postfix tightening
I am used to sendmail and am using Postfix now and am uncertain of some features. I typically would comment out the line in sendmail.mc that went something like 'accept unresolvable domains' I tried using smtpd_sender_restrictions = reject_unverified_sender reject_unverified_smtp and this seems a bit too restrictive and got some bounces on legitimate senders so I'm

Wine registration email - system failure
To whom it may concern I tried to register, but I received no email. Tried anther email address - again no email. In both cases the wine forum sys had registered me, but without the confirmation email, I couldn't get on. I then created a yahoo web email - and this worked. So the sys can send to web accounts but evidently not to pop accounts.

VOIP Spam
Hi, Some people have suggested maintaining black lists and white lists to avoid spammers and allow legitimate callers into the network. However, the problem with this method is that the spammer's IP address might change due to DHCP. Today a spammer might get aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd and lets say that I put this address in my blacklist. To my annoyance, tomorrow a legitimate caller might get

Dealing with brute force attacks
Over the weekend one of our servers at a remote location was hammered by an IP originating in mainland China. This attack was only noteworthy in that it attempted to connect to our pop3 service. We have long had an IP throttle on ssh connections to discourage this sort of thing. But I had not considered the possibility that other services were equally at risk. Researching this on the web does

Centos 6 Sendmail backup MX Config
Hi All, I'm just wanting to check that my understanding of the settings is correct as my web searches are finding a lot of dated information. If I want a Centos 6 sendmail system act as the secondary MX for domain bbbbb.co.uk do I just add a Connect:bbbbb.co.uk RELAY statement into /etc/mail/access and restart sendmail Obviously I have the DNS MX records for the domain are

SMTP external forward
I read several posts about SMTP being blocked at ISP. My ISP has the same limitation. My ADSL connection (1 fixed IP) only permits outbound connection to port 25 to their server. None of those posts answered my need. I tried FAQ also. I have several internal email clients/bots that needs to retrieve/send messages, some of then are notebooks. It''s not fair to change SMTP server to the

Spam to this list
Hi, I'm not sure what the policy of this list is and I bet everyone has a spam filter, so nobody might have noticed, but we got spammed. Can anyone send mail to the list or do you have to subscribe first ? -- dag wieers, dag@wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [all I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power]

Is Enum safe from spammers?
Just been contacted by a UK Enum registrar looking for ITSPs to become resellers of their Enum registration systems ... Is anyone using Enum? Does anyone (other than cynical old me) think that Enum is a spammers best friend? Has anyone received a spam VoIP call yet? (ie. one placed directly over the Internet aimed at a SIP URI to a PBX which allows anonymous incoming calls?) I can see that

OT: fail2ban, spam and mail servers
Many of you are interested in and have used or recommended fail2ban for your linux boxes. I finally installed it on our FreeBSD server (no asterisk, hence the OT) with the help of a friend from the VoIP Users Conference and Asterisk community. After a lot of new learning about regex, I extended the actions and filters to look at our mail server, plagued by spammers - who isn't? Our server has

Banned web site / banned topic ?
Why are you replacing known spammers with these "banned" strings ? This forbids anti-spam filters & programs to do their jobs properly.

blackmail attempt? Stable mailing list block?
I got some weird mail back, claiming that my e-mail was blocked, w/o indicating what server was blocked, after the mail appeared in the mailing list. Is this some BS shakedown? I use postfix on a DSL line forwarding to earthlink, this is hardly something that should be rare in the BSD world... the mail appeared to come from a web mail server and the first link has the following lovely text:

Feature request: usernames and passwords
A relatively recent development that spammers got wind of is users that have username==password, with/without the domain. I am tracking numerous 1-off attempts from bots to gain access to mailboxes this way. Situation isn't made any better if you're also using dovecot as SMTP AUTH provider for I am ashamed to admit I've relayed some spam that way. Would it be possible to deny login

Sendmail novrfy filter by ip address?
I have a virus and spam filter device that can do VRFY commands to reject invalid email before it gets to the next mail hop. How can I configure the SMTP server to only allow VRFY commands from one particular IP address, and nowhere else? I don't want spammers to be able to hammer on the gateway looking for valid addresses to send to.
