Associated child records not created on creation of a parent.
I am trying to create a record with association. Within the create
method, I would also like to pre-populate dependent (has_many) records
from a template in the database.
The child records are <u>mysteriously rolled back </u> if I insert
them in a loop. If I try to insert a single child record, it works.I
have read the books and tried to google my way out of this but am at a

has_many validation the Rails way
Okay, this is something I run into a lot and don''t really have a great
solution. Here is a simple example:
class Blog < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :posts
validates_presence_of :name
end
class Post < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :blog
validates_presence_of :name
validates_presence_of :blog_id
end
Now, if I want to create a blog and post at the same time I

RESTful nested resources and polymorphism?
With ref to my previous post: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/180356
I am now able to access items from topics controller. However, now I
need to add sub-item e.g.: An item itself could have many sub-items. So
my items model is like:
class Item < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_uniqueness_of :title, :scope => [:topic_id]
validates_presence_of :topic_id, :title, :owner, :position

Validating an ActiveRecord object and its has_many :through associations
Considering an object with several has_many :through => associations,
what is the ''best'' way to handle validations?
As an example:
class Student < ActiveRecord::Base
# some attrbutes like
# :name
# :grade
# relationships
has_many :students_assignment, :dependent => :destroy
has_many :assignments, :through => :students_assignment

Nested forms and deleting/removing has_many associations
I am using nested forms on person model that has many pictures.
I would like to allow the user to remove on or more of the associated
pictures from the person using nested forms as suggested by Ryan Bates.
However delete will delete the picture not remove the associatioon
I can do it in the controller, but it should be done in the same way as
delete is performed using attribute _delete

Saving an upload
I am creating a database for movies (films) and television shows (shows)
that will have has_and_belongs_to_many relationships with the pictures

filename character varying NOT NULL,
content_type character varying NOT NULL,
primary key (id)

rails 2.3 nested forms with has_many through checkboxes
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to combine the new nested
forms in rails 2.3 with a has_many through relationship via
checkboxes. Basically I have a page model, a page_category model and
a category_items join table. Pages have many page categories through
category items. The category_items table is polymorphic so i can use
it for other models who need categories (maybe this is

Validation Through Multiple Models from one Form
Hey All,
I have a form that submits data to multiple models.
I have
class Man < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :notes
has_many :contacts
validates_associated :contacts, :notes
validates_presence_of :first_name
validates_presence_of :last_name
class Contact < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :man
validates_presence_of :contact_info
class Note < ActiveRecord::Base

Change to has_many :through associations
Hi everyone. I''ve made a default change to has_many :through
associations that I felt was important to make before they''re
released. This is after some tickets and confusion I''ve seen
regarding has_many :through.
class Connection < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :user
belongs_to :channel
end
class Channel < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :connections

nested has_many associations
My question is whether the rails helper methods for handling associations can
be nested (see examples below). I suspect not as currently I''m
getting "unknown method" if I try and use two associations in one call.
The essence of the code is
class User << ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :items
class Items << ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :reservations
belongs_to

Manipulating has_many :through associations
Hi,
I haven''t done any associations before, so please forgive my incorrect
use of terminology...
If I set up a has_many :through association, can I manipulate the
associated instances directly (like an Array), or do I need to
manipulate the join model?
For example, suppose I have two classes and the associated join model:
class foo
has_many :foo_bars
has_many :bars, :through

question about saving associations when using has_many :through
I''ve got a User model and a Book model. A user is required to submit
books each month to be reviewed by other users. I have the following
relationships defined:
# the join model
book_review.rb
belongs_to :user
belongs_to :book
end
book.rb
# each book is reviewed by many users. This allows us to get the BookReview
# objects associated with this book
has_many :book_reviews,

Forms with associations and collections
Hi
Does anyone have a good pattern for using a sinlge form for a model
with multiple associations including some has_many''s?
For example I have a Property model with a has_one association an
Address model and a has_many association to a Highlight model. I would
like to update these all on the same page however if I render the main
Property form, then use a partial for the address and

CRUD, REST and associations
Let''s say I have the model class Reader and Magazine, connected by join
model Subscription. It looks something like this
class Reader < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :subscriptions, :dependent => :delete_all
has_many :magazines, :through => :subscriptions
validates_presence_of :name
end
class Magazine < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :subscriptions, :dependent =>

building and saving has_many and has_one relations
Hi,
I am very confused about an aspect of has_one and has_many relations,
with regard to using the build method, and saving the belongs_to side.
It''s a somewhat long post. so please bear with me :)
First let''s consider the has_one scenario. Let''s say I have a student
who must own exactly one car:
class Student
has_one(:car)
end
class Car
belongs_to(:student)

New Technique: Subsets of has_many Associations
I just now thought of this, and sure enough it works like a charm (at
least so far in my limited testing):
has_many :events, :dependent => :delete_all
has_many :upcoming_events, :class_name => "Event", :conditions =>
"date > NOW()"
The purpose of this is that it makes eager loading of subsets of
associations possible without replacing all the magic of the

Validation with has_many
I have two problems. I have a comment that has_many uploads. Before
saving the comment, I want to be sure that the upload(s) has passed
validation, but I also need to validate in other ways. For example, I
do not want to save the comment if there is no comment or upload. Or, I
do not want to save the comment if the image has been uploaded
previously (comparing md5s with past upload md5s

ActiveLdap belongs_to and has_many associations
Hi,
I am trying to use ActiveLdap for authentication in my rails app. But I
am running into a problem with the "belongs_to" and "has_many"
associations.
Here ist how my models look like.
class Person < ActiveLdap::Base

:prefix => "ou=People",

nested forms: use validate :some_method works in update mode only
I have a strange behavior when validating a record in a nested form. The
association collection is empty when creating a new record and the
validation does not catch the error. But when updating the same record the
validation gets it right but continues to catch the error even after
modifying the needed attribute value to make it pass.
Here is the model:
#timesheet.rb
class Timesheet <
