find_by_ issue
In the Agile RoR book, page 219 (softcover version) they talk about the
fact you can use the methods: find_by_ and find_all_by_ and fill in the
last piece with a valid column name.
So I have a database table called "parts" and the following columns:
id
partname
partnumber
vendor
I do the following:
(connection to DB already established)
class Part < ActiveRecord::Base

AR's find_by_* limits return results. How to avoid id?
When I use find_by_name method I get LIMIT 1 result.
> SELECT "users".* FROM "users" WHERE "users"."age" = 25 LIMIT 1
But the "age" column is not unique in my table and its value may repeat.
So I expect that an array of records where "age" is 25 will be returned.
But AR limits the query by 1.
How to avoid it? Or is it the default

Best practice to manage ''id'' hacking?
In my app, a user logs in [via the login generator] and has access to
details of his account, and transactions attached to his account.
This is achieved in the standard rail manner by passing the account id
or transaction id between the controller and the view.
But what is to stop someone hacking the URL or view html to access
another account id or transaction id ?
eg /account/show/46 becomes

NewB questions
Hi,
A project came up that has made me realize that it''s time to learn RoR.
I''ve got everything up and running (Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 2.1, MySQL 5,
Webrick) and am using Aptana with RadRails for development. I''ve
installed the "recipes" demo application and have been poking around for
the past couple of hours, and now I have a few questions about how
things work:

find_by_email dynamic method returning new
Hello everyone,
I have a rails app which uses email as login name. At some point, I
have to search the user, in the User model by email. For some reason,
the method User.find_by_email(email) returns nil, even though the user
is in the database.
The same applies for any find_by_* method that searches by any
database column. I was able to find the user using the User.find
Does anyone have an idea

how does rails do this "find_by_?"
Hello there,
I''m wondering how do they create functions on the fly?
find_by_any_column_name ??
I want to do something similar with my models, but I don''t really know
how to do it?
user_current_nickname
user_current_id
user_current_role
etc.?

Jamal

Mutliple sets of data in one dataset....Need a loop?
Hi
I'm hoping someone can help me I am a relative newbie to R.
I have data that is in a similar format to this...
Experiment Score1 Score2
X -0.85 -0.02
X -1.21 -0.02
X 1.05 0.09
Y -1.12 -0.07
Y -0.27 -0.07
Y -0.93 -0.08
Z 1.1 -0.03
Z 2.4 0.09
Z -1.0 0.09
Now I can easily have a look at the overall correlation of score 1 and 2 by
doing this
plot(data[,2], data[,3]) or
fit <-

mutliple default routes, rp_filter and martians
I have a theory on the cause of a problem but it is still only a theory.
I wonder if anyone here can confirm.
I have a multi-isp configuration with a multi-path default route to each
ISP, equally weighted.
I am seeing, periodically, traffic dropped due to martian detection and
errors logged on inbound traffic, but at other times, that same exact
traffic will be allowed, no errors.

Mutliple backups into a signle dir
Hello.
I am trying to make use of rsync for backup purposes. I want to use it with
the -b switch: it renames older FILE to FILE~ instead of replacing it with
the newer version. This way, only the newest and the second most recent
versions of a file are saved. I want to have more versions.
One approach to this can be inpired by --backup-dir operation. I'd
rather extend the backup

Which IP adresses are registered when having mutliple interfaces
Hi!
I'm running Samba 1.9.18p7 on a machine with two interfaces, so I configured:
; multiple interfaces
interfaces =x.y.z.7/255.255.0.0 a.b.c.d/255.255.0.0
; paranoia setting: to be REALLY sure which host name samba uses as NETBIOS name
netbios name = XYZ001
This one has to register with a WINS server on one of the nets, so I configured:
; be a WINS client
wins

Mutliple Line 'Buttons'
New to Asterisk's and loving it so far.
Does anyone know of any functionality in Asterisk's (or more so
phones) that allows line numbers to be lit up like a switch board on a
phone?
So that someone can page another person with 'call on line 3'. I'm
not really a telco guy and are still learning terminology for things.
Any idea's?

All combinations possible in a mutliple regression
Hi,
I want to use four independent variables to predict the output of one
dependent variable using a linear model lm. I want to compare all possible
combinations of the 4 independent variables, including singles, pairs and
triples.
I was thinking of using the AIC test to compare all models and pick the best
one.
The model looks like this :
lm(Y ~ X1 + X2 + X3 + X4)
Thanks for your help

Default Test library
Along the same lines as the default javascript library discussion [1],
why don''t we switch the default test library to RSpec? The stats [2]
posted by Xaviar in the other thread seem to support that RSpec is the
preferred way to test.

mutliple ISP's cont.
Hi Paul,
thanks for your answers.
> 3 DSL (ppp0,ppp1,ppp2) providers from the same ISP. (which means they have
> the same gateway, but different static ISP''s)
Do they actually have the same peer address?
The connection is pppoe, the gateway is assigned by the ISP and the 3 ADSL
connections next hop is to the same Router at the ISP.
The gateway is the same for all 3 connections

What I Want For Christmas
Calling All Mongrel Minions!
I wanna have some fun and would like this as a Christmas present. The site http://www.workingwithrails.com/ has this lame popularity system that''s kind of irking some of the main Ruby contributors. I think it''s kind of funny, but would like to demonstrate what an army of motivated people can do to these kinds of popularity contests.
So, as a

ActiveRecord 'find_or_initialize_by' dynamic finder bug? Ignoring conditions.
Hello all,
I just ran into something that I think is a bug, and I would like to
confirm with the core team whether this is expected/desired behavior
or if this is a bug that I should file and develop failing tests for
(I doubt I have the active record method_missing fu to actually patch
it).
Test Scenario:
I would like to find or initialize a new user and base the find on the
users email

When should you restart a ruby server?
Hello everyone,
While walking through AWDWR, Task D: Add a Dash of AJAX, I was
initially unable to let the AJAX magic work. Hitting the Add to Cart
button doesn''t yield to any output on its own; I had to manually
refresh the pages to witness the change. But when I tried to restart
the ruby server, and load the application again, everything worked
fine.
Any explanations to behavior
