Re: Some advice on DB modeling
I have more or less the same problem. I''m trying to build a system where users can enter their friends. But the solutions seems not to work for me. I used same sql: CREATE TABLE `friends` ( `user_id` int(11) NOT NULL default ''0'', `friend_id` int(11) NOT NULL default ''0'', KEY `user_id` (`user_id`), KEY `friend_id` (`friend_id`),

table that have many-to-may relationship to itself
In a social netowrk data model, users belongs other users, and can have many friends as users, so it is a many to many relatioship. the class definition could be class User < ApplicationController has_mang_ang_belongs_to users But how it looks like in the mysql database tables in a "joined" users table. The question really is: what is the table looks like when a model has

has_many :trough with 2x the same table
I have a site where Users can become Friends with other Users. I used to do this with a habtm, but of course I want to stay up-to-date and convert this to a has_many :trough. Unfortunately I can''t get it to work.. the documentation on this feature is a bit sparse at the moment. This is my old habtm: has_and_belongs_to_many :friends, :join_table => ''user_friends'',

Self-referencial habtm relationship
Heyo! I am setting up a self-referencial habtm relationship with the users of my app. I am using Chad Fowler''s "Rails Recipes" to get me started, and everything works great with the join table "people_friends". I add friends by doing somebody.friends << somebodyelse. However, with my app, there is an approval process so my join table has columns person_id,

2 belongs_to to the same parent table
Hello! I have 2 table: users and buddies User: id, name, ... Buddy: id, user_id, user_buddy_id, ... So if you have 2 users 1,jack and 2,fred and fred is a buddy of jack, there is a Buddy object: id=1, user_id=1, user_buddy_id=2 I can declare only one belongs_to in Buddy and one has_many in User. And there is conflict if I had the second one (the first one is discarded) class User has_many

HABTM association with own class?
If I have a class, Asset, which has and belongs to many associated Asset objects, how do I do this? has_and_belongs_to_many :associated_assets, :class => "Asset", :foreign_key => ?????, :association_foreign_key => ????? Right now, my table has a :first_asset_id and a :second_asset_id, but I don''t see how the objects themselves are supposed to distinguish one from the

Self-Referential Many-To-Many relationships where the relationship itself has data.
Trying to model a bunch of users that have friends that are other users. clearly a job for has_and_belongs_to_many, but the trick is, they have ratings for their friends. I have gone through the Rails Recipes book, and it seems like I''m trying to combine the self-referential many-to-many recipe (12) and the many to many relationships where the relationship itself has data recipe (16). So

Self-referential has_many :through relationship
Hi, I have a self-referential has_many :through relationship setup to track relationships between users. Basically relationships are modeled as a join table with an extra column ''relation''. create table relationships ( user_id integer unsigned not null, friend_id integer unsigned not null, relation char(1) not null, ) --- relations --- f = friend r = request to

I would query the whole result set first, then move my friends to the top, but the thing is, Im paginating my results and use the offset and limit parameters in the multi_search() function. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance... -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Bi-directional self-referential HABTM
Hi, I''m having a little trouble figuring out how to make a self- referential HABTM bi-directional. I have a Employee class. Each employee can have a couple of bosses, who are also employees. The employee class has the following HABTM: has_and_belongs_to_many :bosses, :class_name => "Employee", :join_table => "bosses_courses", :association_foreign_key =>

Self-referential join model does not work
I have been trying to model a labeled graph using ActiveRecord (trunk version). Basically, I have a ''Node'' model which represents a node linking to other nodes. Links (aka edges) are labeled (i.e., have a ''label'' attribute and other behavior). Thus I decided to model edges as an ''Edge'' model and use a ''has_many :trough''

has_many :through and foreign key parameters
I just took my HABTM and turned it into a :through since my join table has another "non-joiny" attribute. I went from this: has_many_and_belongs_to :jobs, :join_table => ''tablename'', :foreign_key => ''x'', :association_foreign_key => ''y'' to this: has_many :jobs, :through =>

Concatenated key
Hi all, I started playing a couple days ago with Rails and it find it very interesting. But I''m a bit stuck with making it work with a concatenated primary key. I want to use my own names for the DB fields and I''m using SQL Server 2005. My tables look roughly like this: CREATE TABLE USERS ( USR_ID VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, USR_PASS VARCHAR(25) ) CREATE TABLE

Member.buddies.sort >> undefined method `<=>''
Hi all I have a model Member that has a habtm relationship to buddies (also members). Now I wanted to sort them using sort, but this ends in an error "undefined method <=>"! Where''s the problem here? Sorry, I''m still beginning to learn Ruby. ;-) Thanks Josh -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Select updates database?
I am running on Rails 2.2.2 on Solaris (and also on my mac) against mysql. For some reason, when I use a select in the partial, the database does not get updated with the changed value. I am using checkbox for other fields which works perfectly. I can provide more information if needed, but I would like the field to work as a dropdown instead of a text field. My Model:
