Git, Capistrano, Passenger, and Apache Questions
First, I''m trying to do the legwork with utilizing all 4 together
because many people say it''s a good combination to use. I already have
apache setup (was using it with the PHP version of my site formerly).
I''ve installed all gems and dependencies that I need on my slice (using
slicehost).
I have a fully pushed git repository (master) on github (private git)

Best Linux Distro for Rails App?
After a bad experience trying to get even the simplest Rails
application running at Lunarpages, I''m moving to Slicehost. Does
anyone have an opinion as to which of their Linux distros to use for a
fairly high-traffic Rails site? They offer CentOS, Debian 5, Fedora
(10 to 12), Gentoo, Red Hat EL 5, and Ubuntu (8 and 9).
While we''re on the subject, does anyone have any opinions as

Rails Hosting: Slicehost vs. Rimuhosting
I know similar topics have been covered before, but I''d like to get a
more up-to-date Ruby developer''s opinions. (Please note that I''ve
read similar threads in this group and read a lot of hosting
comparison sites, even contacted both companies and am still having a
hard time making decisions. )
After reading about limitations with shared hosting plans, I decided

Premature end of script headers error using Rails 2.3.1 and Passenger 2.1.1
I''m getting an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error using the latest beta of
Rails (2.3.1 aka 2.3 RC2) and Passenger (2.1.1) beta under Ubuntu
Intrepid (8.1).
I''ve put the Passenger configuration files into two separate files
under mods-available and I''ve created symbolic links from mods-
enabled. The default way of the Apache configuration under Ubuntu 8.1,

Foreman reports - no pretty pictures :D
I''m playing around with foreman for the moment. I can''t seem to figure
out how to make the dashboard look like in this screenshot
http://theforeman.org/wiki/foreman/Screenshots#Dashboard
In order for those statistics to work what should be done?
I have activated the rrdgraph reports in puppetd, uncommented the line
":rrd_report_url: report/" in config/settings.yaml

Installing Rails
Having a god-awful time installing Rails. I started with the
instructions found on this page:

The title says it all - please bear with me. To let you know where I
stand, I have been working for up to 12 hours a day for 2 months and 2
weeks trying to get my site ready for release. In development (on
windows) it works perfectly. In production (on linux ubuntu) it does
not.
I stopped using capistrano because there are problems with the repo on
github and things aren''t working

Ruby and MySQL backup
I suspect this is not exactly a Ruby/Rails topic but I also suspect
that lots of people here have already solved this issue. We have a
simple app running on a SliceHost slice and we''d like to backup the
database both hourly and daily to an AWS S3 account.
I''ve looked around but surprisingly can''t seem to find anything that
offers a complete solution for doing this. I was

Kernel oops when running bonnie++ on btrfs
I wanted to see how btrfs compares to other filesystems so I have been
running bonnie++ on it. While the results are good(much faster then
ext2) every once in awhile I get a kernel oops. I am testing on xubuntu
8.10 with the 2.6.27-7-686 kernel using the latest git sources. Most of the
time the oops happens within 20min of running bonnie++ but sometimes it
takes a few hours. This happens with and

Too many methods in the model? Extra lightweight logic layer?
Hi,
Given the convention of fat models to handle business logic, is there
a point where you might be justified in using a separate plain ruby
object(s) to orchestrate certain business logic interactions,
essentially a middle layer between your controllers and models for
high level functions?
If you look at the InventoryTransaction model below you will see the
sort of methods I mean. In this case

Fw: Re: What packages ubuntu-xen-server & ubuntu-xen-desktop are up to on intrepid
I have installed Ubuntu Intrepid Server on bare metal and successfully ran:-
# apt-get install ubuntu-xen-server.
It installed several packages on system . Now i can see files
/boot/xen-3.3.gz, /etc/init.d/xend, /etc/init.d/xendomains, but no
xenified kernel gets in. Attempt to use vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-server, obviously , fails with system panic.
I do remember recompiling procedure for Xen

Wine 1.1.7: Sound regression?
I have recently formatted my system in order to install Intrepid Ibex, and I am now using it with Wine 1.1.7. I did a backup of the prefixes of the games I was using in Hardy / Wine up to 1.1.5, and imported them in my new installment. The games work normally, but the sound is crackling all the time for each of them; something which was not happening in my former installment. I have not noticed

xen 3.3.0 + intrepid domU (2.6.27-7-server) + >4gb ram problem
Hi,
we''re using Xen 3.3.0 on Debian Etch with 2.6.18.8 kernel from xen.org
on dom0. We have problems starting Intrepid domU (using Intrepid''s
kernel 2.6.27-7-server) if we give more than 4GB of memory to this domain.
Using memory = ''4096'' works perfectly, but changing it to ''4097'' already
gives an error. Can anyone put some light on this?

Strange memory issue
Like most, I have a test and a production env. Both are CentOS 5, Ruby
1.8.6, Rails 2.0.2, MySQL 5, and Apache. Both were setup using the
same procedure. Except for the hardware (test: Intel, prod: AMD) and
memory (test: 512M, prod: 1G), both systems are essentially the same
right down to the Rails env. Unfortunately, memory usage is very
different for each.
The test system has 2 mongrel
