Bug with serialized columns in console ?
Hi,
I recently added 2 serialized columns in my class Server :
class Server < ActiveRecord::Base
serialize :visa, Hash
serialize :appli, Array
...
No problem in my controller and my application and everything works as
expected : Excel exports following the "visa" Hash or "appli" Array
are ok.
But since I added the visa Hash, I can''t load the record with

Problems with ActiveRecord, Oracle adapter, find_by_sql, multi-table join - ORA-04043 error
Hi all,
Windows XP
Oracle 10g client
OCI8 0.1.16
Ruby 1.8.5
Rails 1.1.6
I''m hitting weird behavior with the Oracle adapter and a find_by_sql
call on a multi-table join.
The SQL looks like this:
SELECT DISTINCT e1.ip_address, loc.street, loc.city, loc.state
FROM schema.net_element ne, schema.equipment e1, schema.equipment e2,
schema.building b, schema.cust_loc cl, schema.location

Does text_field go directly to attributes hash in AR object?
All,
I''m having a hell of a time figuring out what is going on here.
I''m trying to override one of my getters so that I can format it a
certain way in my form. But I can''t seem to get text_field to call the
appropriate method on my object.
So here''s my getter:

ActiveRecord override
Would really appreciate it if someone could tell me why this is happening:
I override ssn method of AR class so I can encrypt/decrypt to/from the db:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
def ssn=(value)
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn, Crypto.encrypt(self.encryption_key,
value))
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn_final_four, value[5,4])

Override automatic accessor for reference field in model
When a column in a database table is actual data, rather than an fkey to
another table, I can override the automatic accessor by just doing the
following:
def field_name
# do something here
read_attribute(field_name)
end
This does not seem to work for me if the field is an fkey, say user_id,
linking to another table. I''ve made this work by aliasing the accessor
like this:

Can''t set then read id on AR class in 0.8.5
I''m learning rails and have a test application which parses parts an
XML file to create AR objects and puts them in a database. The IDs in
the database are taken from the XML, i.e. I explicitly set them using
#id. The XML structure is mapped to AR relationships using has_many,
belongs_to etc. I''m using a SAX parser, creating objects when the
element start tag occurs and saving

Reading Model data before update
Hi all,
here is the challenge:
I have this validation method, that basically prevents an object which
billed = true to be updated:
def before_update
if read_attribute(:billed)
errors.add_to_base(''This service has already been billed for'')
end
!read_attribute(:billed)
end
The above code does not work in case I do something like:

odd habtm behavior? or is it me?
Hello List,
I''m a bit spent on this problem, and my code might be whack. I seem to be
encountering a problem where the primary key on a join table is not being
resolved correctly. I will elaborate after some code bits. I am creating
the join table using migrations, and relevant model code is this:
class Post < ActiveRecord::Base

Guys,
Say I have the following:

Then I have the following code:

john = Person.new
john.house.color = "Blue"
john.save

What I would like to have happen, is that on first call to john.house, if
house hadn''t been

Issue in ActiveRecord generated reader methods
Hi all!
I have come into a strange issue in Rails that I am hoping someone
can shed some light.
To make a very long story short, I have been researching how to
override ActiveRecord::Base#read_attribute and write_attribute to
perform security checks at the model level (influenced by the
ModelSecurity generator). Shortly after implementing some code to
check this behavior, I began to

Best way to format attributes during visualization/editing
Hi to everyone,
My name''s Carmine and I''m a rails newbie. So, here''s my newbie question
:)
I have a model with one attribute named "kind" of type integer.
This attribute can assume values within the range [0..5].
Each value has a "verbose" representation e.g.: 0 => grain, 1 => liquid
...
To visualize the verbose representation I''ve

Inheriting data from one model to another
Hello
I''ve been struggling with something for hours that I thought would be
a simple job. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on what I''m
trying to do :o)
First of all I''ll explain what I''m trying to achieve. In a store
application I want to have products and product variations. A product
variation should inherit all of its properties from product unless

Rewriting attribute accessors?
I''m new to Rails and so was wondering if the following strategy is a
good idea.
Background: I''m writing a eCommerce application which has a Product
model and an Option model, they are setup with a has_and_belongs_to_many
relationship. The Product model features the ''base'' attributes of the
product and then the shopkeeper *can* add one or more Options that

ActiveRecord: Legacy primary keys

I''m building a frontend for a legacy schema, with tables like this:

PRIMARY KEY (`a_type_cd`)

to be updateable. I create the following a base class to

Form helpers don''t work with facade columns?
Hello all,
I''ve been trying to use a facade column but I notice that the form
helpers don''t seem to respect the facade.
In the following example I''m trying to story the prices as Integer
values but present them to the user as decimals.

def price=(new_price)
write_attribute(:price, Float(new_price)*100)
end
