RJS Error: Element.update is not a function
Hi,
I have implemented some RJS code and I have the same exact code in 2
different places. In one place I get the error "Element.update is not
a function" and the other place works fine. Any idea why this error is
coming? Breaking my head.

Can't stop webrick with ctrl-c or ctrl-d on linux host
Hi All
I have setup a new dev system running LinuxMint 9 (Ubuntu 10.4). Running
ruby 1.9.2, rails 3.0, RVM etc.
One issue I have run into is that I can''t stop webrick with ctrl+c or ctrl+d
and killing the terminal always leaves a stranded ruby process.
Has anybody else run into this? Btw, webrick gets started by running "rails
s" in.
Also, ctrl+c works fine to stop a

Getting a dynamically generated elements dimensions
Ive posted this before, but unfortunately I still have yet to resolve
it after numerous attempts...
Here is the overview: populate a container element with some new html
using Element.update and then retrieve the new dimensions of the
containig element.
Here is a bit of code snippet that I would think should work.. but
doesn''t:

Problem with nvarchar in MS SQL Server 2000
Hello,
after putting ADO.rb into Directory
\ruby\lib\ruby\site_ruby\1.8\DBD\ADO\ I created a Rails-Application with
MS SQL Server 2000 as Database.
Everything works fine, but into the nvarchar-Field "notice" i can''t
store more than about 50 or 60 characters
MS SQL Server Query analyzer says, this field has a length of 510
characters.
What can i do to save up to the 510

Help, Gruff is killing me
Hi all,
I hope somebody can help me out here, since the issue has been killing
me for the last three days. Here is the issue:
It seems that gruff kills rails/webrick whenever it''s used on win32. I
installed gruff per instructions and it seems to be working. The
sample controller generates a nice grpah with send_data and all. The
issue started once I try to use any other

Question on application/database design for a application port to rails
Hi all
I am hoping that the experience and knowledge of this ''list'' will be
able to help me out with some design decisions I have to make while
porting a desktop app to rails.
Here is the scoop:
I am in the design process of porting a fairly large client/server app
to rails. Average data set is about 200 MB per database/server.
Altogether there are about 100 tables and about

Give form elements "fieldWithErrors" class in non-std. way?
All,
I want to know how to force an element of my model to be invalid, but
not generate any message for it, so that the corresponding form field on
a form will show up with the ''fieldWithErrors'' class.
I have some checkboxes on my RHTML form, and they are generated with
this code
<%= check_box_tag("current_job[target_list_ids][]"...etc. %>

O/T div.fieldWithErrors styling
this is kinda trivial but I''m anal and it bugs me :)
whenever there''s a error in the form the error field is wrapped with
<div class="fieldWithErrors"> </div>
this throws my form''s styling off because it puts too much space b/t
fields and worse makes the form as wide as possible. How do I fix
this? I''ve tried
div.fieldWithErrors {

css style fieldWithErrors when using tables
I''ve run across something that I''m not sure how to fix. This is with
MSIE, Firefox doesn''t seem to have the same problem.
When rails displays form fields in error using the css element
fieldWithErrors, and the form field is enclosed in a table data tag,
the entire background of the table data element is set to red instead
of just the border of the form element.

Changing default behavior of fieldWithErrors
Hi!
The topic can be a bit misleading, because it may suggest that i want to
change css style.
What i''d like to change is that normally, when there''s an error, rails
creates a div element with the fieldWithErrors class as the parent of
the input. I''d like to change this behavior, so the input element itself
will have this class added to its current classes and

Why is there no Smalltalk-like IDE for Ruby?
I posted this to comp.lang.ruby and comp.lang.smalltalk, and my blog.
I will likely get destroyed, but it will be worth it if at least one
nugget of information helps the Ruby IDE makers.
-----------------------------------------
Hi all --
I shout my question to the entire Ruby + Smalltalk community: Smalltalk
has had amazing IDEs for decades, why not Ruby? Smalltalkers, Ruby
needs your help!

Custom forms and fieldWithErrors tags
Hi,
(probably) A newbie questions:
I have a form where a user can choose an email address, but there are only
some choices for the domain, so I wrote a helper where the local part of the
email is a text field and the domains is a dropdown list, like:
Select Email: [ my_name ] @ <domain.com>
..which I defined as a helper:
def email_form(tagname, domain_list)

Displaying validates_acceptance_of Errors In A Check Box
Hello,
I am having trouble displaying a check box which must be checked but
hasn''t been. I would like it to be highlighted as in a scaffolded
view but the hidden check box field which is generated by the
check_box helper is also highlighted, and the text next to it loses
its styling.
My code follows. Should I get cleverer with the CSS or write my own
check_box helper which
