink'd to, etc., but maybe there's a way to work around that.)

5.x install - loses display when launching anaconda
Hi all, Trying to install 5.0 or 5.1 (i386 or x86_64) on a new system from an install DVD. As soon as the installer launches anaconda, the screen shuts off and from this point I'm unable to switch to any other tty. This is an Intel core2duo machine on an Intel P35 chipset motherboard, Geforce 8400GS video card connected to a BenQ 20" widescreen LCD. Any ideas what could cause

nscd problem
Hi All, I just enabled nscd to see if I can speed up some operations on our large NFS/NIS environment, however, now that I've enabled nscd I am no longer able to sudo. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Everything was working fine prior to enabling it. -- James A. rate limiting question between two hosts
If I need to rate limit file transfers between to machines, what can I do at the host-level within CentOS, and what might I need to "yum install" in order to do? (For example, say I would like to rsync something, and then I would like to make sure that I don't exceed, say, 10 Mbs.)

CD emulation (a la daemontools)
I was wondering if anyone was aware of a method for mounting virtual CD devices with CD image files. I keep images (.CUE/.BIN pairs) of my CD collection on a NAS appliance tucked away in my closet. I'd like to write a script to mount each one, create ID tags, rip the tracks, then move along to the next one. I figure with a quad core opteron, it should be able to crank through them in a

Installing skype in CentOS 5
Having just upgraded my system from CentOS 4.4 to 5.0, I'm a bit disappointed that I still can't install skype from the skype repo using yum - when I try yum install skype, I end up with: libsigc++20-2.0.17-1.el5. 100% |=========================| 217 kB 00:13 ---> Package libsigc++20.i386 0:2.0.17-1.el5.rf set to be updated --> Running transaction check --> Processing

CentOS-5 - Suffering from LDAP experimentation
I was playing aeound with the GUI authentication configuration and was called away from my desk after I had configured the LDAP DC entries but before I had tried to start the ldap server or do much of anything else. When I returned the terminal session was screen-saver locked and entering my user password did not make it respond. I kept getting a time-out error. Rebooting took forever and was

I plan to allocate the space as follows swap 8G /boot 100M / 20G -- and remaining space to /data{1,2,3,N} (equal sizes) However after the installation and reboot, i got

CentOS5 Network Problems
I have a very odd problem connecting to some websites from my CentOS 5 box Target websites: www.connecttech.com www.3ware.com (two of my HW vendors) I can usually get some kind of response, but if the content (download or page itself) is larger in size (downloads never pass 100K), then it hangs... When I fire-up wireshark, I get a lot of ougoing highlighted Checksum Errored packets but I

OT: Scripting with sudo password
Completely off topic, but I'm sure someone out there is using scripts that require a sudo password of some sort, so I'll ask. What are people doing to automate tasks that required sudo passwords in order to run? sudo without a password is not an option for me, but I would like to be able to enter the password once have it saved and then read back when sudo is required. something

anyone using DBMail?
I am currently using Cyrus IMAPd, and been using it for a long time, the main reason being that I want an IMAP server with nice server-side filtering, which Cyrus provides via Sieve. Given that Sieve is integrated with Squirrelmail, all is good. Or is it? Cyrus IMAPd is powerful, but it's a complete mess to upgrade, either when upgrading the software per se, or when upgrading the whole

Issues installing x86_64 5.1 on Ultra 40
Hi all, we're trying to install CentOS 5.1 on a Sun Ultra 40. This is an AMD-powered machine and we're using the x86_64 version of CentOS 5.1. The machine is using the NVidia CK804 chipset and has SATA disks. It also has 16GB's of memory which prompted us to upgrade the BIOS on the machine from 1.1 to 1.6 per this (we also have the two quadro cards):

A rails CMS
A client has posed me the task of creating a CMS for a customer facing website using Ruby on Rails. Are there any such projects already underway? If not, is a basic CMS going to be too much for one developer to handle? (I can probably outsource a bit but the budget isn''t massive) The project is scheduled to last for 3 months and will probably involve some basic marketing pages,
