Apache22+mod_proxy+mongrel+ssl
I am trying to move a Rails application, that uses SSL, from an Apache/FastCGI stack, that works fine, to Apache22 and mongrel working with a single mongrel instance (i.e., not mongrel cluster, yet.) I have a single mongrel instance demonized and working fine on http, on port 3000. Apache/OpenSSL/certs working fine. Here is my test http.conf (deliberately kept as simple as possible):

properly restarting mongrel instances
Hi folks. Using mongrel_rails and the mongrel_cluster capistrano recipes, I often encounter a situation where some of the mongrel processes don''t die in time to be restarted. The output of capistrano will tell me something like "mongrel on port 8001 is already up", but that''s only because capistrano/mongrel_rails failed to take it down in the first place. The solution

Newbie Q: "user" variable in every view?
Newbie to RoR -- as a long time Java Struts/etc. guy it is an awesome tool! I have implemented some basic login/session stuff with the help of a great tutorial, props to the author ( http://www.aidanf.net/rails_user_authentication_tutorial). I have a trivial instance method in ApplicationController, which just grabs the User object from the session. def current_user session[:user] end

Why is there no Smalltalk-like IDE for Ruby?
I posted this to comp.lang.ruby and comp.lang.smalltalk, and my blog. I will likely get destroyed, but it will be worth it if at least one nugget of information helps the Ruby IDE makers. ----------------------------------------- Hi all -- I shout my question to the entire Ruby + Smalltalk community: Smalltalk has had amazing IDEs for decades, why not Ruby? Smalltalkers, Ruby needs your help!

R GUI considerations (was: R, Wine, and multi-threadedness)
Hello, Following a discussion initiated on r-devel, that mentions SciViews-R and other GUIs issues for R, I would like to make comments (and would be happy if these comments would initiate interesting initiatives). A big, big problem with SciViews-R is that a part of it is written in Visual Basic 6, a M$$$$ language, not supported any more, buggy, non transposable to other platforms, etc,

Rails sessions working intermittently in IE7
Hello, We are developing in Rails 2.1.0 and serving the files with mongrels behind Apache. We are using SqlSessionStore. Recently I noticed that when logging into our site using IE7 the session doesn''t persist in some situations, and persists when it shouldn''t. For instance when I log in my info is maintained when visiting certain pages, but disappears on others. The info never

text_field_with_auto_complete
I need to pass a parameter in my text_field_with_auto_complete and am struggling to discover how to do this. I have something like this: <%= text_field_with_auto_complete ''user'', ''username'', {}, {:with => "''post=''@company_title.id"} %> but because it is in a partial that pops as a result from a remote_function_tag, I am

the value in text_field helper
I have been working on this small, minute, part on my project and it all hinges on setting the value in a text_field helper. Saying: <%= text_field ''user'', ''company'', :value => @login %> does not do it. When I go and look at the raw html, there is no value there and "value" is an attribute of the input tag, im pretty sure. I really like

Rails app settings for GoDaddy

I read an article that I got from this forum about how to properly set-up my account, but after following those direction I still get nothing to work. Just wondering if there is anyone out there that can point me to other resources to get me started or if anyone has any suggestions on what to try next. The

TextMate for Rails development -- why?
Greetings, I am curious, I see quite a few references to using TextMate for rails development. I downloaded TextMate and used it for 30 days. I do not see what everyone is raving about. Snipplets are nice, but other editors do the same thing, some with much more power. Can anyone tell me what makes people draw to TextMate? Maybe I am missing the whole reason, I''d really like to

Character limit for text field
I was just wondering if there is a way to limit the number of characters that can be entered in a textfield? Here is what I have for a helper: <%= text_area ''user'', ''rentalcar_comments'', :size => "69x4" %> I am describing a size but I need it to only allow a certain number of characters and no more. Is that possible or am I going to have to

Code Shopping in Rails
Back in the horse-and-buggy days when I was cutting my OO eye teeth on Smalltalk, we had a LOT of conversations about the biggest problem dealing with a large and growing set of classes and methods in the Smalltalk image. It became clear that most, if not all, successful Smalltalk coders spent a lot of their time code-shopping, i.e., looking for a class or method that did something they

Smalltalk binding to R
Hi - any person interested in building a binding between Smalltalk and R, please contact myself or Hernan. Acts_as_authenticated
Hello I have been trying a number of security/login generators recently. My favourite so far is the Acts_as_authenticated. I like the fact that it is only billed as a starting point and doesn''t try to do everything. I would like to add security roles to it, so that some of my controller actions can only be used by an admin role. Has anybody implemented this using
