acts_as_rateable in Beast
I''m trying to implement acts_as_rateable to my Beast installation to
give users the option to rate posts (like reddit). I chose
acts_as_rateable as it supposedly easily allows reddit-type voting but
I''m having some problems setting it up and the documentation seems
outdated.

Using link_to_remote to add a record
I am trying to use link_to_remote to simply add a record to a database
table called "ratings". I''ve seen some examples of this being done but
can''t seem to get it to work. Any ideas about what I''m doing wrong?
Here is what I have in my view:

VALIDATION QUESTION

in this case furnii where I have all my calls. The problem is that, the
form containing the field I''m trying to validate resides in the furnii
views. I tried to add validates_presence_of :content (the field name) in
both the furnii model and the ratecomment model but it does not work. I
know there

is there a way to not repeat installing plugins?
i seem to be using the same plugins for all my sites and was wondering
if there is a way to make the process easier and faster?
is this what is called by "packing your own gems"?

file_column do download from URL
Is there a simple way of forcing file_column to download file from given
(ex. in form) url instead of uploading it manualy?
I know:
http://blog.caboo.se/articles/2006/01/09/file_column-magick-and-versions
require ''open-uri''
Attachment.find_first.filename = open(url)
if not working as expected... what is interesting is that:

mixin behavior
Hi, all,
I need to DRY up some code in a few models. My first inclination,
having come from the Java world, was to go with an abstract class.
After a bit of reading, I then decided to follow the mixin route
instead. Now I''m running into trouble, most likely from a few basic
misunderstandings.
There are three models I will be using to average and count rating
data by executing a

Newbie : What is the number Rails adds in images URL, etc?
If I write :
<%= image_tag "rails.png" %>
I get in HTML :
<img alt="Rails" src="/images/rails.png?1158095722" />
What is the number at the end of the src tag ? What is it for ?
Thanks :).
Nicolas.

FileColumn - Validate Before Saving
file_column is great -- but I need a way to run through the validations
(ie: validates_file_format_of) before saving. That is, when a user first
uploads an image it is displayed in the view but not ''saved'' until they
click the ''Save'' button on the form. I want to display an error
message/disable the ''Save'' button if the file they just

RoR Logs viewer?
Ok another newbie question.
I did a tail -f on the test.log file for the sample depot application
in Agile Web Development book and was very impressed with the formatted
log entries. Apparently, a lot of effort has been put into this. My
question is: what is the most effective way of viewing this log? tail
command? I ask this question because a bare bones text editor like
gedit or vi will not

Looking at the page, it appears that about 4300 folks have
been subscribed. However, I saw nothing about this on
