Newbie stuff (.new method)
Hi- Ruby 1.8.2 Rails 1.1 so I''m trying to build my first rails app and I''m trying to understand how the helper methods work. For instance .new & .save . For instance, I''ve created a table of Objects, and generated a scaffold. I see that in the controller, there are calls to Object.new and Object.save. I''m assuming that these are methods inherited

created_on & updated_on - helper to display date only
All, My initial list is rather busy. I would like to shorten the created_on and updated_on fields to just display the date, not the time. Best wold be a simple 12/28/05 type of presentation. I''ve found the format helpers in rdoc. (ie. distance_of_time_in_words_to_now ), but none seem to be what I''m looking for. How do I control the date format of a timestamp field? Thanks

Converting time retrieved from MySQL
I''m having a problem converting a date retrieved from my MySQL database and I''m hoping someone can help. MySQL stores the date/time as this: 2005-03-08 17:00:34.0 and according to my Pickaxe book Ruby stores times as "the number of seconds and microseconds since [...] January 1, 1970". All well and good. Unfortunately, RoR is converting my date to this:

migrations :timestamp becomes :datetime in mySql
For some reason whenever I try and create a timestamp column with migrations and mysql I get a datetime column instead. That''s kind of annoying because I want the column to update every time the row gets changed. Is this a bug, or is there something I can do about it? (Obviously I can manually change my mysql table, but that kind of defeats the point of migrations!) In my migration

After reading into the many articles on Ruby/ROR, have to admit looks pretty good so far. Really serious about getting into this and possibly developing some good Web 2.0 applications. Just wondering the best way to learn Ruby on

Pref for beginner book: Wrox (Holzner) or Ruby for Rails?
I''m a beginner. I''ve done the apple tutorial, Agile ROR (the depot app, I stopped after that, a little to advanced with no base knowledge of Ruby), Why''s guide and my copy of Chris Pine''s book today. After Pine, I''m going to buy either the Wrox book or Ruby for Rails book. I did a search and there''s not too much on the Wrox book (Holzner)

Don''t understand :: in ActionController::Base
Maybe this should apply to Ruby forums directly, but I''ll try here. I understand the concept of classes and subclasses thanks to the excellent "Programming Ruby - The Pragmatic Programmer''s Guide". However, I don''t understand what :: signify in terms of inheritance, parent and child in e.g. ActionController::Base -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

"Rails recipes" vs "Rails cookbook"
Reviews Wanted. I''ve read the tables of contents and haven''t yet made up my mind. Is one book clearly better than the other? Is one clearly full of bugs? Is one so much further ahead that there is no choice? Are they both so incomplete that I should just wait and only cook real food? Do trains still have dining cars?
