Inheriting data from one model to another
Hello
I''ve been struggling with something for hours that I thought would be
a simple job. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on what I''m
trying to do :o)
First of all I''ll explain what I''m trying to achieve. In a store
application I want to have products and product variations. A product
variation should inherit all of its properties from product unless

Rails functional testing and Mocha
I''ve always wanted to be able to do stuff like this in my functional
tests
c = customers(:customer_1)
c.expects(:great_customer_service)
post :service_customer, :id => c.id
This of course fails because inside the rails action a different
instance of customer is used. Some of the time setting your
expectation/stubbing on Customer.any_instance works, but it''s not

On my current project I needed to create a stub that responded
correctly to the id message. Here''s the change I put into my copy of
head.

How do you define a method
Hi all,
I was wondering if anybody could help me figure why a view cannot find a
method that I defined in another class. I do this in the view: (let''s
say index.rhtml)
<%= check_box("item_search_page", "method_name")
Here, item_search_page is a variable in the view''s controller, which
creates a new ItemSearchPage object. And I defined

Cropped graph using lattice
I'm fitting data from a mixture experiment, and I'd like to present the results in a ternary graph with contours. I found this code by Walmes Zeviani
http://n4.nabble.com/Triangular-filled-contour-plot-td1557386.html
which is just what I want--except I would like the axis titles and labels to be proportionately larger than the ternary graph itself, for legibility in publication. When I

problem with using any_instance
Hey all,
I have a question with using mocha in my tests.
In the same test file, I have two tests,
<code>
def test_a
klass.any_instance.stubs(:method_name).returns("something")
klass.new.method_name
...
end
def test_b
...
klass.new.method_name
...
end
</code>
where klass is some class
when the tests run, test _a passes, but test_b had an error like this:

Mocking Time, delegating to original object
In my Unit tests, I run into the all-too-common problem of
Time.expects(:now) being called by Benchmark before the method is
unmocked.
Instead of messing around with the teardown order, I decided to modify
the Expectation with a new method, .stops_mocking.
Here are the changes I use, including a few monkey patches to push
relevant objects down to where I want them, all wrapped up in a big
ugly

use 'lapply' to creat 2 new columns based on old ones in a data frame
There is a dataset 'm', which has 3 columns: 'index', 'old1' and 'old2';
I want to create 2 new columns: 'new1' and 'new2' on this condition:
if 'index'==i, then 'new1'='old1'+add[i].
'add' is a vector of numbers to be added to old columns, e.g. add=c(10,20,30
...)
Like this:
index old1 old2 new1

help with method_missing in ActiveRecord
I am serializing a data object (FooData) into an ActiveRecord column (Foo).
I''d like to be able to do delegate methods to the data class if the Foo
class doesn''t have that attribute. So instead of:
f = Foo.new
f.data.item1
I''d like to do:
f = Foo.new
f.item1
I was hoping that I could add a method_missing method to my Foo class and
call methods in the FooData class

replace multiple string
Hi
I would like to use a bash script that searches files and
subdirectories name in a directory /var/ww/html/web
for a specific string, and when it finds the search string, replaces
the string (old1) with new string (new1), and so on
old2 with new2 ....oldn with newn.

do
sed -e "s/old1/new1/" \

Scaffold for AWS (webservice)?
Hi,
Have I missed there being any (extra) scaffold capability in
ActionWebService (AWS)? I know about web_service_scaffold placed within
a Controller class, which generates WS functionality based on the Api.
But might there somewhere be a means to get AWS generation of Api and
Controller code that automatically exposes all an ActiveRecord model
class''s CRUD member operations as

nlminb--lower bound for parameters are dependent on each others
Hello
I'm trying to solve two sets of equations (each set has four equations and
all of them share common parameters) with nlminb procedure. I
minimize one set and use their parameters as initial values of other set,
repeating this until their parameters become very close to each other.
I have several parameters (say,param1, param2) and their constraints are
given as inequality and depend

Creating Methods in the Model?
Hey Everyone.
First day diving in to ROR and Ruby...
My question is how do you define methods with in the model class and/or
should I even be doing this?
It is my understanding that you should put as much of the business logic
into the model as possible. I want to do some data manipulation before
I things are submitted to the database
IE (Create a variable out of two submitted via form, as

sorting a data frame by rownames
Hi there,
I'm sure there's an easy answer to this, and I can't wait to see it.
The question: is there an easy way to sort a data frame by it's row names?
My dilemma:
I've had to pull apart a data frame, run it through a loop to do some
calculations and generate new variables, and then re-construct the chunks
back into a data frame at the end.
Doing this preserves the row

lmer() and "$ operator is invalid for atomic vectors"
Hi all,
I am a bit mystified by this error message that I get when I try to apply
lmer() to a simple dataset with one between factor (age) and one within
factor (item): "$ operator is invalid for atomic vectors"
I'll just provide the code, because I don't see where the problem is:
library(lme4)
options(contrasts=c("contr.helmert","contr.poly"))
