Timezone abbreviation question
Is it possible to get timezone abbreviations using the TimeZone or TzinfoTimezone classes? Even after converting UTC to localtime it still reports the timezone abbreviation as UTC. Example: >> @tz = TzinfoTimezone.us_zones[2] => #<TzinfoTimezone:0x30868a0 @utc_offset=-28800, @name="Pacific Time (US & Canada)"> >> @tz.now => Wed Jan 24 12:36:56 UTC 2007

get timezone abbreviation
This is probably more a Ruby than a rails question, but when I call the method strftime("%Z") on a Time object, it returns the full time zone name "Eastern Daylight Time". Is there a way to get the Abbreviation instead?

Can duplicate "back" browser function in Rails?
In Rails I have a DB Table index.html.erb view. It has 100''s of items. When I gen via scaffold I get index, show, edit, update, etc view. But when I page down several pages, use the "show" link and then the "back" link I do not go back to where I was on the index view. Instead, I go back to the TOP of the index not the place where I clicked on the "show"

Unexpected behavior with abbreviation of an argument to paste
R 2.15.1 OS X Colleagues, I encountered the following unexpected behavior today: The following command yielded the expected result: paste(c("TEXT1", "TEXT2"), collapse="|") Result: [1] "TEXT1|TEXT2" However, abbreviating "collapse" by even one character: paste(c("TEXT1", "TEXT2"), collaps="|") yielded the

Timezone and date
When I do the date +%Z I get the timezone. Which currently is EDT. I am sending information to another system, that says EDT is not a valid timezone. I have no way to modify the other system. My question is - is there a way to get the non-day-lite savings time zone ? For example EST is valid - EDT is not. Just curious if there is an easy way already present to get a standard time zone. Thanks,

Getting a Time Zone abbreviation from the full name?
There''s got to be an easier way... I am building an event manager and as part of it, the user selects the time zone of the event from a drop-down list using the time_zone_select helper. This is stored in the events table as a string. Because of legacy data which is stored in UTC, I want to keep the dates and times in the table as UTC but when I display it, I want to show the abbreviated

Change state names to abbreviations in an irregular list of names, abbreviations, null values, and foreign provinces
I'm trying to create maps of reptile abundance in different states & counties using data from Herp.net, which provides lists of specimens with the places that they were found. First I would like to parse the list by state using 2-letter abbreviations, since I'm focusing on certain regions. To do this, I've been trying to create a vector (state2) that gives all state names as
